Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

My goal is to just watch as many movies as I can and have fun.

*= first time viewing

9-30
1. Nightmare (Code Red Blu-Ray)- Such a great sleazy slasher, this was my third time watching it and I seem to enjoy it more each time.

10-1
2. Frightmare (Vestron VHS)- Not the Pete Walker film, but the Norman Thadeus Vane film about a Christopher Lee-esque star that dies and has his dead body taken from his tomb by young film students. After this the students are killed off one by one by the dead star. Pretty good film but nothing ground breaking, this was one of Jeffrey Combs' first movies (pre- Re-Animator).

10-2
3. Raw Force (Vinegar Syndrome Blu-Ray)- The new blu-ray transfer looked so good it was like watching it for the first time.

10-3
None

10-4
4. Dracula Sucks * (Vinegar Syndrome Dvd)

5. The Sacrament (Netflix Instant)

10-5
6. Hatchet II (Dark Sky Blu-Ray)

10-6
7. Zodiac * (Netflix Instant)

10-7
8. The First Power * (Scorpion Releasing Blu-Ray)

10-8
None

10-9
9. Cards of Death (Bleeding Skull VHS)

10. Fright Night (1985) (Netflix Instant)

11. Birth of the Living Dead * (Netflix Instant)

10-10
None

10-11
12. The Horror Show * (Netflix Instant)

10-12
13. The Walking Dead "A"(1/2 entry)

The Walking Dead "No Sanctuary" *(1/2 entry)
(TV)

10-13
14. Horns (2013) * (Amazon Instant)

10-14
15. Holliston "Weekend of Horrors" (1/4 entry)

Holliston "Laura's Little Twitter" (1/4 entry leftover from 10-7) (Image Blu-Ray)

Talking Dead "No Sanctuary" * (1/2 entry leftover from 10-12) (TV)

11 first time views (not including Fury since it's not horror or tv shows)

Best FTVs-Evils of the Night is tied for the best first time view of my marathon and is sure to be a film that will get many repeated viewings. Nightbreed the Director's Cut is the other tie for best first time view and was incredible I can't believe this cut wasn't the original theatrical cut. What can I say I like campy and serious so I couldn't decide on which I liked best. Zodiac was amazing but since it isn't straight up horror I didn't nominate it as the best (I only have used 2 wild cards so if this doesn't count as horror just consider this my last wild card). The Nostril Picker was also great, really sleazy and fun. The Soultangler was another fun film, although I wish it had focused more on the mad doctor it is still definitely worth picking up. Horns wasn't perfect but it was pretty original and I really dug it, so far Alexandre Aja has never disappointed me. I really enjoyed Birth of the Living Dead and would really like to see the documentary on Dawn of the Dead now. The First Power was a great example of the saying "they don't make them like they used to" especially with that awesome 10 story building jump stunt, and is a great turn your burn off and enjoy kind of movie.

Worst FTV-The Town That Dreaded Sundown remake not only takes the cake as the worst movie of my marathon, it takes the cake as the worst movie I've seen all year and the worst horror movie I've seen in a long time.

Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

THE LIST THAT DREADED SUNDOWN

Even if it costs me my very sanity... I'M IN FOR THE 100!
Self-imposed guidelines: Watch mostly from my own personal collection - at least half or more of my list AND watch ALL of my Stephen King movie/TV/mini-series adaptations that I own.

☼ = First time views
Title in BLACK = DVD / Blu Ray from my personal collection.
Title in RED = Seen online (Netflix / Youtube).
Title in BLUE = DVD / Blu Ray rental.
Title in GREEN = Seen in movie theatre during its current theatrical run.
Title in PURPLE = Seen on TV during regular programming.
= A movie that I saw in the past during it's original theatrical run.

OCTOBER 1
1. Theme Night: Bathroom / Kitchen Horror:
The Shining
(1980) A classic, pure and simple. Yes I know Stephen King disavows this movie but the changes that director Stanley Kubrick made were for the better. And yes, I have read the original novel so I know whereof I speak. I've seen it many times but I had not owned the movie until now since I was waiting to come across an inexpensive Blu Ray copy. The Blu Ray looks fantastic by the way.

OCTOBER 2
2. Theme Night: Summer-Themed Horror:
The Wicker Man
(1973) The movie is set on SUMMERisle so I'm going with that as an excuse to include it in this theme. Was waiting for the challenge to crack open my special edition Blu Ray. The film looks great restored and plus some added scenes that I had not seen before - another classic that is a must-see and a must-own for any horror fan
3. The Dead Zone (1983) Director David Cronenberg deftly jettisons entire sections of the book while keeping true to the story and delivering an excellent movie - no mean feat. The only drawback is Christopher Walken's manner-filled performance which can be a bit over the top at times.
4. 'Salem's Lot - TV mini-series Part 1 (2004)

October 3
5. 'Salem's Lot - TV mini-series Part 2
(2004) Snail-paced adaptation of one of Stephen King's best novels. It has its moments but they are few and far between. I'll stick with the 70's version, thank you.
6. 31 Film Subset: Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) Heather Langenkamp returns to reprise the role of Nancy as she helps a bunch of kids in a psych ward to fight Freddy. Some interesting kills and the effects are pretty good. Not as good as the original but after the dissapointing sequel this was a welcome return to form.

October 4
7. Theme Night: Teen Screams:
Carrie
(2013) Remake that adds nothing new to the story but is nonetheless an entertaining watch.
8. Graveyard Shift☼ (1990) Tepid tale about a rat-infested cotton mill under which a giant bat-rat dwells. Yawn-inducing.

October 5
9. Theme Night: Deserted Island Horrors:
The Food of the Gods
(1976) The "food" in question is a substance that makes animals grow to gigantic size. This sets the stage for some islanders fighting of giant wasps and rats. Enjoyable despite its cheesines.
10. Fear Itself: Dark Memories AKA Ring Around the Rosie☼ (2006) Gina Philips (Jeepers Creepers) stars in this movie about a woman who visits her childhood home and is accosted by its caretaker. Some ghostly goings-on add to the story which never really add up to anything.
11. The Ruins (2008) Excellent adaptation of the novel of the same name about a group of tourists trapped in an ancient mayan temple. To say more would be to ruin it for those that have not seen it. Suffice to say that a simple premise goes a long way when well executed and this is one such case. Highly reccomended.

October 6
12. Deadtime Stories, Vol. 2
☼ (2011) George Romero hosts Cryptkeeper-style a trio of terror tales that are mediocre at best. The first and best one is where a trio of cave explorers get trapped in a cave for days but this one is ruined by the cheesy ending. The second one about a vengeful ghost is s-l-o-w to the point of numbness and the third one about a security guard trying to cure his wife's cancer with dust from Mars just falls flat.
13. Theme Night: 1989: Pet Sematary (1989) Perhaps the creepiest of all of Stephen King adaptations. Director Mary Lambert and Stephen King's own script really hit home as they explore that most basic of fears - death itself, or rather the refusal to accept the death of a loved one. Seen with commentary by director Mary Lambert.

October 7
14. Theme Night: Horror Movies With Original Songs:
Bram Stoker's Dracula
(1992) Song: Love Song for a Vampire by Annie Lennox.
15. Bates Motel, S1☼ (2013) Episodes: First you dream, then you die / Nice town you picked, Norma A show that is all about foreshadowing would get old pretty soon but this one manages to give us not only insight into Norman Bate's early life but also add some new mysteries into the mix. A slow burn to be sure but worth it especially for Vera Fermiga as Norma Bates who really lifts this series above its simple premise.

October 8
16. Theme Night: Werewolves:
Wer
☼ (2013) Finally someone does something original with the werewolf genre. A man accused of a grisly murder is defended by a well-meaning lawyer who tries to convince the police that he could not have been responsible since he suffers from a debilitating disease. The French setting gives this one a different feel as does the documentary-style camerawork that gladly never degenerates into found-footage stupidity.
17. 31 Film Subset: The Howling (1981) A classic that continues to hold up. The only thing here that is dated are the lame attempts at humour.
18. Bates Motel, S1☼ (2013) Episodes: What's wrong with Norman / Trust me

October 9
19. Theme Night: Food Industry Terror:
The Undertaker and His pals
☼ (1966) Totally un-funny horror comedy about an undertaker that supplies a diner with people to chop up and put on the menu. Strictly bottom of the barrel.
20. 31 Film Subset: A Bucket of Blood☼ (1959) Dick Miller as an aspiring sculptor who works in a beatnik bar. Predictable fare that is only of interest for its depiction of the beatnik scene at the time.
20. Bates Motel, S1☼ (2013) Episodes: Ocean view / The truth
21. Silver Bullet (1985) Another mediocre Stephen King adaptation that relies on the sentimentality of having a wheelchair-bound kid protagonist who discovers a werewolf in his town.

October 10
22. Theme Night: Erotic Horror:
The Vampire Lovers
(1970) I could stare at Ingrid Pitt all day and dream about her all night so anything I have to say about this movie is heavily biased. Suffice to say that this is one of Hammer's best and classiest pictures with great sets and cinematography that go far beyond the modest budget. Ingrid Pitt is of course riveting every moment she is on screen and Madeline Smith is fantastic as well as the beautiful ingenue seduced by Carmilla (Pitt). Seen with commentary by the filmmakers and Ingrid Pitt herself who unfortunately does not say much but when she does her husky voice is a joy to hear.

October 11
23. Theme Night: 35 Years of Fangoria Covers:
Bad Moon
(1996) Fangoria No. 158, 1996 Modest yet effective werewolf tale about a man who moves in next to his sister and nephew but must control his nightly transformations by chaining himself to a tree. The only one that suspects that something is amiss is the family dog.

October 12 - Christina Ricci Quadruple Feature Marathon!
24. Theme Night: Graveyard Horrors:
After.Life
(2006) A young woman (Ricci) is in a car accident and falls into the hand of a mortician (Liam Neeson) who claims to talk to the dead. Is she really dead or under the trap of this man? Played in a very low-key manner this sort of ghost story manages to keep your interest with a good story and some great visuals amongst them Ricci herself who is either nude or in a sexy red slip most of the movie.
25. Cursed (2005) Wes Craven directs this werewolf movie that could have been much, much better. Christina Ricci and the annoying Jesse Eisenberg (who seems to have trademarked his acting style) star as sister and brother who are attacked by a werewolf. As they both start to exhibit wolf-like behaviour the hunt is on to find out who their attacker was and stop the curse. The ridiculous attempts at self-referential humor kill any sense of suspene and there were even some scenes that were straight out of Teen Wolf.
26. Lizzy Borden Took an Ax (2014)
27. The Gathering (2003)
28. Bates Motel☼ (2013) Episodes: The man in number 9 / A boy and his dog

October 13
29. Theme Night: Before They Were Famous:
Leprachaun
☼ (1993) I had never seen this movie and now I realise I wasn't missing much. How this flick spawned so many sequels is almost as boggling as the Children of the Corn series. Jennifer Aniston was pretty hot, though, so it was worth it for that.
30. Bates Motel☼ (2013) Episodes: Underwater / Midnight

October 14
31. Theme Night: Motorcycle Horror:
The Lost Boys
(1987) Very much a product of it's time this vampire flick sets out to reinvent the genre by presenting vampires as cool and hip - it had been done before but this one really takes it over the top. Director Joel Schumaker helms this movie with a sense of style and humour that has made this a fan favourite. Hadn't seen it since back in the day but it still holds up.

October 15
32. Theme Night: Asian Horror:
They Wait
☼ (2007) A Canadian production with Asian themes and an almost all-Asian cast with the exception of Jaime King who plays the mother of a boy who sees ghosts during "Hungry Ghost Month". Pretty decent if somewhat predictable fare.
33. American Horror Story, S2 (2012) Episodes: Welcome to Briarcliff / Tricks and treats
34. The Invisible Man☼ (1933)

October 16
35. Theme Night: Retail Establishment Terror:
[COLOR="Red"]The Mist/COLOR]
☼(2007) Quite possibly the best Stephen King adaptation ever and I realise that's not saying much considering the (too) many lame movies that have been made from King's novels. Here writer-director Frank Darabont keeps King's trademark character development but never loses the reigns of his thigthly-told story. He stays mostly faithful to King's novella but also nows that a verbatim adaptation would not work and makes changes when needed. Main among these is the ending which totally blows King's ambiguous finale out of the water and one that hits me like a sledge hammer every time I see it.
36. American Horror Story, S2 (2012) Episodes: Nor'easter / I am Anne Frank Part 1

October 17
37. Theme Night: Demented Dads and Bad Mothas:
Red Riding Hood
(2011) Another so-called re-telling of a faerie tale but giving it some darker elements. The notion that the wolf in the Red Riding Hood story is hardly nobel and the whole thing plays like an instalment of the Twilight franchise complete with teen angst amongst the supernatural goings-on. Those who have seen the film will know why it fits this Theme Night.
38. American Horror Story, S2 (2012) Episodes: I am Anne Frank Part 2 / The origins of monstrosity

October 18
39. Theme Night: 1980's Video Companies:
Mysterious Two
☼ (1982)

October 19
40. Theme Night: Slashers:
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
(1995)
41. The Bay☼ (2012)

October 20
42. Theme Night: Vampires:
Lĺt den rätte komma in (Let the Right One In)
(2008)
43. American Horror Story (2012) Episodes: Dark cousin / Unholy night
44. Lovely Molly (2011)

October 21
45. Theme Night: Planes, Trains and Automobiles:
The Car
(1977)
46. The Quiet Ones (2014)
46 1/2. Lovely Molly / The Quiet Ones - Special Features (2011/2014)

October 22
47. 31 Film Subset / Theme Night: Sibling Rivalry:
The Uninvited
(2009)
48. Piranha 3DD☼ (2012)
49 American Horror Story, S2 (2011) Episodes: The coat hangar / The name game

October 23
50. 31 Film Subset / Theme Night: Mario Bava:
Black Sunday AKA The Mask of Satan
(1960)

October 24
51 American Horror Story
, S2 (2011) Episodes: Spilt milk / Continuum

October 25
52. Theme Night: Drive-In Double Feature - Part 1:
Deadly Blessing
(1981)
53. Theme Night: Drive-In Double Feature - Part 2: He Knows You're Alone
☼ (1980)
54. The Conjuring (2013)

October 26
55. Theme Night: Supernatural:
Annabelle
☼ (2014)
56. One Dark Night (1982)

October 27
57. Theme Night: Anthologies:
Deadtime Stories[B]☼ (1986)
58. Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)

October 28
59. Theme Night: Masked Killers:
You're Next
☼ (2011)
60. Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)

October 29
61. Theme Night: Creature Feature:
The Angry Red Planet
☼ (1959) All you would expect from a 50's sic-fi flick. Complete with giant bug-eyed monsters and square characters. The movie uses tinted film to portray the other-worldiness of Mars and it works quite well. Enjoy it for what it is.

October 30
62. Theme Night: Possession:
Jennifer's Body
(2009)
63. The Remaining☼ (2014) I feared that this might be yet another found-footage piece of crap but it wasn't. This doesn't mean it was any good but at least it wasn't awful. A story about a bunch of annoying young people surviving The Rapture and facing demons that bring about the end of times. Could have been much better.

October 31
64. Theme Night: Halloween-Related:
Sleepy Hollow
(1999) One of the last good Tim Burton movies but this is where he started to "reimagine" classics so I have mixed feelings about it.
65. American Horror Story, S2 (2013) Episode: Madness ends (The length of this episodes along with the Special Features seen for Lovely Molly and The Quiet Ones, add up to one entry)
66. Come Out and Play☼ (2012) A bunch of kids go psycho on a Mexican Island for no apparent reason. The kids are creepy enough but the story just goes nowhere. Mildly amusing.

Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

Melmoth's List

GOAL: 100
First Time View: *
Ratings:
A - Highly Recommended
B- Liked
C - Average
D- Poor
F -Terrible

September 30th, dusk

1. The Keep (1983) * Rating: D (Netflix Streaming)
I would recommend this for the cast but I thought it had a weak middle, the romance subplot seemed contrived and veered the plot off course.
2. The Uninvited (1944) * - Rating: C (Netflix DVD) (Theme Night) (31 Film Subset)
Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Had some effective scenes but I felt the humor lightened the mood too much for my tastes

October 1st

3. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) * - Rating: B (TV)(Theme Night)
Can't beat the phantom of the opera unmasked scene reenacted by gremlins, brilliant. I liked it better than the first and thought it had better characters overall, like Christopher Lee & the horror host.
4. The Scorcerers (1967) * Rating: B (DVD-R)
So, a movie about old people getting off on young peoples sensations, actually pretty appealing because of Karloff & his wife, they did a good job in this movie and basically it illustrates a moral test I think a lot of people would fail if given that kind of power.
5. The Monster Club (1981) * Rating: B (Blu-Ray)
I recommend this to anyone who loves classic monsters, the stories have a very Hammer feel even though it came out in the 80's, I didn't even think movies like this were still being made in that decade. It is just fun with a great cast.
6. Stalled (2013) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming) (Theme Night) (31 Film Subset)
I think when the zombies become the background and the movie is more about human interaction, you have a successful zombie movie, and this succeed, especially for what looked like a low budget. Pleasant surprise.
7. Sinister (2012) * Rating: A (TV)
One of the more genuinely scary movies I've seen in a while, I felt chills quite a few times while watching it, highly recommended.

October 2nd

8. Wolf Creek (2005) * Rating: B (Netflix DVD) (Theme Night)
If you're looking for a vacation from hell movie, this is a good one to watch. Tension & a decent killer, recommended.
9. "Hammer House of Horror" The House that Bled to Death (TV episode 1980) * Rating: C (DVD) & "Hammer House of Horror" Charlie-Boy (TV episode 1980) * Rating: C (DVD)
The better of these two episodes would be the House that Bled to death, the highlight being the children's birthday party scene, that was brilliant whoever thought that up, but the scene should have lasted longer.
10. You'll Find Out (1940) * Rating: C (DVD)
The first hour wasn't much of a horror film but it started picking up in the last act and what makes this movie special is of course seeing Bela, Karloff, & Lorre together as villains.
11. The Carrier (1988) * Rating: F (Youtube Streaming) (31 Film Subset)
I could barely get through this, if it wasn't for the challenge I would have turned it off. Plot was a mess, hell everything was a mess, I would need a MST3K track to even begin to make this watchable.
12. Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995) * Rating: C (TV)
It was okay, I felt it dragged in places.

October 3rd

13. You're Next (2011) * Rating: A (Netflix Streaming)
I had a lot of fun watching this. It has an interesting dynamic that all the victims in this slasher are related to each other. A good batten down the hatches, fight for your life film.
14. Demons of the Mind (1972) * Rating: C (DVD) (Theme Night)
One of the weirder Hammer films. I enjoyed the 19th century dressing, the plot wasn't that impressive.
15. Sleepwalkers (1992) * Rating: B (Netflix DVD) (Theme Night)
Madchen Amick, I like her from Twin Peaks, she brightened up this movie, plus the heroic cat, Linus I think?, he was cool.
16. V/H/S/2 (2013) * Rating: C (Netflix Streaming)
I favor the 1st movie. The segments with the weird chick & Ti West's from the first are still my favorites over any of these but the Cult segment was interesting and gorey. Thing about the V/H/S movies, they are fun to watch just nothing I feel like praising afterwards.

October 4th

17. Near Dark (1987) * Rating: B (TV)
Not as fun as Lost Boys but, had similar approach to vampires, one of the better contemporary vampire movies I've seen.
18. Witchfinder General (1968) * Rating: B (Blu-Ray)
One of Vincent Price's better roles, I think. Plays out the witch trials in a more historical way. Well worth watching for Vincent price's character.
19. All Cheerleaders Die (2013) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming) (Theme Night)
This was fun, I like Lucky McKee's humor, plus it had lots to do with wicca. I don't know if the "part one" thing was a joke, but I would like a part two if it is coming.

October 5th
20. Evil Dead (2013) * Rating: B (TV)
This was a good remake, I'm kind of tired of homages to the originals in remakes. I wish they would just play it out like a sequel which this one seemed to be doing until the chainsaw and hand part.
21. Two Evil Eyes (1990) * Rating: C (Blu-Ray)
I like the Vincent price versions of these stories more, but I am glad this contemporary version exists. I will say, no matter how familiar I am with the ending of Black Cat, I still find it suspenseful every time I see it played out.
22. Come Out and Play (2012) * Rating: D (Netflix Streaming)
Basically a Mexican version of Children of the Corn. Netflix was streaming the hearing impaired version, which was really distracting and I felt it lessened my enjoyment of it, but nothing really stood out to me except for the ending which I liked.
23. Bordello of Blood (1996) * Rating: B (TV)
I think I read that the majority likes Demon Knight better, but I prefer Bordello, probably because I'm partial to vampires.

October 6th
24. Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996) * Rating: C (Neflix Streaming)
The scenes I really liked in this movie were the 18th century scenes, it made me really yearn for a full length period Hellraiser. I think the cenobites would clash really well with that era. This is a big cinema wish of mine that will probably never happen. The modern day portion wasn't that great, this one actually played like a anthology film.
25. The Comedy of Terrors (1963) * Rating: B (Blu-Ray)
I thought this was pretty damn hilarious, Karloff, Price... everyone did a great job, rewatchable.
26. See No Evil (2006) * Rating: C (TV)
Average slasher, entertaining but nothing I'd heap praises on. Sought it out so I'd be ready for the sequel that seems promising.
27. The Blair Witch Project (1999) * Rating: A (Neflix Streaming)
Lots of tension, gave me a good thrill after it was over which admirable since it never actually shows anything. And yes, another horror classic I took forever to see, thank you Netflix.

October 7th

28. Nurse 3D (2013) * Rating: D (TV)
This movie just seemed too soap opera-ish. I didn't like it, but worth the watch I guess if you like Paz.
29. The Whip and the Body (1963) * Rating: B (Blu-Ray)
Gothic horror with multiple scenes of Christopher lee whipping a lovely beauty, definitely a film for me.
30. "Tales from the Crypt" Loved to Death (TV episode 1991) * Rating: B (DVD) & "Tales from the Crypt" Carrion Death (TV episode 1991) * Rating: A (DVD) &
"Tales from the Crypt" The Trap (TV episode 1991) * Rating: C (DVD) & "Tales from the Crypt" Abra Cadaver (TV episode 1991) * Rating: B (DVD)
31. Stage Fright (2014) * Rating: C (Netflix Streaming)
I'm in to horror musicals but this one wasn't that great.

October 8th

32. Cat People (1982) * Rating: B (Netflix DVD)
Fuck yes to Bowie's theme. and this movie is basically a more mature version of the original that I love, but not necessarily better.
33. Howling V: The Rebirth (1989) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming)
I liked this movie because it had a old school gothic horror feel, the whole plot was just interesting for a werewolf film.
34. Black Sheep (2006) * Rating: D (Netflix DVD)
I think the idea is humorous but I was just bored through most of it.

October 9th

35. "Rose Red" Episode #1.1 (TV Episode 2002) * Rating: B (DVD)
36. "Rose Red" Episode #1.2 (TV Episode 2002) * Rating: B (DVD)
37. A Bucket of Blood (1959) * Rating: B (TV)
Has the same sort of feel as Little Shop of Horrors, I enjoyed it,, surprised I missed seeing this for so long, I've seen a ton of Corman's classics and this was one of his best.

October 10th
38. New Year's Evil (1980) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming)
Such a fun campy film "I'm EEEEVIL!"
39. "Rose Red" Episode #1.3 (TV Episode 2002) * Rating: B (DVD)
Rose Red was halfway decent. The 4+ hour run time makes the story feel dragged out, I felt the same way about the shining mini-series, but Emery is a stand out character, a Harold Lauder type.
40. Jennifer's Body (2009) * Rating: B (Netflix DVD)
Surprised I liked this, not a fan of Megan Fox but for teen demon rituals films, it was good. Reminded me of the Hack/Slash comics.

October 11th
41. "Tales from the Crypt" Top Billing (TV episode 1991) * Rating: B (DVD) & "Tales from the Crypt" Dead Wait (TV episode 1991) * Rating: A (DVD) &
"Tales from the Crypt" The Reluctant Vampire (TV episode 1991) * Rating: B (DVD) & "Tales from the Crypt" Easel Kill Ya (TV episode 1991) * Rating: B (DVD)
All decent episodes, Dead Wait stood out for it's gross factor.
42. Slumber Party Massacre III (1990) * Rating: A (DVD)
Greatest movie ever but I was drunk while watching it so...
37. Scanners (1981) * Rating: C (TV)
I wasn't crazy about it, it was a bit slow, effects were good.
43. Visiting Hours (1982) * Rating: D (Netflix Streaming)
This bored me, which is rare for an 80's slasher to do.

October 12th
44. Sightseers (2012) * Rating: C (Netflix Streaming)
There were some funny parts but overall I didn't care for it, not a huge fan of indie comedies like this.
45. The Phantom of the Opera (1989) * Rating: C (Netflix Streaming)
Definitely not my favorite version of Phantom but it was interesting to see a gory version.
46. "Hammer House of Horror" The Silent Scream (TV episode 1980) * Rating: A (DVD) & "Hammer House of Horror" Children of the Full Moon (TV episode 1980) * Rating: A (DVD)
Best episodes I've seen from this series so far.
47. Underworld (2003) * Rating: C (TV)
Big Budget action horror generally bores me, this was no different but Bill Nighy's character was cool.
October 13th
48. Return of the Fly (1959) * Rating: C (Blu-Ray)
Big step down from the first but at least they didn't copy it and I was somewhat curious about if
Spoiler:
it was posible to reverse the slpicing, which this film showed.

49. The Sacrament (2013) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming)
Not my favorite of Ti West but it was fairly suspenseful for the first hour before things go crazy.
50. Scream of Fear (1961) * Rating: C DVD
This movie has it's charms. It is slow but the twists and a decent mystery makes it interesting.

October 14th
51. Wake Wood (2010) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming)
Excellent part to see Timothy Spall in. Decent gore and tough to watch if you like animals.
52. Ravenous (1999) * Rating: C (Netflix Streaming)
The first 40 minutes were very good but it got rather dull after and didn't pick up again until the last 20 minutes.

October 15th
53. Insidious (2010) * Rating: B Netflix DVD
What stood this movie out for me was the astral projection topic, those scenes were very interesting, and like The Conjuring, it reminded me of Poltergeist.
54. Hostel (2005) * Rating: A (TV)
I liked the pacing, very suspenseful and brutal.
55. Hostel: Part III (2011) * Rating: C (Netflix Streaming)
I primarily watched this to see how this scenario goes down in Las Vegas because that is a place I've been to, so thought it would make it more interesting. This looks a lot cheaper than the previous one and it played that way. Not even in the same league as Roth and not very intense.
56. "The Walking Dead" Internment(TV episode 2013) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming) & "The Walking Dead" Live Bait (TV episode 2013) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming)
Just now getting caught up with season 4 because Netflix has spoiled me to wait for shows to stream so I don't have to deal with commercials. These episodes were alright.
57. "The Walking Dead" Dead Weight (TV Episode 2013) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming) & "The Walking Dead" Too Far Gone (TV Episode 2013) * Rating: B (Netflix Streaming)
The govenor episodes were the best of the season so far.

October 16th
58. The Mummy's Hand (1940) * Rating: C DVD
Things I liked about this movie:mummy is creepier than original; George Zucco; Wallace Ford carrying around a doll named Poopsie; there was a magician. Things I didn't like: It was slow, mummy doesn't appear until over half way into the movie + I thought it was strange Zuccos's character goes all Imohtep at the end.
59. The Mummy's Tomb (1942) * Rating: C DVD
So this one gets right down to business with the mummy which fixes my primary criticism with the previous film but I ended up liking it less, probably because of the American setting + 10 minutes of recap at the beginning + lame ending.
60. "The Walking Dead" After (TV Episode 2014) * Rating: C Netflix Streaming & "The Walking Dead" Inmates (TV Episode 2014) * Rating: C Netflix Streaming
A couple of boring episodes.
61. Dead Silence (2007) * Rating: C Netflix Streaming
I liked the parts featuring Mary Shaw & her dolls but the rest of the characters were kind of boring, plot was just passable.

October 17th
62. We Are What We Are (2013) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
A bit slow but an interesting take on modern American cannibalism.
63. The Human Centipede (First Sequence) 2009 * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
I didn't think I would like this movie but it is actually pretty suspenseful. Plus it had dark humor and Dieter Laser was too good in this.
64. The Brood (1979) * Rating: B TV
Those children in those pajamas, terrifying.
65. "Hammer House of Horror" Carpathian Eagle (TV Episode 1980) * Rating: A DVD & "Hammer House of Horror" Guardian of the Abyss (TV Episode 1980) * Rating: B DVD
Shaking things up with a woman killer who preys on men in Carpathian Eagle, I dug it & Guardians of the abyss is pretty good for occult lovers.

October 18th
66. The Hills Have Eyes (2006) * Rating: B TV
Pretty much the same as the original but a little more intense.

67. Annabelle (2014) * Rating: B Theater
Did not live up to The Conjuring, wanted it to be more like the beginning of the conjuring, too much use of the demon which I felt took away from the doll but it was at least semi-decent.

October 19th
68. Big Driver (TV Movie 2014) * Rating: B TV
This was my favorite story from Full Dark, No Stars, and it was a very loyal adaptation.
69. Jack's Back (1988) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
It has that 80's vibe going for it, thught it was a decent crime film.
70. Sorority House Massacre (1986) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
Goofy 80's slasher, pretty fun.
71. House of Wax (2005) * Rating: B TV
Surprisingly I liked this. I'm for remakes that go in a totally different direction and the climactic fight in the wax museum was trippy.
72. Detention (2011) * Rating: D Netflix Streaming
This movie got some laughs from me but I feel it was trying to hard to be like Scream and it was all over the place in plot.

October 20th
73. The Changeling (1980) * Rating: B Netflix DVD
Nice creepy atmosphere, the story is good, and + for George C. Scott.
74. Blacula (1972) * Rating: C DVD
Has the charms of the 70's, William Marshall has great presence as a vampire, but it was just alright, I thought it was a little slow.
75. Bride of the Monster (1955) Rating: B DVD (Happy Birthday Bela Lugosi)
I think this is Ed Woods best, even in camp fests Lugosi blows me away.
76. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) Rating: B DVD (Happy Birthday Bela Lugosi)
What a classic, best one that brings all the monsters together.

October 21th
77. The Lair of the White Worm (1988) * Rating: A Netflix Streaming
Sexy weird, trippy, pagan snake gods, makes a good double feature with Dagon.
78. "The Walking Dead" Claimed (TV Episode 2014) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming & "The Walking Dead" Still (TV Episode 2014) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
Getting more suspenseful after the slower 2 before it.
79. "The Walking Dead" Alone (TV Episode 2014) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming & "The Walking Dead" The Grove (TV Episode 2014) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
80. "The Walking Dead" Us (TV Episode 2014) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming & "The Walking Dead" A (TV Episode 2014) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
So, the later half of season four turned out alright, better than the first half even though everyone was separated.
81. Countess Dracula (1971) Rating: B Blu-Ray
Can't beat Ingrid Pitt, but I watched The Countess (2009) earlier this year and think it has finally dethroned this for best Bathory story.

October 22th

82. The Prowler (1981) * Rating: C Netflix DVD
I wasn't that impressed, I thought it was slow.
83. Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
Liked it better than the first, I think it was weirder and the back story of the Old Woman demon really makes this film.
84. Curse of the Demon (1957) * Rating: B TV
Occult goodness, One of the better American horror films from the 50's, but not much of a surprise as Jacques Turneur directed.

October 23rd

85. Intruder (1989) * Rating: B Blu-Ray
There are some great kills in this movie, not too suspenseful though.
86. The Uninvited (2009) * Rating: B Netflix DVD
The original was much creepier but this was faster paced and has the charms of Emily Browning.
87. The Sentinel (1977) * Rating: B TV
This movie was really good, a lot of strangeness with Burgess Merideth and the tenants of the brownstone, plus a good story.

October 24th
88. When a Stranger Calls (1979) * Rating: B Blu-Ray
The first 20 minutes make this movie, always like Durning showing up in horror.
89. The Bay (2012) * Rating: B Netflix Streaming
Not the most exciting found footage film but for sea horrors it was decent.
90. Jeepers Creepers (2001) * Rating: B Netflix DVD
The road rage parts in the beginning were my favorite but Jeepers is a creepy enjoyable villain.

Re: The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

****LIST COMPLETE****

52 watched, 22 first time viewings.

Goal - at least 50 watched, complete theme nights.

First time viewings are in orange

October 1st

1: Scary Movie (1991) [Youtube] - a paranoid prude fears that an escaped psycho has taken up residence in the annual Halloween spook house. Filmed in the Austin area and starring a young John Hawkes, this rare indie possesses some distinct similarities to the same year's Haunted-ween. It does wind up being quite different, going in a unique, more psychological direction for this type of movie. That's not enough to make it all that interesting, however, as it's mainly a bunch of wandering around the spook house. It has it's charms, no doubt, but the whole thing is rather forgettable overall. It's weird seeing Hawkes as such a dorky type after enjoying his more intense roles in recent fare, such as Winter's Bone and Martha Marcy May Marlene.

2: The Fearmaker (1971) [Youtube] - soapy horror from Mexico. Following their wheelchair-bound father's fatal tumble down a cliff, an opera singer returns home to look after her younger sister. Murder and melodramatic mayhem ensues. The one thing you can always bank on with Mexican horror is that there will be great atmosphere. That's really the best thing that can be said about this one, though the opening demise of the father is memorable and the method of murder devised by the killer is inspired. Unfortunately, most of the film gets bogged down in the aforementioned melodramatics, and the younger daughter in particular comes off as especially soapy, spoiled and unappreciative. The ending also comes as no surprise.

3: The Broken Mirror (1988) [Youtube] - aka The Murder Secret and Don't Be Afraid of Aunt Martha. I had no idea this fit today's theme until I watched it. Good thing it did, as I didn't get the chance to squeeze another film in. A man's aunt has just been released from a mental institute. He and his family accept an invitation to her remote villa, but she's not there when they arrive and something seems amiss. Fulci produced this minor Italian nasty from Burial Ground director, Mario Bianchi. There's a great soundtrack and some gruesome killings, including a kid who has his head severed via chainsaw, but things go off the rails with an over the top killer, the resulting climax falling flat on it's face. The final scene is also a head-scratcher, and a sequence involving the lead visiting the handyman's cottage has a pretty screwy timeline. It's supposedly a short walk into the woods, but his wife, who dropped him off on her way to town, gets back to the villa before he even reaches his destination. Flaws aside, I still wound up enjoying The Broken Mirror for the schlocky entertainment it is, and Jessica Moore as the buxom daughter is quite the sight for sore eyes. By the way, the title winds up having nothing to do with anything.

October 2nd

4: Jaws 3-D (1983) [IFC/DVR recording] - I hadn't seen this in well over a decade. In fact, I think it was the mid-90s last time I watched it. I hated it back then, but seeing that it was coming on TV, I figured I'd finally give it another chance. I have to admit, I enjoyed it much more this time around, albeit as a cheesy treat more than anything. That said, I actually like the change of pace from the others, setting the action in a sea park. It adds to the fun. The presence of the gorgeous Bess Armstrong didn't hurt either. Also, despite the camp factor, I actually thought the shark in this one was pretty menacing. There are some effective scenes of it appearing out of nowhere. The shark hunter's demise deserves special mention, as it would be one of the worst things you could possibly imagine.

October 3rd

5: The Slayer (1982) [VHS] - Kay is accompanied by her husband, brother and sister in-law for a relaxing stay on a remote island. Plagued by horrible dreams, she soon fears that the monster ruining her sleep is coming to kill them all. This is a very underrated slasher with an exceptionally atmospheric island locale, lonely and windswept. The dream aspect is interesting, the monster seemingly being a manifestation born of a troubled psyche. I like that, despite her issues, Kay is never deemed crazy by the others. That happens too often in other films, and tends to make for unlikable characters. Everything leads up to a uniquely downbeat ending. Be sure to watch the uncut version.

6: The Premonition (1976) [VHS] - an unhinged woman, with the help of her carnival clown acquaintance, kidnaps the daughter she was forced to give up. The girl's adoptive mother attempts using psychic visions to get her back. This Mississippi-lensed slice of regional horror is one of the most underrated I've come across. Just take a look at it's absurd IMDb rating. Yes, it does have it's problems. For one, the development of ESP in Sheri seems to be a bit too coincidental after her husband just met an expert on the subject. That said, this is a beautiful film, especially from an emotional standpoint. It's a strictly low key affair, very character-driven. The sorrowful atmosphere is vividly rendered, feeling like a mixture between Val Lewton, Carnival of Souls and Let's Scare Jessica to Death. The climactic sequence is a thing of beauty in regard to how it relates to the characters. Sharon Farrell and Richard Lynch are great, though it's Ellen Barber who steals the show.

7: Don't Panic (1989) [Youtube] - Michael's friends insist on playing with his mother's ouija board and, unbeknownst to the others, one of them winds up possessed. Michael soon starts experiencing visions of the resultant killing spree. This corny Mexican slasher borrows a lot from the A Nightmare on Elm Street series. It also has a lead character, a high schooler no less, who runs around for half of the movie in his kiddie pajamas. What self-respecting teen would wear those? He looks absolutely ridiculous, and it's painfully distracting. I was shocked to see that the most attractive girl in the cast went on to be Midajah, Scott Steiner's valet in WCW.

October 4th

8: Satan Place: A Soap Opera from Hell (1990) [Youtube] - wow, what a trip! This incredibly obscure anthology doesn't even have five votes on IMDB. It's quite the experience, definitely one of a kind low-budget madness. There are four stories - a slob has to dispose of the wife he murdered, a drunk accidentally runs over a mysterious old man, a girl's mother disapproves of her tendency to watch too much TV and a sexy seductress has big plans for her latest squeeze. Not for everyone, but I thought this was an absolute blast with a crass, trashy tone and some hilarious characters. Good effects for the budget, too, especially in the last story. A must for fellow fans of the terminally weird.

9: Seizure (1974) [Blu-ray] - it was great seeing this unsung gem finally get it's due on Blu-ray from Scorpion. Great transfer, too, with indoor scenes especially popping. Jonathan Frid stars as Edmund, a man who's nightmares about three unsettling individuals seem to be coming true. Oliver Stone assembled a great cast for this, his debut feature. Martine Beswick's Queen of Evil is especially memorable, and Mary Woronov never looked better. It's a bleak affair with nary an ounce of hope to be found right up to the zinger ending. It also has a very European flavor despite being shot in Canada. Still my favorite of Stone's films.

10: Octane (2003) [DVD] - while driving home, a mother and her teen daughter are targeted by a cult involved in several automobile "accidents". I was lucky to stumble across this little gem a few years back. It came on network TV late one night, quickly catching my interest with it's exceptionally shot visuals and moody score. Combining the road and conspiracy genres, it boasts an intriguing aura of mystery throughout and style to spare. The bits in the various truck stops make for the best scenes of the film, particularly those involving a sinister motivational speaker, though there's also fun to be had as certain characters party in a diesel's empty tanker trailer. The film only flounders somewhat with a weak conclusion, but, overall, it's a hypnotic excursion that I've re-watched several times.

October 5th

11: Whodunit (1982) [VHS] - a movie is being filmed on a deserted island, but someone starts picking off the cast and crew. Whodunit?! Also known as Island of Blood and Scared Alive, this slasher has touches of both tongue-in-cheek humor and underlying viciousness. The latter is evident in some of the kills and an interesting ending, which is actually a bit ahead of it's time. The former presents itself in the form of quirky characters and intentionally amusing dialogue. We also get several variations of a certain song used by the killer whenever a murder occurs, which I'm sure would prove a little maddening to some. I think it adds to the charm. While I liked the final girl, I do wish my favorite character, who meets her demise in the shower, had at least made it to the end. The narration in the following trailer always gives me a laugh.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/JvIcQgMYsiw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

October 6th

12: Death Spa (1989) [Blu-ray] - what a difference a year makes. I watched this for the first time during last year's challenge. That viewing was via Youtube, and little did I know that a Blu-ray would be out in time for the challenge's return. I liked this more this time around, even if it still feels more like a series of random set-pieces thrown together rather than a complete film. The lead character is a douche, so I root for the ghost, played with charismatic glee by the always reliable Shari Shattuck. Ken Foree has a small role, there are some good death scenes and the set design is pure 80's. The crazed Killer Workout remains my preferred spa horror flick, but this is plenty enjoyable.

13: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) - this was initially my least favorite of it's respective series. The absurd sewer climax complete with Jason, horrible make-up and all, shouting "Mommy, please don't let me drown!", the moron who claims "This voyage is doomed!", yet decided to come along anyway, weak kills and various other bits of inanity saw to that. While I still find these issues grating, the movie is helped considerably by having my favorite final girl of the series in Jensen Daggett. As such, I would now rank this one above Jason Lives, and I'd definitely rather watch it than Freddy vs. Jason or the remake. I wish Daggett had been in one of the better entries, but at least I've softened my stance on this to the point of being able to revisit it.

14: Curse II: The Bite (1989) [DVD] - a couple driving through the desert take an ill-advised shortcut which leads to the boyfriend getting bitten by a radioactive snake. It isn't long before he starts going through drastic physical changes. This is a fantastic little nasty starring one of my favorite scream queens, Jill Schoelen. The snake and gore effects by Screaming Mad George are really quite remarkable, graphic stuff that really gets skin-crawling during the climax. This is the best of the unrelated Curse series. I first saw it on local Channel 27 when you never knew what they'd show overnight. The days before infomercials, they're sorely missed.

15: End of the Line (2007) [DVD] - several members of a large religious cult simultaneously receive notice via pagers that it's Judgment Day. This gives them the go ahead to bring out their special daggers and "save" all the non-believers by way of murder. Maurice Devereaux's overlooked gem possesses the kind of raw ambition that reminds me of why I love horror in the first place. It's an original and highly imaginative effort. There are many underlying hints as to what's truly going on in the film, little things that don't beat you over the head, but really enrich the viewing experience. After ending on a particularly strong note, the strength of the finale is carried over into the end credits thanks to the eerily beautiful song which plays over them.

October 8th

16: The Boy Who Cried Werewolf (1973) [Youtube] - a boy becomes convinced that his father, bitten during an attack in the woods, is now a werewolf, but who will believe him? Never released on home video for some reason, this isn't the easiest film to come by. That's a shame, as it's quite underrated. The story of a boy continuously left alone with his dad despite his pleas, helpless to convince his mother that it could mean life or death for him, makes for some solid tension. This was only my second ever viewing, and it'd be nice if this would finally get a proper release. Also, the couple in the camping trailer didn't deserve their fate.

October 9th

17: Highway to Hell (1991) [VHS] - when his fiancee is kidnapped and taken to Hell, a guy, along with his dog, heads out to save her. A long-time favorite of mine, this is a charming and imaginative horror comedy that never gets old. I love the bizarro vision of Hell on display here, and it's always a big plus seeing Pamela Gidley and Kristy Swanson in anything. CJ Graham, who's take on Jason from Friday the 13th Part VI I didn't much care for, is menacing as Hellcop. Lots of cameos from random comedians add to the offbeat nature. Either Kino or Arrow needs to rescue this from MGM's vaults.

October 10th

18: Satan's Princess (1990) [Youtube] - searching for a missing girl leads a retired detective to Nicole St. James, the gorgeous owner of a modeling agency who harbors a demonic secret. Bert I. Gordon once again moves away from the giant monsters for this low-budget affair, and the result is, as before, far more interesting. This is a fun, if occasionally cheesy combining of the detective genre with horror and sleazy sex thrillers. Robert Forster plays disgruntled better than just about anyone, and Lydie Denier is perfect for the part of sinister seductress. The climax (which I'd say Species owes a nod to) gets really silly and doesn't satisfy at all.

October 11th

19: Bad Moon (1996) [DVD] - I decided to go with this for today's theme because it was on the cover of the first Fangoria issue I ever bought. Despite being a lifelong horror fan, I never knew the magazine existed until I stumbled across it in Wal-Mart of all places. Getting an eyeful of the awesome werewolf design, there was no chance I'd be leaving without the magazine, and seeing the movie was a must. Once I did get around to seeing this, I wasn't disappointed. As a dog lover, the loyal pooch versus werewolf story is right up my alley. I also bought every Fango for about the next ten years.

20: Mysterious Two (1982) [VHS] - this is a virtually unknown, but truly fascinating gem inspired by the Heaven's Gate cult. From Gary Sherman, this has an unsettling mood similar to that of the director's Dead & Buried. Eerie and prophetic, it's still one of the best television films I've ever seen. Robert Englund has a decent-sized role as a sheriff's deputy. Very highly recommended. Unfortunately, it seems to be the forgotten jewel of Sherman's filmography, which is already somewhat overlooked to begin with. Out on a cheapo DVD, but deserves better. A Blu-ray would be divine.

October 12th

21: House of Death (1982) [VHS] - aka Death Screams, this is bursting at the seams with fantastic summer in a small town atmosphere. It takes a while to get to the bulk of the killings, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest, as I love the settings, including a county fair/carnival, and the various antics of the characters. It gives the characters room to breathe, which is the same reason Final Exam is one of my favorites despite many people claiming "nothing ever happens". In fact, it sort of mirrors Final Exam with a similar opening of an unsuspecting couple being slaughtered. It also has one of the more unintentionally amusing sheriff characters in a slasher, and the lead girl is a real beauty.

22: Graveyard Shift (1990) [DVD] - generally considered one of the weaker King adaptations, I don't subscribe to the consensus. With grimy characters and an oppressive workplace environment, it gives off an unpleasant vibe. Some will find that off-putting, but it's a plus in my book, as I like my horror bleak and ugly. As the action moves lower and lower into the bowels of the mill, you really do feel that the group is descending into Hell. Brad Dourif gets a small, but juicy role as an exterminator, and Stephen Macht's accent deserves it's own billing. More of the sultry Ilona Margolis would have been nice.

October 13th

23: The Final Terror (1983) [VHS] - I was excited to find a used VHS of this for sale several years back, as I had wanted to see it for quite some time. Upon watching it, I wasn't impressed. I figured the challenge would be perfect to finally revisit it. Alas, my feelings haven't changed. Excluding Pantoliano's outcast, the characters are all interchangeable, completely unlikable jerks, and not enough of them die. A slasher that combines a low body count with characters you yearn to see killed? Unforgivable. Some of the traps are cool, but otherwise, there's just nothing here. Notable only for the future names involved, though I can't imagine any of them being proud of this stinker.

October 14th

24: Further than Fear (1980) [4shared] - vicious bikers and the couple they've taken hostage are cursed after leaving an old witch to die. This surreal shocker from Spain is one wild ride, a brazen blend of hallucinations, the skeletal undead, incest and even a masturbatory sermon. Set primarily in and around the ruins of an ancient church, a place which provides an effectively uneasy ambiance. The bikers are real dirt bags, foul-mouthed and vile to their inner most cores. Basically, the types revenge stories were made for. This is in dire need of a loving restoration. Immediately. It's totally off it's rocker, and I love every minute.

25: Red Spirit Lake (1993) [Youtube] - a girl inherits the land of her dead aunt, a witch murdered by people who want the land's hidden secrets for themselves. Strange shot on video production plays like an art film on acid. The acting is quite poor, the characters being a mixture of laughably absurd and downright unpleasant, while what little story there is makes hardly any sense. On the other hand, the visuals, editing and music lend it an otherworldy vibe that I dug. Not good by any means, but worth a look for adventurous viewers.

October 15th

26: Calamity of Snakes (1983) [Youtube] - completely insane Hong Kong exploitation about an apartment complex suffering from a snake curse after the developer exterminates a large nest of them rather than delay construction. I watched this for the first time last year and told a friend about it, so tonight was the night I finally showed it to him. One of the most outrageous, bat shit movies ever. Thousands of real snakes swarming the complex is truly a sight to behold, but even that doesn't compare to the lengthy fight scene between a "snake master" and a giant boa. A horde of mongoose (or is it mongeese, mongooses?) even gets in on the action at one point. Being a Hong Kong film, there were no qualms about slaughtering tons of snakes for real while shooting this, so beware.

October 16th

27: Nightmares (1983) [DVD] - great little anthology featuring four stories that were originally intended for the old Darkroom TV series. Starring the stunning Cristina Raines of The Sentinel fame, Terror in Topanga is a short and sweet retelling of a popular urban legend. In the film's best segment, The Bishop of Battle, Emilio Estevez is a teen obsessed with beating a mysterious arcade game. An all around great story with the added bonus of nostalgia for any former arcade regular. A faithless priest is stalked by a truck from Hell in The Benediction. Like a mini version of The Car, it's fun for what it is. Night of the Rat is an overlong, dull tale about a giant rodent infesting a family's home. Let's just say they saved the worst for last.

October 17th

28: Enter the Devil (1972) [Youtube] - a laid back cop gets more than he bargained for while investigating a missing persons case in the New Mexico desert. This perfect drive-in fare opens with a bang as an unsuspecting motorist has his tire shot out and is then picked up by the shooter for an unenviable fate. It sets an ominous tone for what's ahead, though things slow down considerably from there as the assigned trooper sets up shop at a remote desert hunting lodge. I love a good desert atmosphere, and this film's is as lonely as ever. There's a nagging sense of unease permeating throughout the quieter moments. Things take a surprising turn a little more than midway through with an unexpected plot twist and gruesome burning at the stake sequence. Astute viewers, however, will see the ending coming long before the final reel.

29: The Night Brings Charlie (1990) [Youtube] - bottom of the barrel slasher. I wouldn't be surprised if a casting call was sent out specifically asking for dummies, as the acting is the epitome of wooden. Most of the kills are off screen, but you better believe we get a good look at a Pepsi can, oddly out of place during a shower scene. They can't even get their product placement right. There's also a "comic relief" secretary who is one of the most grating wastes of celluloid I've had the displeasure of witnessing. If the movie is notable for anything, it's the inane plot developments in the latter half. Truly idiotic stuff, which gave me all the comedy I needed, in turn doing the impossible and rendering that damned secretary even more worthless. The whole thing reminded me of Hack-O-Lantern in it's ridiculous tone. That's another one that felt the need to throw in a pointless comedy character, in it's case, one who randomly stopped the movie dead in it's tracks for several minutes.

October 18th

30: Demented (1980) [VHS] - a woman, hanging by a thread mentally after being gang raped, is pushed over the edge when neighborhood teens pull a prank on her. This is another one that I feel gets a lot of undeserved hate. Sallee Elyse isn't a good actress, but she has an odd appeal to her, and it's fun seeing her let loose on the young punks who messed with the wrong person. Good ending, too, with another satisfying dose of revenge implied. The incredible melting man himself, Alex Rebar, wrote the screenplay.

October 19th

31:The House of the Blue Shadows (1986) [Internet torrent] - Luca's girlfriend accompanies him to his childhood home for a weekend getaway. However, he has a sordid history with the house and the neighbors who are still lurking about, a history which comes back to haunt him. This inexplicably neglected piece of pensive horror is not so much a giallo as it is a haunting mood piece along the lines of Footprints on the Moon. It's a quietly unsettling film with some disturbing subtext layered underneath an ominous atmosphere of suffocating dread. Amanda Sandrelli is lovely, but I fail to grasp what her character sees in Luca, who is an unappealing mixture of whiny and unbalanced. In the end, the proceedings are surprisingly poignant. Bonus points for inspired use of the Onibaba mask, always an alarming sight.

32: The Town that Dreaded Sundown (2014) [Amazon Instant] - the original film was a staple of my childhood, as my father told me stories of when he saw it and of the true events it's based on. I didn't expect much from this newfangled addition to the story and mainly watched for Addison Timlin, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find it an unflinching and moody effort with a great time out of place quality. It's beautifully shot, too, with an Italian-esque emphasis on color. The climax is where things go wrong, reminding me of the overly explanatory ridiculousness of the Sorority Row remake's reveal. Still, it wasn't enough to ruin the film for me, and I look forward to buying it on Blu-ray.

October 20th

33: Vampires: Los Muertos (2002) [DVR recording/Sony Movie Channel] - poor sequel to the John Carpenter film. I mainly wanted to see this due to the presence of Arly Jover, who left quite an impression as a vixen vamp in Blade. It's nice seeing her again, but nothing else here works, least of all a horribly edited slaughter sequence in a remote, but crowded diner. Not sure what was up with Natasha Gregson Wagner's wooden performance either, as she's been decent enough in other roles I've seen her in. I expected more from a Tommy Lee Wallace film.

October 21st

34: Beyond the Door III (1989) [DVD] - third entry in the series of films that have nothing to do with each other. It's quite bad with some truly lousy gore scenes. The deaths themselves are creative enough, but the effects are terrible, several of them using obvious dummy heads. The characters are also an unlikable bunch who treat the lead poorly. They also never seem to much care when something supernatural happens. One guy kisses his possessed girlfriend and gets a mouth full of maggots in the process. The girl then proceeds to rip her face off and the guy never mentions it as if it didn't happen. We also get some hilarious scenes of a train going off the rails, all done with very bad miniature work. This one's for those who like to laugh at bad movies. Anyone else should avoid.

35: Destroyer (1988) [Youtube] - before there was Shocker and The Horror Show, there was this forgotten little flick. While I enjoyed it more than the two aforementioned efforts, it still failed to rise above the mediocre. It does have a nice cast, including genre favorites, Anthony Perkins and Deborah Foreman. Lyle Alzaldo is good as the muscle-bound psycho who was sent to the electric chair, but came away with only a buzz. The prison setting is also nice. However, I thought the prison janitor's role in the action could have been scrapped. There's a group massacre that unfortunately takes place off camera, and one character's survival in the end made me roll my eyes. Decent fun, nothing more.

October 22nd

36: The Night God Screamed (1971) [VHS] - a big favorite of mine, this bleak obscurity boasts an oppressive atmosphere and a terrific performance from Michael Sugich as a murderous religious fanatic who commands his own cult, claiming to be of Jesus, but leaning much more towards Manson. My only complaint is that his character winds up being far too underutilized, as the film switches focus midway through. That aside, this is outstanding stuff truly deserving of a proper release sooner rather than later. And, of course, what a wonderfully memorable title.

October 23rd

37: Lisa and the Devil (1973) [Blu-ray] - easily Mario Bava's crowning achievement if you ask me. It's very surreal and Lovecraftian in it's approach, and the whole thing works beautifully. I admit to being underwhelmed by some of the popular Bavas I've seen, such as Blood and Black Lace and Twitch of the Death Nerve, but this one is as solid as they come. Along with Planet of the Vampires, it also possesses the most bedazzling photography of Bava's oeuvre. The House of Exorcism version is better off avoided unless absolutely too curious for your own good.

October 24th

38: Zombie Nightmare (1987) [Youtube] - teenage Tony, killed in a hit and run, is brought back as an undead avenger. Idiocy abounds in this zero budget opus. While somewhat amusing, it isn't one of the better bad movies I've seen, as much of this nonsense is just annoying, chiefly the voodoo priestess character. Once zombified, Tony (played by Thor of Rock 'N Roll Nightmare fame) amounts to what's probably the least intimidating zombie you're going to find. Then there's the leader of the gang that hit him. He has a pathetic hairstyle, absurd dialogue and a laughable fight with his mother. Sort of a big step in the other direction when he becomes an attempted rapist to boot. I was surprised to see a young Tia Carrere in this. Apparently a MST3K favorite, but I've never cared for that show.

October 25th

39: Don't Go in the Woods (1981) [DVD] - I used to see this all the time at the various video stores around town. For whatever reason, I never did wind up renting it, and my first viewing came by way of blind buying the DVD. I found it somewhat enjoyable on a bad level, but, as was the case with Zombie Nightmare, it was nowhere near the awesomely bad experience it had been hyped up to be. This was only my sophomore viewing, and my views have pretty much remained the same. Some amusing moments here and there, but just a bit of a bore overall.

40: The Hills Have Eyes (1977) [DVD] - still Wes Craven's best film all these years later, and a great example of budget horror film-making. It's just an overall gem of a film with unique villains, a terrific setting and a nice dose of commentary on human nature. As a dog lover, I appreciate the German shepherd being portrayed as the real hero of the picture. This is also the film that led to my crush on Dee Wallace Stone back in the day. Aja's abysmal remake doesn't come close to matching the original's quality. Oddly, I do like the sequel to the remake, though.

October 26th

41: Too Scared to Scream (1985) [Amazon Instant] - tenants of a NYC apartment building are being murdered. Could the culprit be the eccentric night doorman? Filmed in 1982, but not released until '85. I'd been curious about this one for a while, as it has quite the cast and is the only feature directed by actor, Tony Lo Bianco. Being a huge slasher fan, I've pretty much exhausted the field, so it's nice to know there are still some gems left to uncover. This one actually puts forth more of a giallo vibe, mixing the slashing with plenty of investigation, mystery and police work. The outlandish climax also feels straight out of the giallo handbook. Ian McShane gives a strong performance as chief suspect, Vincent, an obviously pained individual. He really helps elevate the film. Anne Archer, on the other hand, brings plenty of cheese to the table. Her stretching routine in the park is pure gold.

42: Blacker than the Night (1975) [Youtube] - a very impressive ghost story from renowned Mexican filmmaker, Carlos Enrique Taboada. A young woman inherits the mansion of her deceased aunt, the only condition being that she take care of the beloved cat left behind. After moving in, along with three of her friends, things take a dark turn. This is an elegant slow-burner, creating an enormous amount of tension through anticipation. It's a classical style that works like a charm. I've always said that with Mexican horror, at the very least you're guaranteed an entrancing sense of atmosphere every time. Boy, does this thing have atmosphere in spades! The exquisite mansion setting, absolutely perfect for an old, dark house tale, sees to that. And it's just one of it's qualities among many. I'd have zero hesitance placing this among the acknowledged classics of the haunting/ghost sub-genre. I saw that it was remade recently. No thanks.

October 27th

43: V/H/S: Viral (2014) [Amazon Instant] - I seem to be one of the few who was disappointed with V/H/S 2. I greatly preferred the first one, though it too was far from perfect. Sitting down with this third entry, I was hoping for a return to form. Dante the Great tackles a promising premise, but loses itself with an overly campy climax that goes into what I like to call "stuporhero" territory. Plus, abandoning the found footage approach was ill-advised, and the assistant girl's acting was awful. Segment #2, Parallel Monsters, was my favorite of the lot. I would expect no less from the director of Timecrimes. It's a darkly comedic take on alternate dimensions, also rather creepy in it's build as you question what exactly is going on. Bonestorm gets a lot of hate, but I had a good time with it. The characters weren't as annoying as I'd heard, and I'm a sucker for horror involving skeletal figures. Finally, the wrap-around segments were just strange. Not quite the return to form I wanted, but not the disaster I've seen it described as either.

44: Demon Wind (1990) [DVD] - I was always drawn to the memorable lenticular VHS cover when I saw this at the rental store, but I never got around to actually renting it due to procrastination. Same thing happened with The Dead Pit, though when I finally checked that one out on DVD, it was a stinker. I finally caught up with this one during last year's challenge and, fortunately, it was far better. A mixture of Evil Dead and Demons about a group of teens encountering demonic forces at a desolate farm, this is a blast to watch. It's got it's share of cheesy moments, so I'd rank it more on the level of a Night of the Demons, though I enjoyed this more than I did the first movie in that series. Some of the dialogue makes me crack up just thinking about it. One qualm is I feel that the demons act too much like zombies at certain points.

October 28th

45: Savage Weekend (1979) [VHS] - rich city types visiting upstate New York are stalked by a killer. I held off on watching this for a long time because I wanted to get a hold of the uncut version. I can't say it was worth the wait. It's all rather dull with a bunch of bland assholes doing nothing of note as we wait and wait for anything interesting to happen. One of the main reasons for this group's weekend excursion is to see a boat being constructed. Yep, these folks are the life of the party. Things pick up ever so slightly when the killings start, though by then, it's too late. It doesn't help that the killer's identity is about as telegraphed as you can get. I'm all for deliberately paced horror, but it doesn't work when your characters define tedium. Honestly, the only thing that really livens the film up is the presence of the always reliable David Gale as a sweaty farmer. His sexual tension with the female lead makes for an interesting dynamic, and he's involved in an exciting fight scene involving a chainsaw.

October 29th

46: The Cellar (1989) [Youtube] - an evil spirit brought forth by an old Indian curse plagues the family that has moved into it's place of residence. This is an oddly directed creature feature, perhaps partially due to Kevin S. Tenney taking over directing duties early on after the original director quit. Lots of TV style fade-outs and weird scene transitions. I loved the Arizona desert locales, and the creature effects aren't too shabby, even if it looks more like a cross between a werewolf and the Chattering Beast from Hellraiser Bloodline than an all powerful evil spirit. There's a peculiar scene of Patrick Kilpatrick's character just going full blown mental on his wife and son, becoming downright abusive. I definitely felt the both of them were way too forgiving of him following that outburst, and it was a curious choice for a character we're supposed to be rooting for. The animosity towards the Indian attempting to help them was also unwarranted, and they didn't even notice when he was gone.

47: My Friends Need Killing (1976) [Youtube] - raw and nihilistic psychodrama about an anguished Vietnam vet who, haunted by memories of wartime atrocities, is compelled to track down and kill the men he served with. This isn't pleasant stuff. While talky, relatively short and not overly graphic, it makes for a grueling watch that leaves you feeling as if you've been put through the wringer. There's a grim intensity here, enhanced by the zero budget, almost claustrophobic nature. The build during the reunion scenes actually becomes tough to bare, as you know what's coming. The most effective sequence is when the psycho involves one of his former comrade's innocent wife in the brutality. All in all, this one isn't easily forgotten. Hard to believe it's from the director of A*P*E.

October 30th

48: Exists (2014) [Amazon Instant] - the Orca of Bigfoot movies. Since going their separate ways, Eduardo Sánchez has definitely been the more impressive of the former Blair Witch duo. While his best solo effort remains Altered, this was a lot of fun. The characters are aggravating, though they become more tolerable as the film wears on. Sánchez keeps the action moving at a nice clip and makes the situation feel pretty hopeless. I also liked the straightforward monster on the loose approach. Nothing wrong with simplicity. Of the two found footage Bigfoot flicks released this year, I actually prefer Willow Creek, but this one is also worthwhile.

49: Goodnight, God Bless (1987) [Youtube] - a killer clad in priestly garb is terrorizing the streets of London. I have to say, this film boasts what is unquestionably one of the most jolting opening scenes I've ever witnessed. The killer, face unseen, strolls into a schoolyard and, after knifing an unsuspecting teacher, proceeds to whip out a pistol and blow away several kids. Definitely unexpected, the editing and somber score adding to the scene's potency. Had the rest of the picture lived up to the opening, I dare say this would be a classic. Unfortunately, it stumbles from there, spending too much time with a detective romancing one of the surviving kids' mother. This rather unlikely relationship bogs things down considerably, though the film bursts to life again with eerie intervals of the murderer doing his thing. And the bits involving the killer are eerie. It's a shame we see so little of him in favor of cheesy romance. I'd seen parts of this on TV once before, but this was my first viewing of the film in it's entirety. Weird ending.
