I've heard him play small roles on their radio show, but I've never been subjected to an Abbott & Besser show. When was that, and for how many episodes? Dunning's Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio doesn't say anything about it in the A&C show entry (but it's obviously not a complete source for any radio show).

Now that you say that, I think I've read that somewhere before.

That "whiny, bratty" schtick of his is what turns me off...

I understand why the Stooges used him as it was basically no choice if they wanted to keep working. But A&C must have liked his act as he was part of their entorage for several years. Even so, I don't recall him being in any of their films. If he was, it wasn't doing his "regular" stuff but a normal role.

According to IMDb he was in a few A&C films.

EDIT: Well, make that two; the one already mentioned and Abbott and Costello Meet the Keystone Kops.

That would've been terrific.

Yep... but I'm not at all interested in the BR set extras as I already have several different Hot Wheels Batmobile miniatures and the Adam West "book" doesn't interest me. I *have* been looking at the extras for the DVD set from that site. They look cool but most of it is like the stuff in the BR set from Amazon - I'll look at it once and file it away. I have enough of that kind of stuff and really don't want/need any more. I mainly don't know if it's worth $15 (based on my pre-order price) for "Adam West: Naked" - I already have the movie. I also think that set, "Naked" and the movie, will be made available separately at some time in the near future for ~$25 or less.

I am finally watching my first *movie* of the challenge! It's 1941's Topper Returns. I already have this one in a very good quality set along with Topper. They are a couple of favorites from that era. The one I'm watching tonight is on a 8 film set from Platinum Disc Corp. and I'm watching it mainly because it's a new purchase. Suprisingly, the print used is very good - possibly the same one used on the Artisan release from 2003. I got the set for On Approval (1927) and hope to get to it over the weekend. There are a couple of Harold Lloyd features on the disc with Topper Returns as well as a Wheeler and Woolsey feature. I'll get to them later tonight or tomorrow.

My first movie of the challenge was Ghostbusters, caught earlier on AMC. Didn't watch Ghostbusters II though.

Re: The Fourth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2014

So, I've got three more movies down.

--------------

I first watched The Artist, which shouldn't have been my cup of tea, but damn if it wasn't admirable. I get what this movie is trying to do. It's trying to be an homage to the older days of silent film; to artfully and universally depict the general growth of art from one style to another. In this case, the growth of silent film to "talkies".

Spoiler:
I will get the primary problem with the film out of the way: it can be quite melodramatic at times. I get that we're calling back to the old days of silent film, but there's a reason the medium was grown out of. Because a problem is inherent of a medium does not make it *ok* in that medium. It is not just melodramatic, it is melodramatic in a very silly way. The multiple instances in which Valentin inflicts suffering on himself starts to pile up in contriving ways. His wife is a plot device made to make his life a larger pile of despair. The climax of the movie in particular makes me groan.

Another thing I might mention is that while the character are thematically crafted, they lack a little bit of human touch. They come off more like symbols than really people at times.

But damn if that symbolism isn't striking! This is a film that is filled to the brim with creativity. Every motif in the film, right down to the title, adds both depth and universality to the themes of the movie. The movie's being silent gives us Valentin's perspective: his work is his life, and life is his work. He's so attached to his work that he sees the world as one big silent movie around him. The title further expresses his status as an artist: those who are truly attached to their work won't be able to grow with the needs of the public. A true artist will not give in to the public's demands. It is not until the end of the movie that he's able to accept "talkies" as a viable art form that we finally hear everyone's voice.

This movie is not a mere homage to a dead medium, it is a parable about how new cultures replace old cultures, and how crucial it can be not to be left behind. If only the character relationships were a bit more refined.

3.5/5

--------------

Second movie I watched was About Time, which had the promise to be a... somewhat entertaining RomCom involving a bit of time travel.

Jesus Christ, were these people drunk when they made it?

Spoiler:
The movie constantly stumbles on what it wants to be and contradicts its eventual themes. Our main character, Tim learns he has the power to go back in time to events he remembers. When he asks about the butterfly effect, his dad replies by saying "well, civilization hasn't fallen yet, so I guess it doesn't apply," dodging the question entirely. Once our plot gimmick has been set-up while ignoring logic altogether, Tim uses this power to secure his own love life. Man, great ambitions, there. If I could change things about my past, I highly doubt I'd just try to secure my love life.

He moves to France and his Harvest Moon life finally begins. He has to find love before the first part of the game ends. But that's not a problem, since he can reset the game as much as he wants, so we feel no tension if anything goes wrong in his relationships. He can just, y'know, reverse the awkwardness. He then meets an "introvert" named Mary, of whom he ends up getting the phone number. Later, he learns his friend's play was a total disaster because an actor forgot key lines. Being the nice main character he is, Tim goes back and time and makes the play work. But in doing so, he finds that he'd never been able to meet Mary.

But, no worries! He eventually finds her at a museum, and introduces himself in the most uncomfortably awkward way possible. Before he can get to know her better, he finds out she'd met the boy of her dreams the previous week, a little after Tim and her should had met. He then goes back in time and stops her from meeting this boy, just so that he himself can take the prize. But, since he's the main character, it's okay if he manipulates her life like that.

Well, okay, we had to get the two lovers to meet eventually, right? If that's what it took to do so, let bygones be bygones. Now we're going to develop their relationship and the characters, right?

Nope. By the end of the movie, Mary is nothing more than Tim's "mate". We never see what's introverted, or misanthropic, or shy, or sweet, or anything about her. Life just moves on. Because this is supposed to be a movie about life, and how cool it is, and how it happens in the blink of an eye! Too fast of a blink to give the script any space to develop the characters past the typical family archetype, at that. They then get married and have kids. Tim's sister has a short arc involving her faulty relationship, which is about the fact that you don't need time travel to become happier. His dad is diagnosed with cancer, which ends up telling him that Tim needs to live the most boring, monotonous, repetitive life possible to truly enjoy it. Tim then concludes by saying he doesn't need time travel to enjoy his life.

I mean, because he's already happy, that is. You know, because he used time travel to make his life what it was to begin with.

This is an extremely melodramatic, sappy, overly sentimental, indecisive movie. If you're going to tell us that Tim doesn't need time travel to live a happy life, make sure he doesn't use it manipulatively to get to this point in life to begin with. Not only is that contradictory to your eventual theme, it completely kills the theme to begin with. And if you want to be sentimental and distinctly human, make sure your characters are distinctly human. Please. I had a hard time taking any of this seriously.

1.5/5

--------------

Finally, I watched The 33D Invader.

...

Nope.

Spoiler:
There is nothing funny about a group of perverts and 99% of the rest of the male population, also being perverts, fawn over the completely unobtainable girls, who lead them on and then kick the shit out of them. Oh, and there's the main character, who happens to be one of the few dudes in the whole world that isn't a pervert! Praise him, the almighty "likable" main character with a harem! Add in a few shitty dick jokes, and a lot of tasteless humor, and you have a formula for a really smelly movie. Not to mention, the long, overdone sex scenes that make you think "God, is she going to say 'uguu' already or not?!" I was going to compare the absurdity of this movie to hentai before I realized that this was basically porn.

Why do people make this stuff?

Re: The Fourth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2014

We saw Big Hero 6 today, and... it's OK. It's perhaps not unsurprising that a Disney/Marvel film that is both those things and neither of those things and is based on a comic series that was barely read (and barely liked) is not quite sure what it wants to be as a film and doesn't quite succeed.

Spoilered for new-ness, and double- (or triple)-spoilered for actual spoilers.
Spoiler:
The characterisation of the main characters is both all over the place and completely undeveloped for three-quarters of the characters. Basically, only Hiro and his brother (and to some extent Baymax) get any sort of character development or actual shading. The other four of the "six" are just there. Interestingly (and reportedly this is because the originals were Japanese, and despite changing ethnicity/nationalities, Disney/Marvel didn't want to actually change the names..!) barely any of the characters have real names... so it's perhaps no surprise they really have thin/non-existent personalities, too.

There are real problems with tone, with plot, with heroism/villainy and with pretty-much everything else, too.

The first part/"third" of the film has nothing really to do with the rest of it. It's surely just to set up two things
Spoiler:
a) mild character for Hiro's brother, to add to later sympathy/empathy for Hiro, and b) an attempt to make Hiro seem mildly rebellious
... and neither of those are really necessary. We don't need the first, and the second still doesn't make much sense: Hiro's a young, semi-pre-pubescent teenager, so the mood changes and youthfulness explain everything necessary for the plot.

Hiding the motivation of the villain along with his/her identity is hardly a problem, but the attempts to de-fang all villains by giving them "reasonable" motivations takes something away from the heroism of their opponents/the heroes. Here,
Spoiler:
the villain's motivation is also a problem
Spoiler:
as it is mistaken.
More to the point, the heroes here just decide in an instant to become heroes, makes their powered suits in a matter of hours and come together as a team within a few more. Which rolls back the years on superhero everything...!

It also flies in the face of the attempted (futurist) realism. I could accept that it's a parallel earth, that's it's futuristic, that's it's therefore more technologically-advanced than ours. Add to that the fact that Hiro is a genius without peer, and credibility seems to begin being stretched, but.. it's a superhero film, so that's OK, too. But then:
Spoiler:
a) with a little effort, Hiro invents working nanotech that would revolutionise EVERY industry, and b) without ANY effort he takes the ideas/tech of the rest of the Six and i) makes it relevant and applicable, and ii) turns it into functional suits.

This also undermines the rest of the six. It suggests that their intellect and skills aren't just less than Hiro's, but significantly so. Taken individually, only Go Go really gets to stand on her own feet. Fred is painted as comic relief (and even his peers mock his comics/memorabilia interest/collection). The other two seem frivolous and nervous.
Spoiler:
Honey Lemon's skills appear to be boiled down on-screen to using Science to paint something pink... Wasabi is nervous and worried about everything.

Plus the entirety of Superhero parts of the plot echoes very closely elements of The Avengers and Spider-man 2 (the villain even moves like Doc Ock!)

On the plus side, there's a surprise post-credits cameo..!

I took the melodrama to be part-and-parcel of the nostalgia trip, so it didn't bother me much. Plus, Jean Dujardin's face is so ridiculously expressive and funny that he makes everything more watchable by just being there. The first OSS 117 makes me laugh every time he smiles or laughs, just because it's him doing the smiling and laughing!

...I think you answered your concern with your point there! It's more of an allegory than a personal story, but nonetheless powerful for that.

Just from the title, I am unsurprised that the third film was underwhelming...

No kidding, though. I swear to god, he has the most endearing smile I've ever seen.

Well, see, to be an allegorical story and have a personal touch are not mutually exclusive scenarios. You can load your story with symbolism all you want, but if I don't feel anything from it, I'm not going to take anything away from it. You pack your story with symbolism to aide the personal touch. Not put on a light show. I'm making a bit of an exception because The Artist was a really pretty fireworks show that lasted all night.

---------------

Today, I watched Ted. I'm feeling lazy tonight, so I'll cheaply sum up my visceral thoughts.

Positives: The crude humor is so unabashed that you can't help but join in the fun. It's not just making the joke itself that makes the movie funny. Ted reiterates it and makes fun of the original joke to begin with! It goes up a level in comedy fairly often because of that. The three main characters aren't the assholes you'd expect them to be in the genre, and are generally likable. The setting is solid, and it's free to have fun without making you hate the lead characters. They legitimately care about each other and it's easy to immerse yourself because of this. Also: "LOOK WHAT JESUS DID! LOOK WHAT JESUS DID! LOOK WHAT JESUS DID!"

Negatives: dramadramadramadramadramadramadrama

oh wait you wanted to laugh?

too bad

And the humor gets stale, eventually. The three main characters are neat, but they aren't good enough to carry drama, really. Movie gets pretty boring because of this, and many things are left unresolved. It's too bad, but something can only stay good for so long. Actually, Ted could have been good for a longer period of time.

I was like that when I was watching my Stooges collections. I'd find that I'd burn out on them REALLY quickly, so I tried to space them out some.

All the Stooges talk convinced me to finally work on finishing Volume 8 of the Stooges collection. It's really odd seeing film shot in Academy Ratio presented in WS. Most of it works OK but in reality the only footage that works *well* is the very limited amount of new footage. All but *one* of the Shemp shorts in this set are remakes, although one short is all new material in spite of being a remake of a earlier premis. I only have a couple more Shemp shorts before the dreaded Joe Besser ones start. Unfortunately (or maybe not as I'll get it out of the way) the first Besser short is one I've *never* liked. Even as a kid I thought "Hoofs and Goofs" was too stupid and pointless to be a "real" Stooges short! Of course they had to do a sequel to this one and it's almost as bad! At least they're both on the same disc so I should be able to dispense with them in fairly quick order.

Is Hoofs and Goofs the one where their sister reincarnates as a horse? If so, I hated that one.

I just finished my first silent film of the challenge, Woman in the Moon, a comedy-drama about the first lunar expedition. It was a long movie, but was pretty good.

Yes, that's the one. Having seen it again I can reiterate that it's just as bad as it's always been. The sequel, "Horsing Around," was worse than I recalled. Having seen both for the first time in *decades* I don't understand why the second was even made as in the first one it was clearly indicated that Joe was only dreaming that Bertie was a horse. So... how can a sequel be made if she's really *not* a horse and the sequel is *not* a dream?

I blew through the Besser shorts and can still safely say they are uniformly bad. The remakes are even more pointless than those done with Shemp. At least the ones with Shemp were *funny* more often than not. Besser didn't have the chops to be in these - his ad-libs were generally poor and unfunny, his timing was frequently off, and his "act" just doesn't fit The Stooges comedy.

I also noticed that many of those shorts had Moe and Larry sporting their more "gentlemanly" haircuts that were suggested by Besser. They just do *not* look right with slicked back hair!

For some reason I'd thought "Curly Joe" did a few shorts with Moe and Larry. He did not, appearing only in the feature films they made after TV brought them back from extinction. I guess that shows just how much I blocked the post-Shemp shorts from my mind!

Oh well... at least I'm done with those and can now watch the "Lost Treasures" disc. I'm sure I'll enjoy the movies included but there are still shorts from Besser and DeRita that I'm not so sure about. I've read they're actually pretty good since they are *not* Stooges shorts but focus on their abilities. We'll see...

The Hangover/Hunger Games/(with elements of Ted, Thor, Dictator-or-Borat, Avatar, Muppets, Lone Ranger, etc., etc.) parody The Hungover Games is miles better than I expected. I enjoyed it quite a bit - it's in the same vein as Scary Movie and all those, so my expectations were suitably lowered, but... I liked it.

The idea of The Hunger Games/Battle Royale obviously lends itself to the parody idea very well, since you can just get any group of individuals/characters together and pit them against each other, so that certainly helped. And there was some actual acting ability on display, too, amidst the fourth-wall-knowing-wink "gratuitous violence" and "gratuitous nudity".

I was out of town for a couple of days. But I did manage to get in The Pink Panther. Peter Sellers.
I'll have to try hard to get in the rest of the series. As all of these are classic gems. Even the Shot in the Dark movie is excellent. I hope to get that one in also.

Thanks for the reminder. Almost every November I plan to watch my huge Pink Panther Ultimate Set or whatever it's called. I need to go to storage and find that thing before it's too late to get them all in.

I've not watched any of the Pink Panther films in several years. I really should give them a spin, even those later ones after Sellers passed. Other than TV shows I don't have a huge backlog of comedy films in the unopened pile so I could work these in without feeling too guilty, and they *are* favorite films!

I might slow down some just for this week. The Science Channel is running a week of programs all about space, and those are some of my favorite documentary genres.

If you miss out this month, might I suggest you watch them in May (and if you're really adventurous, mix them in with 007 films - it's kind of funny how much crossover those two series had).

I haven't watched much that I can list. I've been trying to catch up on a few shows.

Wow. That's another series I need to watch. I think your idea just knocked my socks off.

Re: The Fourth Annual November Comedy Challenge *Discussion Thread* Nov 1-30, 2014

I realized that a lot of my unwatched comedies matched the theme nights, so I've been focusing on those for this challenge. Missed a couple of nights because of real life, but I'm pleased with what I've done so far.

Did have a quick question. Would an actor on the Muppet Show count for the checklist item: " a film starring a stand-up comedian (performing his/her stand-up act)?" I'm thinking of the Steve Martin one. He does a short bit on balloons and is playing himself...

Going to start Bananas in a few minutes then finish off the day with A Shot in the Dark.
