The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2013

2nd Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge

Dates: Sunset on February 28th to sunrise on April 1st (What you watch from dusk on March 30th to dawn on April 1st could also count for the annual April B-Movie/Exploitation Challenge, so plan your choices accordingly if desired.)

Rules: Sorta like all the other Challenges but as lenient as you can imagine. Everything counts as one: film, TV episode, short, trailer, DVD featurette, etc. Unofficial goal of hitting 100, but don't ignore real life to hit it. Everyone who shows up in either thread is an equal "winner". Anything listed on IMDB with a genre of action, adventure, crime, or mystery (or anything that even vaguely could be argued as should be listed as such) counts.

Checklist is complete, official, and in post #3 for easier editing and cut and pasting.

Prizes: I am looking for sponsors, and would appreciate any help or leads in that area. I'm hoping for at least our consistently fantastic GoldenWheels and Hamilton Books. I am also going to donate at least one DVD from my expanding "doubles" corner. Everyone who actively participates will get one prize entry in the raffle. Active participation is defined as posting at least once in this discussion thread, and keeping your list post updated. Anyone who completes the optional and fairly simple checklist will get an extra chance in the raffle. Anyone who agrees to mail out an appropriate prize will get an extra chance as well. I don't do PMs, so you'll have to deal with me via email if you want to be included in the drawing.

This is the discussion thread. Discuss.

That's one of my goals as well. I've had the set for some time and am still in the Connery films. I'm also determined to finish up 24 this year. I have Redemption and the last two seasons left.

Everything I didn't finish for the TV Challenge: Action-packed western episodes, Power Rangers, Lone Wolf and Cub, Zatoichi, Shadow Warriors, Ultraman, Fight Dragon!, Sukeban Deka, etc. Plus some Film Noir box sets.

EXPENDABLES 2 was my second favorite movie last year (after DJANGO UNCHAINED).

I just purchased S4 of Mission Impossible and am looking at watching S3 & S4 of that series plus finish the Peter Gunn set I purchased in January. Of course plans seem to *always* change...

I don't have a set goal, maybe work through some of my MC 50 movie sets, and revisit some of the tv series I didnt get to in the TV Challenge.

I just resubbed to Hulu Plus, in order to watch some Irwin Allen shows, as some of my DVDs are missing. I may watch some of the Zatoichi movies as well.

re: The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2013

As usual, I'm not sure what I'll end up watching. I'm trying to concentrate on TV this entire year, and want to watch my Ultraman sets; but I also need to do last year's goal of finally opening up my Dirty Harry BD set. Either way, March is looking to be about a 20 total hours of viewing month, so it's likely one of those options and nothing else.

re: The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2013

The checklist looks pretty solid, but I've got a few of suggestions.

Swap out swashbuckler for swordplay, that will encompass movies like Three Musketeers (swashbuckler), Sleepy Eyes of Death: The Chinese Jade (Chambara) and Swordsman (wu xia).

How about including Sonny Chiba into the stars list and Wong Jing and Yuen Chor into the directors list?

How about including a 'watch a sentai or tokusatsu item' under 'Complete at least seven of these categories'?

Also I've got a Marvel's The Avengers (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy + Digital Music Download) I'm willing to donate as a prize.

re: The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2013

I had a LOT of fun doing this last year so I'm really looking forward to another round. Not sure yet what I'll be watching but I suspect you'll see some Shaw Brothers and tokusatsu in my list. And I'm really going to try to get to Secret of the Incas this year. I've been obsessed with it ever since I saw the lobby card Trevor has in the first post. It's not the bare chested Chuck Heston that got to me -- it's the monster hat and the whole pre-Indy Indiana Jones look I've seen in other stills from the movie.

I need to crack my Dirty Harry set as well, but I'd rather save it for the B Movie challenge, when there's less competition.

SECRET OF THE INCAS was shot on location in Peru. Definitely a precursor of RAIDERS and a pretty wild movie in its own right. Yma Sumac, who was a major international music sensation at the time, plays some kind of Inca descendant of royalty. And sings, too! Heston plays a pretty mercenary character. A far cry from Moses, Ben-Hur and El Cid!

Looks good for the checklist, I'll add them in. Anyone else with checklist thoughts?

And thanks for the prize donation!

Oh, good idea. Ultraman it is for me then.

I've been on a Charlton Heston kick lately, so I'll try to find this one as well.

re: The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge - March 2013

I'll probably change my mind, and I'm still in the air about participating, but I tend to watch Action/Adventure movies all the time anyway. I'm leaning towards watching my James Bond films. It's been forever since I've watched most of them and I just finished my collection (well, I'm missing Never Say Never Again, though I think I know where the VHS is) the other day, so really feel like watching at least a few of them. Maybe go in order-I have the TV show, Casino Royale, so I'd probably start with that...

But, then again, I have so many that I want to watch that I haven't gotten around to, so my plans may change.
