Re: 5th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

Went to the theaters to see The Dark Knight Rises this weekend (which I hardly ever go see movies opening weekend) and really enjoyed it so decided to watch the first two this weekend since i just recently bought the blurays.
I was never a big fan of Begins but watching them all together I did enjoy it more as a part of the overall trilogy and not just as a stand alone movie. Rises imo was the more entertaining movie of the three even if they didnt have as memorable of a character in it as the Joker in TDK

today im gonna go in the Fantasy direction and watch the brilliant troll 2

Nice. This has been sitting in my Netflix Instant queue forever. Debating if I should watch the original Troll first.

The two have absolutely nothing to do with each other, if that helps any. It'd be like if we had a movie called Wizard of Oz 2 but the actual film was Starship Troopers.

Agree. While I feel it's rather dumb the *actual tower* is, or rather was, really named rather generically "The Clock Tower" in spite of the world calling it "Big Ben". It's that 13.5 ton Great Bell within the tower that has the nickname "Big Ben". Considering that Queen Elizabeth is only the 2nd monarch to sit on the throne for 60 years (Victoria the other) it seems fitting that the tower should bear her name considering the tower at the other end of the Palace of Westminster bears the name of Queen Victoria. It was renamed for *her* diamond jubilee. From what I've read most Brits seem to oppose the name change and I'm sure everyone will *still* call the clock tower "Big Ben" in spite of the new "official" name, or they'll use the new nickname bestowed by the British Press - "Large Liz".

She could be queen for eternity. They're still giving the clock a sex change.

If she were a queen with some sort of power, then I could see it being somewhat reasonable. As it is, she's just an old biddy we're all just waiting to die off. They should just make some small, lame monument and put a plaque with her name on it.

Doing a B&W / Silent movie day. This Aelita: The Queen Of Mars is becoming a bit laborious.

Just finished Oblivion (1994), a DVD I won in one of the challenges (don't remember just which). Another of those "so bad it's good" films. *Lots* of "names" including George Takei, Isaac Hayes, Julie Newmar, and Meg Foster. All with horrible lines and terrible delivery. The screenplay is by comic scribe Peter David (Supergirl, Aquaman, and others). It's full of hammy acting, cliche one-liners, a bingo game going on upstairs from a funeral (plus it suggests/ties into many lines), cowboys, leather, ray guns, damsel in distress, town to be saved, and anything else they could think of. It was enough fun I was contemplating picking up Oblivion 2 until I saw the prices at Amazon! It's not *that* fun... :)

Both Oblivion and Oblivion 2: Backlash can be gotten from Fullmoon for $10 a pop. Both are full frame which is the OAR as far as I can tell (especially given when they were made, who made them, and the market they were made for).

Well, hit number 50! For my first challenge, I think that's pretty good. Watched LotR: Two Towers extended version tonight. Part 3 tomorrow.

Thanks! I thought of that after I'd checked Amazon but just didn't follow through. :) Yeah, from what I've read both were shot with TV in mind so FF is OAR.

I've been slacking--spent the weekend with family in Vermont, but I want to get to at least 75 titles before this challenge ends, including a LOTR marathon this weekend.

Spoiler warning about Doomsday for Trevor

This talk of Oblivion is making me want to watch them both. I'm stuck in the middle of a couple of movies I don't really care for. At work I have Bedknobs and Broomsticks and at home I'm trying to work through Doomsday. I'm only 30 minutes into Doomsday, over the course of 2 days. The biggest issue for me is that I don't see the female lead as tough, I see her as an incompetent boob since she

Granted, it's supposed to take place over there but it's still a cliche. The also haven't made clear what they call Big Ben out there in the future.

Re: 5th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I only heard of the movie 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. last summer. I just watched it and it's very odd. I love Dr. Seuss and didn't know he had written a movie. If I had come across this on TV randomly, I would have immediately guessed he had a hand in it. The costumes/sets/dialogue/music all have a heavy Seuss influence. All you have to do is look at the hat Bart wears to see it. I think it's about 30 minutes too long-would have made a much better short film than a feature length.

Fun fact: Has a piece of equipment one of the guards wear that looks just like a modern iPod.

Re: 5th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

A couple of days ago I started watching Lexx. I'd only seen an odd episode or two back when sci-fi was airing the series and never got into it mainly due to the air times but also due to not knowing anything that had happened up to those episodes and the sheer oddness of the series. I've picked up S1-S3 over the past few months from Target ($5/season) as a blind buy figuring for $5 each it's worth a chance. I'd gone into the series not sure what to expect as those few episodes I'd seen were so odd and didn't impress me enough to make attempts to see more. So far, I'm glad I picked it up as it's a quirky ride. I've seen it compared to Red Dwarf" which isn't too far off based on the quirkiness of the series but that's pretty much where the similarities end at this point. So far I've watched the first 3 "movies" and would say it's not as funny as Red Dwarf with more emphasis on the "sci-fi" trappings. Overall, this is one *very* odd series and I'm intrigued enough to want to see where it's headed. There are a couple of similarities to Farscape that make me wonder if Rockne S. O'Bannon saw Lexx and lifted those items in slightly modified form to use in Farscape. Have I said this is one *weird* series?

Ah I loved LEXX. Like you I had only seen a few eps here and there. My friend Tarfrimmer and I watched the whole series this past year. Totally loved it. The quirkiness just made it for me. Hope you enjoy your watching of the rest of the series.

I can say that alcohol doesn't make Doomsday any better. It's easily one of the worst movies I've seen this year, in terms of plot holes being so bad that it ruins a film. It's only slightly better than Sucker Punch in that there's slightly more story to it.

Off the top of my head, I believe these would also qualify:

District 9
Never Let Me Go
Watchmen

Even though I've owned the DVD of Season One for ten years, I don't think I've actually seen an episode of The Outer Limits. This seems as good a time as any to dust it off.

You're talking about the original B&W series? If so, you are in for a treat. Start at the beginning; "The Galaxy Being" is a fine start.

Just saw Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter at the dollar theater. What fun eye candy! It took itself a lot more seriously than I thought it would - especially for such a silly concept.

I envy you, although I really haven't seen much of it in my lifetime either. Maybe 20 or so episodes total on cable repeats back in my childhood. I have the dvd sets unopened, but just bought the videos on Amazon as they had both seasons for $4 each. Maybe I'll watch some of that tonight.
