Semi-related to the challenge: TV Horror Host Svengoolie (Rich Koz) apparently suffered his second heart attack a week ago and is currently hospitalized. They played a short graphic before the beginning of tonight's program (The original Universal Dracula) wishing him to get well, but I'm hoping they give a brief update during one of the commercial breaks.

For best list I vote Screwadu. Such elegance in its simplicity. The way it utilizes the white background to full effect. And look at the use of font and color to create a kaleidoscope of utter artness. You can read every single word!

Thanks to Surfinhank I will never have to try to make a fancy list again. I mean really, is there a reason to try after that? Straight-up Arial or Times New Roman from now on. Thanks, hank!
(I vote for Surfinhank as well, if it wasn't obvious enough already)

I saw Surfinhank's list early in the challenge and wondered if the format and style would be maintained. Awesome job and it definitely gets my vote too.
Have to make my vote official now in the PM. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P
I warned that I might have more to say about this year's challenge at some point. I could sense that there were some much different trends this year in my viewing than in years past. My curiosity got the best of me, and I compiled some numbers based on previous challenges based on decades of the films watched and came up with some interesting - to me, anyway - findings. I've spoiled the little table I made.
Challenge Comparison by Decade:
Going into this challenge, I had been watching a lot of films from Hollywood's Golden Age, specifically a lot from the '30s and '40s along with a bunch of B&W films. I wondered if some of that might carry over.
So, what did I find? That trend did indeed carry over. I watched 14 films from the '30s this year compared to 6 in 1930, my previous high for that decade. Another big change is the '502, which saw 14 this year while the previous high was 9 in 2008. While 6 films from the 1940s may not seem like much, it's twice the previous high of 3 in 2011. What's up the '40s? How come I hardly watch any films from that decade every challenge? With so many more films from those decades being watched, you would expect another decade to take a hit. Sure enough, my 1980s viewings took a major dive to just 13, the first time I didn't watch at least 20 movies from that decade in a challenge.
Looking across all challenges, I was surprised to see that my totals for the 1920s, 1960s and 1970s have stayed pretty consistent. I also thought it interesting that last year I pointed out how odd I found it that I had so few films from the '90s on my list. Lo and behold, that was an oddball year because every other year I watched either 9 or 10 films from that decade. It's hard to judge too much from 2000s and 2010s because I think TV viewings skew those numbers. Maybe I should count only movies ...
This challenge also marked the end of a few traditions as well. This marks the first year I didn't go see the new Paranormal Activity film in theaters. I blame that for its late start and my empty bank account. Some other films left gathering dust on the shelves for the first time: Freaks, The Most Dangerous Game, Axe, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait (I always used this one for the documentary item on the checklist), and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The biggest surprise was that the original Halloween went unwatched this year. I had watched it on Halloween night every other year. I had planned on doing so this year as well, but I gave my company the choice between that and Trick 'r Treat since I knew most of them hadn't seen that one before. They chose Trick 'r Treat. They all enjoyed it, but I will admit that I missed not seeing Halloween this year. Maybe it will make it all the more special next year.
Aside from Halloween and a couple other films, I managed to watch almost everything I had planned. I hit up all but one film the Universal Monsters set and finally got myself to watch The Thing From Another World, the movie I've been saying I would watch for the first time every challenge. I was surprised at just how productive I managed to be with my movie watching. It should be interesting to see what direction I go next year. I'm hoping I will once again be employed full time and able to splurge on new Blu-rays and DVDs.

If you're the type of person amused by fake Criterion Collection covers fakecriterions.tumblr.com has a Faked From the Dead theme emphasizing horror movie faux Criterion covers.

Haha. If it makes you feel better, I don't own a copy of Solange. My friend brought his over. Great film, and one of my favorites of the challenge. I really need to list my top ten, but the scores pretty much sum it up.

Okay, just wanted to mention a few things before posting the results thread...
First of all, keep your eyes peeled because I'm planning on sending all the prize winners advance notice through both PM and email sometime tomorrow. It'll just be a generic message saying you've won something, but not what you've won. This is to get a jump on collecting addresses.
The thread itself will be up no later than Wednesday night (11/21, same as last year) ...finished or not. Aside from a few possible videos and pictures, I'm probably not gonna be able to do the whole personalized comments thing this year.
Also, there's unfortunately a slight chance we might end up being short 3 prizes from TLA Cult. They could have been mistaken for review copies if/when sent to the DVDTalk/IB offices, although it's more likely they were never sent at all. I made the mistake of picking out backordered titles, so you can blame me if they never show up. I'm awaiting word from them and hopefully it'll get straightened out. If not, John Sinnott mentioned there's a DVD copy of one laying around that he'll let us have.
