Re: 3rd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
For me, Bambi is one of my least favorites because of his mother being killed. It's a little too sad for me. I tend to fast forward through the Lion King bit of his father being killed as well. I think people do make up what they remember. The mother dieing hits a chord in all of us (or most of us) and it does stay with you especially if you see it young when dieing isn't really real and this is one of the first movies children probably see that deals with the subject and it makes you think it could happen to YOUR mother so even though you don't see the shooting you know what happens and it goes from Bambi's mom dieing in the forest and the action happens off screen to 10-30 years later knowing that his mom was shot by hunters and killed.
So far I haven't been burned out. Maybe because I've taken a day or so off when I didn't want to watch anything and I also had some times when I couldn't watch regularly. Or maybe because it's my first time doing a challenge and I don't normally watch so many in a row. Or it could be because both sci-fi/fantasy and animation are my favorite genres of movies. I know I'm going to skip next month's challenge and may participate in the October one but not as intensive as these last two. The last couple weeks I've had a few moments where I've wanted to watch something other than animation and decided to put it off in favor of watching a challenge movie. So, I'm going to enjoy being able to watch those without feeling guilty I'm not focusing on the challenge.
I am struggling through Animaniacs. I really liked it more as a kid than I do know. Every once in a while is a good segment that I enjoy or a clever comment that hits home but otherwise I find it's just a little too wacky. I know I'm tempted to stop, but I have a disc and a half left and just want to get through it so I don't have to watch it again. Glad I picked this one up for cheap at Big Lots. I'd be upset if I had splurged and paid full price.

I don't think I'll make my goal of 24 hours for the month. Only at about 17 right now.

Seriously, one thing you may find particularly enjoyable about the Criterion Challenge is that view count is de-emphasized there. It's more about exploration than racking up stats. Even if you only watch one movie for it, you can find the challenge enriching if you're willing to discuss it - and that's the real objective of that challenge, more than the others: the discussion thread.
Plus, the eligibility of anything that was released by Criterion on LaserDisc means that it's not all foreign art house fare. You can watch The Wizard of Oz, for instance, or The Adventures of Robin Hood. 2001 and Casablanca are also both eligible. Wikipedia has this complete list of the LaserDisc titles.

Hmm, I'll think about it. Maybe if I end up watching something on the list, I'll join in. I just looked at the list and there are a lot of movies on it that I'd consider. I have been meaning to watch Adventures of Robin Hood. I bought it a while ago and haven't had a chance to watch my copy of it. I also have the Limited Edition of Wizard of Oz so I probably could take all month just watching that sucker, though I did just watch the movie at the end of July for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy challenge. Eh, I'm still a bit ambivalent to doing the challenge.

That is one of my all time favorite films. Absolutely my favorite of all the WB releases. Yes, more than Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, and more. Captain Blood would rank 2nd. I *really* like the films of Errol Flynn, especially the adventures.
I'd not planned to participate in the Criterion Challenge simply because I hit several others very hard and am in need of more time to rest up before the Horror Challenge hits. However, looking over that laserdisk list has me reconsidering as it contains many personal favorites.

I haven't watched Adv. of Robin Hood since I was a kid. I saw that it was getting harder to get on DVD so picked it up but haven't watched it yet because I am worried it won't hold up for me. I did see some others that are my favorites too, but like you, I feel I need a bit of a challenge break.
Popped in Bambi to watch after talking about it here. There's almost a rawness to the animation I haven't noticed before. I supposed because it's an early film where they're learning their trade really, but there is something there that just makes me think "Bambi" when I see it. I still love the scene when it's raining and the music/song is playing. I think they drew it so well to match the drops falling in time with the music and singing. Probably my favorite scene. Anyone else ever want a pet skunk after watching this movie?

Stuck Dumbo in as well. This is a short one-just over an hour. Forgot that it was this short...may get another one in as well before going to bed. I have to admit, I'm pretty free with my time right now as I'm not able to work. I would never be able to keep up this pace if I had to put in a shift at work, too.

Closed out the Challenge with some of the Brakhage shorts to get double Challenge credit. I think I hate his films, but haven't really explored them, and see the possibility of someday appreciating or even loving this type of experimental art house crap.
Watched about 5 films and 5 discs of animation episodes over the month, more than I expected, but didn't get to any of the films I really wanted to see this month (my 3D animation to test out my new TV, and Watership Down). Next year I hope to at least double my output, as I have tons of animation in my unwatched (virtual) pile.

My plan to watch Beast King GoLion (Voltron) and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV (Vehicle Voltron) did not happen with this challenge -- this month went by too quickly. I watched GoLion last year when I purchased the DVD set but I have not completed watching Dairugger XV as of yet... perhaps next year's challenge. I was surprised to see that Dairugger XV is now OOP -- I'm glad I got the third volume last year when it was released.
With the GoLion series completed I watched my Heavy Metal Blu-ray for the first time. I noticed that some parts looked really good and some parts looked rather ruddy for an HD release. It was a fun revisiting this movie since I had it on VHS for many years.
I don't know if I'll squeeze another title in or not but it's been a fun challenge and I have enjoyed reading this discussion thread and seeing everyone's titles viewed in the list thread.

I'm still deciding if I'll watch any more animation. Then I start reading the Criterion Challenge list because that prior link has me on the fence about participating and run across this:
Sorry to pull you out of context there MinLShaw but when reading that comment it hit me that I tend to slow down on animation for much the same reason. While I really like many animated series and films I feel "burnt out" more quickly when watching animation marathon style. In a way I find that a bit sad because there's so much really good animation available.
I'm with you on the enjoyment factor I get from participating in the challenges. They tend to keep me a bit focused on my ever growing unwatched pile and collection as a whole.

Just re-watched Toy Story 2 last night. As with other Pixar titles, this movie looks gorgeous on blu-ray and having forgot pretty much the entire plot, I had an amazing time watching it. Gotta re-watch the third one today to wrap up the challenge.

I went camping last night and did some crabbing last night and this morning, so that cut into my last minute time. I'll probably catch a few shows and call it a day.

Watching All Dogs Go to Heaven. Has anyone else noticed how much the alligator from the Princess and the Frog resembles this one? They both are musicians during Mardi Gras...I have a feeling the Frog one was influenced by the Heaven one.
Not sure what I'm ending the challenge with. Have Kung Fu Panda in the player to watch in a minute and I'll probably have enough time to watch at least one more before I go to bed.
I really managed to clear a lot of my unwatched animation pile. The ones left are about half TV shows. I think there's a tv challenge-maybe I'll finish them off then.

Finished up with Rio, not bad, and some episodes of Robotech. Wish I could have finished the whole Macross Saga this month.

Finished the challenge with Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. Was going to stop at midnight with Lady and the Tramp but when I added my numbers, I was only an hour away from making 5 days, so I decided to take advantage of the challenge ending at dawn.
Ending time for me is 7239 min or 5 days 0 hours 39 min. Not too shabby!

My participation was lower than I'd intended/hoped, with there being more days than not where I watched nothing at all. I didn't really have any monkeys on my back in animation that I've been itching to address, so I don't feel like I squandered this challenge, per se, though I had initially planned to revisit Batman: The Animated Series since this marked its 20th anniversary. I am presently now thinking of gorging on it in November during NaNoWriMo. Last year, I re-watched The Sopranos as part of my writing structure and it worked quite well. We'll see.
As for what I did watch, it was nice to finish off She-Ra, Princess of Power Season One after starting Volume Two last year. That show is genuinely satisfying to me to re-watch. I haven't yet decided whether to address Season Two in January for the TV on DVD* Challenge or hold off till next year's Animation Challenge.
I've shared my reviews throughout the discussion thread, and they're linked in my list post so I don't feel the need to rehash anything here. I'll just cut to my end-of-challenge awards.

Well, I finished up with SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS and the first two episodes of "Tenchi Muyo!" Then, realizing I was seven minutes short of three days, I put in a short cartoon from 1931 called "In a Cartoon Studio," a fanciful look at how animated cartoons are made. And that put me over the hump to finish with three whole days of viewing.

Re: 3rd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
I added mine up to discover, too late I might add, that I was 7 minutes short of 1 day 10 hours. Based on a casual calculation that's about half of what I did last year.
And I think we've created a monster with LJG765!

I tried, but the timekeeping requirement made it seem too much like work, so I gave up. Maybe next year.
