Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
Birthdays today include Nixon, Bob Denver, JK Simmons, Jimmy Page. It's also St Stephen's Day if you want to watch something about martyrdom.

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
I'm not participating, but I was auditing my Letterboxd lists and forgot that I had created one (Calendar in Film) of movies whose titles correspond with specific days. Thought it might of potential interest to those of you giving this challenge a go.

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
^ Very helpful, Travis. Thanks! I've given some thought about planning ahead, but have been winging it so far. I usually sit down at some point late in the evening and start looking at the next day and what event, birthday or anniversary coordinates with something in my unwatched pile.
Tonight, I'll watch an episode of Happy Days. It premiered 40 years ago today. |
Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
2/2 is Super Bowl Sunday: The Sum of All Fears, Black Sunday, etc.

Though I haven't watched anything yet, I'm still considering taking part off and on.

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
I don't think any of the following are about the Super Bowl per se, but they are about football and also qualify for the Academy Award Challenge.
The Blind Side (2009) nominated for Best Film and Best Actress (won) Crazylegs (1953) nominated for Best Editing Good News (1947) nominated for Best Song Heaven Can Wait (1978) nominated for 9 awards; won for Best Art/Set Direction How to Play Football (1944) nominated for Best Animated Short The Longest Yard (1974) nominated for Best Editing Pigskin Parade (1936) nominated for Best Supporting Actor Undefeated (2011) nominated for Best Documentary (won) |

And if you're not a fan of football, there's always Groundhog Day or some other groundhog-centric flick. :)

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
Plan on watching Challenger today with it being the 28th anniversary of that tragedy.

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
I'm out! I had hoped if I stuck to sitcoms and shorts I could squeeze something in each day and maybe last the whole year. I fell woefully short.

^ lol
I'm still hooked on the novelty of this Challenge, and keeping it fairly light with mostly 30 minute episodes. I'm sure I'll forget about it and miss a midnight deadline eventually, but I'm at 100% so far. |
Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
Perhaps you can still jump back in from time to time. So far, I've managed to find something each day that fits. There is absolutely no way I can do the entire year. Too many times over the next 11 months that I'll be on the road and/or away from home to make it work.

Shorts, sitcoms, or even just short clips on YouTube? Don't let me be the only one. Please.
It's not been too difficult this month. The brutal weather has eliminated the desire for much outdoor activity. In some ways, this challenge is easier than any of the monthly ones since it's not about watching tons of stuff, but rather one item, which doesn't even have to be feature-film length, as you mentioned. |
Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
Since my main focus has been on unwatched material from my media pile/DVR, I don't know if I'll check it out, but The Social Network would be a perfect fit tomorrow since Facebook will be celebrating 10 years since Mark Zuckerberg founded it.

Bump for no particular reason. Still 100%, but I figure it'll slip my mind one of these days soon enough.

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
I've been continuing with the TV on DVD Challenge and have so far watched 38 additional TV episodes this month. Plus one Hong Kong film for Chinese New Year. None nominated for an Oscar, though.

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
I finally had my first hiccup last week and didn't watch anything applicable for the day. After a long day with little free time, I found myself in bed about 11:30. For a brief moment, I remembered this challenge. I envisioned the following conversation with my wife.
Me: I have to get up and go watch something Peanuts-related. Her: What? Why? Me: Charles Schultz died on this day 14 years ago and it's almost midnight. Her: Huh? I just couldn't do it. Then I took the next day off as well. |

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
A lot of good birthday choices today: David Niven, Harry Carey, Harry Belafonte, Robert Conrad, Dirk Benedict, Ron Howard, Tim Daly, Javier Bardem

Re: DVDTalk's First Annual Challenge - 2014
I applaud you all for keeping up w/ it... I couldn't even track a weekly version of it. Not sure how you all do the monthly challenges all the time. Good luck to everyone who can keep up w/ it though.
