01. Code of Silence (1985)* (3 Pack Action)
Chuck Norris plays a Chicago police detective trying to stop a gang war while being ostracized by his fellow officers. Standard plot but a solid movie with well paced action scenes that leave you wanting more instead of going on so long they induce boredom. Very good supporting cast and lots of location work in Chicago. The plot and subplot are given some room to develop. The finale doesn't quite work for me, it's a bit too mechanical. Recommended.

02. M Squad (1957): The Golden Look* S:1 E:1 (M Squad The Complete Series)
A lean, lanky Lee Marvin plays Lt. Frank Ballinger, a member of the Chicago police department and M Squad, whose members can be assigned to any kind of case from fraud to homicide. Lots of narration by Marvin, a jazzy score, and a noirish look make for an interesting half hour show.
03. Ripper Street (2013): Tournament of Shadows* S:1 E:6 DVR from BBC America
Story of a police detective set in the late 1800's in the East End of London after the crimes of Jack the Ripper were over. Excellent period feel in the story of the death of a suspected anarchist and the political intrigue surrounding it.
March 03
04. M Squad (1957): The Watchdog* S:1 E:2 (M Squad The Complete Series)
The manhunt for a housebreaker intensifies when it is discovered that he was bit by a rabid dog.
March 04
05. Deadwood (2006): A Two-Headed Beast* S:3 E:5
March 05
06. Lethal Weapon 2 The Director's Cut (1989-orig)* (4 Film Favorites - Lethal Weapon)
Detectives Riggs and Murtaugh go after a gang that is laundering money from illegal drug sales. Mayhem follows. A step down from the first movie. There are too many action scenes at the expense of character moments and I found Joe Pesci's character more annoying than anything else. Some plot holes and action bordered on the silly and tended to pull me out of the story. On the other hand most of the action scenes are very well done and never go on too long and the movie is entertaining. Recommended if you can put your brain in neutral and just go with the flow.
07. Sea Hunt (1959): The Alcatraz Story S:2 E:1 (Sea Hunt Complete Season 2)
I found three seasons of Sea Hunt waiting for me when I got home and just couldn't resist trying one out. In this story, Mike gets involved with an attempted escape from Alcatraz. This show was an absolute favorite when I was a kid and for me anyway, it still holds up.
March 06
08. Secret of the Incas (1954)* Netflix streaming
Charlton Heston plays a ne're-do-well American working as a tour guide in Cuzco, Peru who obtains a clue to the location of the fabled Incan treasure, the Sunburst. The trail leads to the lost city of Machu Picchu and there to the tomb of the last Incan emperor. A very standard Hollywood adventure/romance with no surprises and almost no action. There are lots of location shots, some of which are quite magnificent, and some great tomb scenes which provide plenty of atmosphere. Also there are surprisingly jazzy songs by Yma Sumac, supposedly from the ancient Incas! Recommended especially if you are a fan of classic Hollywood movies.
09. The Berlin File (2013)* In theater
After an arms deal goes bad, a North Korean agent finds himself pursued by several organizations all of which mean him harm. Top notch Korean espionage/action movie. There are several very well done action scenes but time is also spent establishing characters, although some are strictly one dimensional, and setting up the web of relations between the characters and the organizations. The action packed finale may have a few too many action movie cliches but that's OK since it also has some new touches and the setup for the end has been very well done. Highly recommended except for those than can't stand subtitles.
March 07
10. Sea Hunt (1959): Operation Greenback* S:2 E:2 (Sea Hunt Complete Season 2)
Once again Mike is duped into helping with a criminal enterprise. Our hero is manly but gullible! Still a hugely entertaining show.
March 08
11. Sea Hunt (1959): Underwater Security* S:2 E:3 (Sea Hunt Complete Season 2)
Mike runs afoul of saboteurs whiles he's evaluating security for a coastal plant that produces highly explosive rocket fuel. A bit contrived but still pretty good.
March 09
12. Deadwood (2006): A Rich Find* S:3 E:6
13. Cry of the Innocent (1980)* (Mill Creek Suspense Classics 50 Movie Pack)
Rod Taylor plays a Vietnam vet seeking answers after his wife and children are killed when a sabotaged airplane crashes into the house they are staying in. Standard but fairly entertaining TV move relies too much on coincidences to move the plot along. Some of the acting is not that good. OK for a very slow afternoon or evening.
Picture: OK Sound: Very low, even when cranked up some dialog hard to hear
March 10
14. The People That Time Forgot (1977)
A man searches for his best friend who has been lost in a prehistoric land somewhere in the Arctic. Sequel to The Land That Time Forgot. Patrick Wayne makes a likeable, competent hero, the women are quite lovely, and the dinosaurs are good enough not to distract from the story in this classic lost world adventure. The Mountain of Skulls section is particularly good. Recommended for a heady dose of pulp action and adventure.
15. Deadwood (2006): Unauthorized Cinnamon* S:3 E:7
16. Foyle's War (2002): The German Woman* S:1 E:1
Set in England in 1940 a police detective searches for the killer of the German born wife of a local magistrate. Excellent production values with a strong sense of the time, the war is more than just background, its effects are everywhere but do not dominate the story. The mystery is also well done and the characters are well developed. Highly recommended.
17. M Squad (1957): The Neighborhood Killer* S:1 E:3 (M Squad The Complete Series)
Frank's on the trail of a cop killer who gunned down a patrolman who was calling in a routine robbery.
March 11
18. The One-Armed Swordsman (1967)*
A martial arts student loses his right arm and must develop a whole new style of martial arts in order to defend the people he cares for. An excellent movie with a strong plot and good action scenes but which also spends plenty of time on the main characters. There is a real distinction drawn between the real world and the martial arts world, something I haven't really noticed in later films of this type. Highly recommended.
19. Millionaire's Express (1986)*
Action/comedy involving a train full of rich people which various factions are trying to use for their own ends. Set in China but with a distinctly American Western flair. I got several good laughs during the film and just as I was on the edge of feeling things were getting too silly the heavy duty action finale kicked in and things were good again. Most of the fights and stunts are truly outstanding and the cast is full of excellent martial arts actors. Recommended.
March 12
20. Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (1978)*
A servant at a martial arts school befriends an old man who teaches him the snake-fist style of kung fu. Both are soon pursued by the powerful master of the eagle-claw style who wants to destroy all who know the snake-fist style. Classic kung fu movie with touches of humor that I usually found very amusing. Jackie Chan is charming and funny, especially some of his facial expressions. The story takes the time to develop the characters in the beginning and the fights are well done. Recommended.
March 13
21. The Killer (1989)
A hit-man, who is really a nice guy except for all that killing stuff, and a rather cold-hearted police detective oppose each other and the massed forces of the Triad. Lots of gun play (and none of it boring) but the story and characters have quite a bit of depth. Issues of honor, friendship, and love are explored and the three leads are excellent. There are moments in the film which are almost poetic. Yeah, its really that good. Highly recommended.
March 14
22. Goodfellas (1990)*
The story of the rise and fall of a member of organized crime, based on a true story. I always enjoy gangster movies that span decades and this was no exception. There are few real surprises in the story, but a good script, fine actors (especially Ray Liotta) and direction maintain interest even though its a fairly long film. It's not really that different from the classic gangster films of the 30's and 40's, just modernized a bit. Recommended.
March 15
23. Broken Oath (1977)*
The daughter of a slain general seeks revenge on the four men who killed her father and sent her mother to prison. The characters are not particularly well developed but the plot is full of intrigue and the action is great with lots of cool weapons and tricks which add spice to the proceedings. Each fight is more interesting than the last and the final battle literally had me on the edge of my seat. Angela Mao is a lively, lovely and likeable heroine. All this and scorpion-fu too! Highly recommended.
March 16
24. Lupin the 3rd The Movie: The Secret of Mamo (1978)*
Lupin the 3rd, descendant of master thief Arsene Lupin, and his crew run afoul of the god-like Mamo who is searching for the treasure of immortality. Fast moving and exciting story begins to feel more like a James Bond adventure than the Lupin the 3rd I'm familiar with from the TV shows. Parts are quite surreal and it turns into sf territory at the end. Still, its all very entertaining. Recommended but perhaps not as your first taste of Lupin.
25. Police Story III: Super Cop (1992)*
A Hong Kong cop and a Chinese security officer go undercover to track down the head of a major drug ring. A fun filled, action packed movie. Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh make a great team. Plot and character development are minimal but the variety of action is amazing including martial arts, gun fights, explosions, various vehicular chases, and some great stunts on top of a moving train. Highly recommended.
26. King Boxer (1972)*
A martial arts school uses underhanded tactics against other schools to assure victory in an upcoming regional tournament. No shortage of action but there is more depth in story and characters than we tend to see later. There is also a significant degree of gore including eyeball gouging, blood spurting, and head severing. I can see why this movie was such a sensation when released in the US. Recommended.
March 17
27. Arrow (2013): Dodger* S:1 E:15 VHS taped off TV
28. Arrow (2013): Dead to Rights* S:1 E:16 VHS taped off TV
One of the few current TV shows I follow, based on the DC comic book character Green Arrow. Good action scenes, stories and cast. There are some long term story arcs going on, including an origin story. There are also some interesting takes on other DC characters. Not the best show ever, but always entertaining.
29. Foyle's War (2002): The White Feather* S:1 E:2
Another excellent show with the mystery of a murdered hotel owner sometimes taking a back seat to intrigue involving British pro-Nazi sympathizers and the Dunkirk evacuation. Totally absorbing.
March 18
30. Mean Streets (1973)*
The story of two childhood friends, one unreliable and quick to anger and the other just starting to work his way up in the local mob trying to survive in Little Italy, NYC. Shot on location and well acted but I had trouble really getting into the story and couldn't really sympathize with any of the characters. Maybe De Niro was just a bit too off the wall as Johnny Boy.
March 19
31. Death Wish 3 (1985)*
Charles Bronson is back to take on a new breed of psycho-thugs on the streets of New York. Throw out any logic, common sense, or even basic intelligence. Everybody in this movie does stupid things. Chuck saves a neighborhood by letting half the people die and leaving most of the buildings as smoldering ruins. Still, I kind of liked this one if only for the tons of well paced mindless action. Recommended but check your brain at the door.
32. Passenger 57 (1992)* (4 Film Favorites Extreme Action)
Part 2 of my brain dead double feature has Wesley Snipes as the new head of airline security trying to stop a hijacking by the world's most dangerous psycho-terrorist. Insanely improbably and utterly predictable but a huge amount of fun. The film moves along nicely and nothing overstays its welcome. Short, sweet, and satisfying just the way I like them. Park your brain and enjoy.
March 20
33. Tarzan Escapes (1936)* (The Tarzan Collection)
Some of Jane's relatives are searching for her because of an inheritance but the safari guide has plans to capture Tarzan and put him on display. Pretty good Tarzan movie with well used stock footage and just enough of Cheeta. I hate it when there's too damn much Cheeta! There's also a jungle tree house with appliances straight out of the Flintstones and a really cool swamp filled with flesh eating lizards. Enjoyable.
March 21
34. M Squad (1957): Pete Loves Mary* S:1 E:4 (M Squad The Complete Series)
OK episode about an escaped prisoner but a great cast. Mike Conners plays the escapee and Paul Birch and DeForest Kelley play police officers -- I recognized Kelley's voice since the scene was too dark to really make out his face. Don Rickles was also listed at the end of the cast credits but I'll be darned if I know who he played.
35. Arrow (2013): The Huntress Returns* S:1 E:17 VHS taped off TV
March 22
36. Deadwood (2006): Leviathan Smiles* S:3 E:8
37. The Sniper (1952)* (Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics I)
A sniper who only targets women is terrorizing San Francisco. Personal fav Arthur Franz is very good bringing life to the deeply disturbed killer and the large amount of location shooting in SF is very effective with hills and angles put to good use. The good guys aren't quite as well done; the atmosphere is often destroyed when we cut to the police efforts. There are two big miscues in the movie: a jokey lineup with a peeper, a letter writer, and a rapist and a police meeting with prominent citizens with its lecture by the police psychologist. The film never quite recovers although it does finish well. Recommended for Franz's performance.
March 23
38. The Big Heat (1953)* (Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics I)
A police detective takes on the local syndicate and his own corrupt department at great personal risk. Glenn Ford heads a great cast in this well written and directed story. Totally absorbing and highly recommended.
39. Ultraman (1967) Episode 30: "The Phantom Snow Mountain"*
A snow monster, much like a giant yeti, is spotted around a newly opened ski resort. The Science Patrol is called to investigate. Kind of an unusual resolution. The Science Patrol, armed with the most advanced vehicles and weapons, is Earth's first line of defense against the many monsters that threaten it. One of its members is can secretly summon Ultraman.
40. Ultraman (1967) Episode 31: "Who Has Arrived?"*
A Science Patrol member who spend 20 years in South America returns to Tokyo but all is not what it seems. Very good episode. The monster may not look all that great but the build up is good and there are some neat ideas tossed around.
41. Kamen Rider V3 (1973) Episode 12: "Junko Becomes A Mutant's Bride?!"*
V3 must battle Pickaxe-Shark and then Drill-Mole in order to save female friend from a fate worse than death. The actor who played the captain of the Tokyo Science Patrol in Ultraman also appears in this series as V3's mentor.
42. 5 Against the House (1955)* (Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics I)
A law student comes up with a plan to rob a casino in Reno and wants his friends to help him do it just as a prank. A mediocre cast can't help this mediocre story. Brian Keith is good and Kim Novak smolders but the rest of the cast are bland. The plan itself is pretty lame. I understand the core of the story is the Brian Keith-Guy Madison relationship but still....
43. Deadwood (2006): Amateur Night* S:3 E:9
March 24
44. Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)* (Lion's Gate 4 Film Collection)
Rambo is released from prison so he can go on a mission to get proof that there are still American POW's in Vietnam. The action stuff is OK but not outstanding, it takes the concept of a one man army to new heights. The dialog and story are often simply awful, although the acting, except for Stallone, is usually adequate. Overall, laughably bad.
45. Return of the One-Armed Swordsman (1968)*
Eight bandits, each skilled in a different fighting style and weapon, try to take over the sword clans of the martial arts world. Not nearly as good as the original. There are more fights but less heart. Still, the action is pretty well done although only one of the eight gives our hero much of a challenge. Quite a few large group melees.
46. Deadwood (2006): A Constant Throb* S:3 E:10
47. Foyle's War (2002): A Lesson In Murder* S:1 E:3
Again the mystery, although a classic theme, grows out of situations caused by the war. This show keeps getting better and better.
48. Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1991) Ep. 312 "Gamera vs Guiron"
Joel and the bots take on kaiju silliness. Good riffing and host segments.
March 25
49. The Lineup (1958)* (Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics I)
Neat film about the San Francisco police department tracking down a narcotics ring that tricks innocent tourists into bringing the drugs through customs. Good cast with the baddies especially interesting and well done. Based on a TV show (The Lineup aka San Francisco Beat) which I remember watching as a kid. Each side makes tactical errors near the end which lead to an exciting and satisfying conclusion. Recommended.
March 26
50. Where Eagles Dare (1968)* (4 Film Favorites War Heroes Collection)
During WW2 a select group of agents is sent to rescue an American general who is being held in an almost impenetrable castle high in the Alps. Some magnificent scenery in a pretty good movie with a few major problems. Some of the action gets repetitious by the last half hour and part of the time spent on thousands of Nazi soldiers being gunned down could have been used on setting up the plot twists better. Also, although Richard Burton does a good job in the acting department I really had a hard time seeing him as an action hero.
March 27
51. The Sentimental Swordsman (1977)*
A wandering swordsman returns after hearing that his old foe, The Plum Blossom Bandit, is back in action but everyone seems to be out to get the swordsman. A very good movie with wonderful, lush sets and well done fights. The final battle is particularly exciting. The story is also good with several nicely drawn characters. These tales of the martial world, often based on novels by Gu Long as this one was, can be confusing (for me at least) with convoluted plots and many odd characters dropping in and out of the story. This one has its fair share of quirky personalities (one of my favorites is Five Poison Kid) but the plot is relatively straightforward, although is does have its twists and turns. The martial world is indeed a strange and amazing place! Recommended.
