I’ll be a subset volunteer of course. And I won’t choose Slenderman. Wow, that was pretty awful.

I didn't even realize it was in theaters. Just vaguely remember it was shopped around to several studios, and the backlash about it being based on a real-life tragedy.

Anyway, that leaves us with 12 subset seats remaining.

The Purge: Season 1 (HD) is $3.99 at Amazon. Obviously a misprice so jump on it quick.

Didn't realize there's a series of the Purge. Can anyone comment on this series?

EDIT: I don't really watch too much television nowdays, and it seems this one hasn't even aired.

Amazon has been running occasional ‘too good to be true’ tier deals on tv shows before they premiere.

I think The Purge has potential as a tv show but always found the premise to be a little too thin of a device to justify what ends up working well in theaters as a brain dead popcorn thriller clawing at the low hanging fruit of race and economic anxieties. Not sure how well that would translate to episodic content; since is suppose to be an annual event. I wish some more supernatural horror franchises would make a jump to tv and am curious to see what kind of reception Purge tv gets (seems like Annabelle/Conjuring could make interesting tv).

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

While I'm making preparations for that other thread, if anyone wants to...

  • vote (theme voting ends 8/23 11:59 PM EST)

  • give checklist suggestions

  • share theme placement ideas

  • volunteer for a subset (11 spots remaining)

  • share ideas for possible theme combos

  • give criterion/comedy subset crossover suggestions

  • or just whatever

Please do.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Criterion subset crossover suggestion: Cat People (1942)

Checklist suggestions:
  • Based on an Ed and Lorraine Warren "investigation" (e.g. The Conjuring, The Amityville Horror, Annabelle, The Haunted, The Haunting in Connecticut)
  • Features filming of a paranormal / other TV show (e.g. Grave Encounters, They're Watching)
  • Features a personal phobia (e.g. I had recurring nightmares of my Charlie McCarthy ventiloquist doll trying to murder me with a butcher knife through most of my childhood, so I'd be watching something like Magic or Dead Silence...)
  • Film you once disliked but now enjoy (or want to give a second chance)
  • Features the line of dialogue (or title): "It's alive!" (e.g. Frankenstein, Rosemary’s Baby, It's Alive!)
  • Takes place on a plane, train or automobile
  • Killer Clowns
  • SFX by KNB FX/Greg Nicotero
  • Starring/Directed/Written by Siblings (Farmigas, Tillys, Soskas, Pangs, Duffers)
  • Nation of origin: Canada

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 14: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Criterion subset crossover suggestion: Pan's Labyrinth.

Had a hot date night in 2006, with the movie choices being either Pan's Labyrinth or Children of Men. Ended up seeing COM. Near the end of the movie, she ended up puking all over my leg, and the seats in front of her. The theater was pretty full and there was a couple who sat in those very chairs, but they moved before the movie started. Lucky them!

Seconding Cat People; surprised that one hasn't been used before for CC.

Also voting for Dave Made a Maze; that's one strange witty film. [Assuming this is available streaming somewhere]

10/26 is National Frankenstein Friday (last Friday of October). So perhaps for the Frankenstein / Mad Doctors theme?

Also, 10/23 is TV Talk Show Host Day (Johnny Carson's b-day). Horrorspondents?

And I can't think of a theme, but 10/25 is Chucky, the Notorious Killer Doll Day!

Checklist Suggestion:
Movies where they say the title of the movie in the film.

I guess that one is kind of easy but it would be fun to see people list stuff that isn’t overly obvious (like Frankenstein or Dracula where the names are mentioned over and over). Something like Scream (Matthew Lillard: “It’s a SCREAM, baby”.

I like these. :-) Ed and Lorraine Warren are fascinating. I've read a few of their books too. There was one about a guy who was just taking out his trash in Brooklyn or someplace like that and he got possessed by the spirit of a wolf and started going into these fugues where he'd act just like a wolf. Bizarre.
