A Christmas Story Versions

I'm looking to pick up A Christmas Story. I find what seem to be two good versions.

http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Stor...hristmas+story

http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Stor...hristmas+story

Aside from the cover, these two versions appear to be very much the same. Are there any differences at all ? I could get the blu-ray, but it doesn't seem to have all the bonus features....

I *want* to think I've heard of this site before but nothing seems to link to it. I'm always looking for comparisons with DVD editions and this should be a big help. Thanks!

I'm surprised there are only US and UK versions. I though there would have been more international editions.

Christmas Story:  30th Anniversary [Blu-ray] (2013)

Extras: Being able to access an HD digital version is a plus, and the BD includes a new featurette entitled "Christmas in Ohio: A Christmas Story House," which runs 21:19 and features an all-growed-up Ian Petrella (aka Randy) and Brian Jones, founder of the "A Christmas Story House" in Cleveland. Also, the original recordings by Jean Shepherd that appeared on the 20th-anniversary DVD edition but were missing on the earlier BD have returned. What's still missing are the 20th-anniversary trivia & decoder ring extras from the DVD, which were sort of lame anyway. Watching some of the extras as the participants keep referring to the 20th anniversary of the film (the edition for which the extras were originally filmed) emphasizes how little updating was done for this 30th Anniversary BD Edition.

"Randy", "Scut Farkus", "Grover Dill", and "Flick" will be attending a Christmas Parade and cast screening in Tonawanda, NY this Saturday for the film's 30th anniversary.

The Jean Shepherd radio stuff was on the HD-DVD, but if you've got that there's a good chance it's rotted by now.

I really wish they would compare screenshots between all the different versions like some other sites do.

That would be great. Combine them with DVDBeaver and you'd really have something.

On the subject of this, what is the OAR? Is it open matte? Seeing all sorts of numbers in both the dvdcompare links and IMDB

I think the theatrical ratio was 1:85:1, but if you grew up watching it on cable, you were watching the open matte version.

It was *filmed* "open matte" with a intended projection ration of 1.85:1. Since it was filmed open matte all FS copies *should* be the full negative rather than a P&S conversion of the WS. At least with those you're not missing anything even though it's not presented as the director intended. Some argue that if a film is originally filmed "open matte" then that's how it should be viewed as you "see the entire frame". BUT you also see things that were never intended to be seen. I'll take a open matte presentation if that's all that's available but always prefer the intended projection ratio.

"Some" may have argued that around 1997, but that argument went out the window a long, long time ago.
