Challenge month or not I usually average 30-50 movies and up to 100 TV episodes.
Sounding like people are pretty caught up on their lists, so tonight around midnight I'll be drawing names. Just to remind people, the first come, first serve, so please give me a list of which prizes you'd like in order in case someone else gets there first. Also, there will be a time limit to claim the prize. I'm thinking 3 days (72 hours) from when I contacted you. Once that time limit is up, I will move to the next person. Finally, our sponsor has requested that the prize winners have a US address. Thank you all for a great challenge and to GoldenWheels for sponsoring us! |
Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
I had a blast during the challenge! I got to 58 items and was able to get some things out of my unwatched pile. I'm now gleaning everyone's lists for ideas of things to check out!

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Big thanks to Lisa and Rich!
I'm all over the place on viewing habits, although 99% of what I watch (outside of news) is Challenge compliant. I might watch 5 things a couple months in a row, but then 450 hours in October. Although I have watched more the last year due to being laid up a bit. And now I have a monthly checklist making sure I hit each collection and subscription, so I should always get at least 14 viewings a month now. |
Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
My list is finalized.
Unfortunately due to a busy month and making preparations for that other challenge, I hit an all-time low (or close to it), and my unwatched pile is currently the size of a mountain. Still, I had a blast in what's one of my favorite challenges with very few clunkers, and got to end on a high note with Jodorowsky's Dune. Thanks for hosting, LJG. |

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Congrats to the winners, and thanks for running the challenge, LJG, and for the prizes, Hamilton Books!
I love sci-fi and am pretty sure it's my biggest backlog, but my schedule was terrible this month and I'm sure this was my worst showing in a long time. I still watched some good stuff, though! |
Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
And we have our first response from TheBigDave! He chose prize pack #1 which has Wrath of the Sword, The Lost World: Double Feature and Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume 1. Congrats again!

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Though I wasn't very talkative this time around I had a great time with this challenge. I finished my journey through the entire Trek universe for the 50th anniversary. Thanks LJG765 for hosting this challenge and congrats to the winners.

Cool! I won something! :)
I claim: Five: 1. Brain That Wouldn't Die BLU 2. 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo (PM sent LJG) Give me dibs on the Species movies :) Thanks  I'll send a pm shortly. If I didn't already own most of the Gamera movies, that would've been a sweet pick. Even though the old movies have (mostly well-earned) reputations for being craptastic, the more recent movies (which the pack has on Blu) are actually pretty good. |
Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Thank you to LJG765 and Golden Wheels! I already msg'd them, but I'm in for the Gamera set. I had fun, although I didn't get to all the movies I had scheduled. Thanks again!

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
And we are down to one person needing to claim (ntnon!)
Congrats to BobO'Link who claimed prize pack 5, Brain that Wouldn't Die BLU and 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo; brainee who claimed prize pack 3 that has Species II BLU and Species III/Species Awakening BLU; and finally Gobear who chose prize pack 4, Gamera Trilogy, Gamera: Legacy Collection, Gamera: War of the Monsters Collection, MST3K Vs Gamera: Mystery Science Theater, Vol. XXI. That leaves prize pack 2, Sci-Fi Movie Freak, Science Fiction: The Fantastic Chronicle of Movie Posters, Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume II. |
Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Thanks again LJG765 and also Goldenwheels!
My grandkids will be thrilled with the Scooby Doo set and I know I'll enjoy the Brain that Wouldn't Die as it's a old favorite. :) I'll lead off the Horror challenge with that one. Hey! It just hit me that the Scooby Doo set is animation! I'll make 'em watch it *this* month! :D |

I have a soft spot for Brain that Wouldn't Die (and not just the MST3K version). Although I'm sure it seems silly now, when I first saw it as a kid I found it rather shocking. Being in the public domain (for copyrights) it showed up regularly in the 70s when you had local horror hosts on Saturday afternoon tv (which I loved). As you can imagine, most old horror movies are pretty tame stuff (even to a kid in the 70s). But Brain was jarringly graphic at times (especially considering it was an American movie made in 50's). The one scene that burned its way onto my brain was ... Spoiler:
The other innocent seeming old B&W sci-fi/horror that traumatized me was The Flesh Eaters. With the most disturbing scene (for me) being .... Spoiler:

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
I own a copy of Brain That Wouldn't Die as well. It's part of a 4 movie set. Great choice Bob. Might watch mine this October too.

It was my favorite Scooby series as a kid...probably because of Vincent Price. I was always confused why they never finished the series though...they never had a wrap up episode. As a kid, I always though it was because I just caught them randomly on TV and just missed it... |

The "AMC Monsterfest Collection" - HORRIBLE prints. The Synapse release - Very good quality and complete. Movies 4 You - More Sci-Fi Classics (MGM Films) - Good print but I purchased this for The Amazing Transparent Man and The Neanderthal Man as I already had good prints of the other two. It's currently $3.93 w/free Prime shipping - a excellent price and value! And when it came in I discovered some nice bonus stuff on "Brain" (a topless model shot that was removed for US distribution - I don't recall it being on the Synapse release - I may check when I get home) And soon, the new Blu-ray with the MST3K episode, the deleted scene, and more! :) It'll be interesting to see what, if any, differences there are in PQ on the blu-ray release.

I have to admit, I've never watched Brain that Wouldn't Die. With all the recommendations, I may have to scare up a copy come October!

No "wrap up" eh? Well... it'll fit right in with all the other SF/Fantasy series I own that ended on cliff-hangers or have no resolution. :) |

I thought it was silly it was being released on blu-ray and I never thought to check for features. It's on my buy list now :)
Special Features Include: -High Definition (1080p) transfer from the negative – restored to its uncut version (1.66:1) -Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode – “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” (in Standard Definition) -Audio Commentary with film historian and author Steve Haberman and writer Tony Sasso -Alternate Scene from the International Cut -Theatrical Trailer -Still Gallery Most of that is on the various DVD releases, some on that Timeless 4 pack release. New to the blu-ray is the MST3K episode and possibly the commentary (not yet checked my various DVD releases). |
