"A bit bloated" is being kind. ;) And yeah, I have the extended editions, but have only watched one so far, whereas I swear by the LOTR EEs.

I have both editions of The Hobbit and have only watched the extended. I didn't bother to see that trilogy in the theater (various reasons including it being a trilogy, the frame rate, incorporating material not in any of the books, and more). I liked them but they are absolutely too long and I feel two films would have told the story quite well. In all fairness, they did incorporate stuff from "The Return of the King" appendixes into those 3 films which accounts for *some* of the length. I still can't decide if that was good or not but it's likely the only way any of that material would have ever made it into a movie.

I really need to watch the theatrical versions of The Hobbit to see if it plays better. I also haven't upgraded it to BR simply because of the way it looks on DVD - and that's due to the frame rate.

Re: 11th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I have really changed the way I approach this challenge. Last year I decided to try to watch a number of series over the next few years. I am currently watching the Marvel Movies, Resident Evil, Star Wars, Original Star Trek, New Star Trek, Romero's Dead Movies, Harry Potter, Terminator, the Purge Films and the Alien Films. I am also watching a number of 2 part Films. I mention this because next year I thnk I will add the Tolkien Films. If anybody can think of any other multi-film series that they enjoyed please suggest them to me. I am finding that I am really enjoying going back and rewatching these movies.

Planet of the Apes - Original and new series
Matrix
Men in Black
Predator
Superman - Christopher Reeves series
Batman - Tim Burton films
Riddick series
The Terminator
Dune - The two SciFi channel mini series (Dune and Children of Dune)
Back to the Future
Gamera
Godzilla
Mad Max
Indiana Jones
Tremors
Starship Troopers
Quatermass
Flash Gordon - serials
Harryhausen Sinbad films

I really want to include Blade Runner as I love the original - but I've yet to see the new film. It's on tap for this year's challenge. :)

Thanks for the reminder that I have Blade Runner sitting in my Vudu queue! I should also try to fit in the new Alien.

Glad orlmac is including the Purge films. It was only a couple challenges ago that I checked them and saw they fit under the category of "social science fiction," or how people react when placed in certain situations. I think I've seen the second and third within the last year but not the first.

Critters 1 - 4
Trancers 1 - 6
Conan the Barbarian (1982)/Conan the Destroyer (1984)

Thought of a few more:

Thanks for the suggestions so far. They are all good, and a couple I was working on last year and forgot to continue this year! I do have Blade Runners on tap but I sure hope the newest one is worth the time to watch. I will copy the suggestions to my beginning list for next year. I could easily add another 10 to next year and really make it easy for me to make my choices for the year. If anyone else has suggestions please list them so I can add them to my beginning thoughts for next year (or even thoughts on Horror ones so I can get my mind starting that way for this year).

I never saw those high frame rate theatrical showings. I was so excited about the first Hobbit that I saw it in IMAX 3-D (the true IMAX screen at our local science center). It looked good, but it wasn't worth the cost and effort so I saw the other two on standard screens.

I do appreciate the extra books being incorporated, because you're right, it'd be doubtful that they'd show up on their own. My biggest gripe is that they set up Smaug as a cliff hanger and then in the next film, he's in it for like 2 minutes and it's off to something else entirely. I think it was a big waste of a well done dragon! But I think most people would agree that there are 3 films mainly because they knew people would go and watch them and that meant more money...they were trying to recreate LOTRs and that phenomenon but forget there was a reason everyone enjoyed LOTR-it was well done and thought out!

All this talk is making me think of doing some sort of marathon with the Hobbit and LOTRs this month myself!

I never understood why they'd even use Smaug as a cliff hanger as he's barely in the book. I do like a good dragon but they failed there.

I'm with you on the Hobbit done as three films mainly for box office. I've read the studio asked for a bridging film between the Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy so they just made the Hobbit three films instead by including the bridging material. I think I'd have rather had a two film Hobbit series with that story told properly and just make a bridging film. People would have gone to see it.

I should do that myself. Partly to watch the theatrical Hobbit films and partly to finally watch my LOTR extended trilogy BR set (I also have the theatrical LOTR trilogy on BR and DVD but haven't watched that version since I saw it in the theater).

I recall the DVDs looking somewhat like a video taped TV show. They just don't have that "film look" I expect from a movie. It's really difficult to quantify. They just look "off" somehow. Because I see the difference on DVD I fully expect it to be more noticeable on BR. Since I've not watched my theatrical DVDs yet I'll try to get them in and re-evaluate the way they look.

A couple of years ago I watched the available Universal Horror films, from 1913s Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde through 1960s The Leech Woman, in chronological order. It was quite fun. Here's the Wikipedia link with a full list. I have a document, and have posted it several times in the Horror Challenge discussion threads, that lists the films and includes information on DVD releases. The majority are available, or at least were. A few have gone OOP over the years but you can find the majority on disc or online.

Here's that list:
Spoiler:

These are in theatrical release order with parenthetical information about DVD releases. The release information is generally what I've purchased and simply serves as a jumping off point if you're looking to pick up any of these. Some I purchased in collections are also available as single titles. Several are now OOP and hard to find.

The Abbott & Costello films are now included in the new Universal Monsters Legacy Collection releases as well as a stand-alone release with *just* those films.

The *new* Universal Monsters Legacy Collection releases are preferred over the original releases as the main feature in each is from the master created for the BR releases of those films. With the Invisible Man and Creature from the Black Lagoon series coming to BR soon, those are the new preferable versions.

Along with the complete series of Xena: Warrior Princess, now I have the first season of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. I found Season One on Google Play, so I decided, why not? That's just a couple things I plan to watch, as I have a lot of sci fi and fantasy shows and movies.

Same here - but I do have 3 or 4 (not exactly sure) seasons of Xena on the unwatched shelf. After getting the full run of Hercules, I'd started purchasing the Anchor Bay Xena releases but they suddenly went OOP right after I purchased S1. So I was thrilled when Universal began re-releases of both series (smaller, better packaging!). I started with Xena since I didn't have all the seasons in the AB release.

I really need to watch it as I somewhat gave up on it during the original airings... When it started to get "odd" and, IMHO, went off-the-rails a bit around S4. I only half-way watched S6 and thought the finale was pretty bad. I'm curious to see if I'll feel the same after seeing those seasons again after ~23 years (Wow! That's really odd to type for what I still consider to be a "new" series!)

Does the Google Play S1 include the 5 made-for-tv movie "specials" which introduced the character and truly started the series? You really need to see those as they set up and explain some stuff.

Unversal chose not to include those on their Hercules re-release and, to date, hasn't done a separate release of those. Of course they've also not bothered to re-release S6 and complete the re-release. That's the main thing that's holding me back from re-purchasing the series. I really want that smaller, keep case with pages, packaging. The mega-expanding digipak AB used is horrible to deal with and takes up far too much space on the shelf. I can easily pull those TV Movies out of the AB package but Universal needs to re-release S6.

And I no sooner type that and look it up again to discover that !

^ I watched those movies when they were on TV as part of the Action Pack, but no they are not on the Google Play release either. A shame, as I rather enjoyed them, and thought that Anthony Quinn did a very good Zeus. I remember how excited I was when I heard that Zeus was going to be in the next episode of Hercules, only to be disappointed that someone else played him.

That movie's a hoot! It has some very cheesy visuals but an interesting premise.
