Odd Tastes In Movies
Has anyone ever looked at your collection or have you even been talking about movies and had someone say that they would never think you'd like certain kinds of movies because of the type of person they believe you to be ? I'm 32 and a guy, so a lot of the kinds of movie I love, a lot of people might think was pretty weird. I collect classic Disney animation, especially stuff like Snow White, Cinderella, and Little Mermaid. This would appear to be especially odd because the majority of my movie collection is 50s/60s scifi, 90s tv movies, disaster movies, and stuff like the X-Men movies and 80s movies and cartoons from when I was a kid.

You just described a good chunk of my collection. I've got about 350 animation dvds, twice as much anime, loads of 50s/60s scifi and around 600 discs of Asian movies/tv. Not to mention too mention all the comedies, horrors, etc...
It's usually more along of, 'You have that many dvds?', and maybe they're slightly incredulous at all the foreign dvds.

Most people are pretty surprised by the amount of 80s slasher movies I have. Most of my collection is in the Adventure, Fantasy, Romance, Comedy genres.
Also I'm a 'Survivor' geek and have all the MOD releases, those always get a chuckle.

People know before they are even let into seeing my collection that I don't give a damn what they think. Apparently I enjoy all different genres, from chick flicks to action and EVERYTHING in between. Except for a few blind buys, I wouldn't buy something I didn't already like or haven't heard good things about. Why should anyone care if I have "Clueless" next to "Die Hard" on my shelf? Odd, yes, but again who gives a damn.

Yes but for a weird reason...I didn't really enjoy slasher or even horror movies that weren't mainstream until five or six years ago. Same thing with most cult/B movies. Then I discovered the genres. And got REALLY into them.
So my friends who knew me before I found this stuff...they see my collection and are like "wtf is all this weird stuff?"

My friends and family are baffled by the lack of gay porn in my collection.
Mostly, people are simple astounded at the size of my collection, the sheer volume of DVDs and BDs stuffed into one room. Several people did raise an eyebrow at my Powerpuff Girls box set. One person couldn't get past the fact that I have both volumes of the Adventures of Ma & Pa Kettle movies.

It's kind of weird, but since my wife left and took 1/3 of the library with her, what I have remaining looks much more standard than what we had. She took almost all of the horror, for instance, and quite a lot of the dramas and comedies. I'm left with the kind of library you'd expect from a manchild in his 30s (i.e., lots of superheroes, Spielberg, etc.). To be honest, if you guessed my taste based solely on my disc library, you'd probably be surprised I can have an intelligent conversation about movies at all.

Re: Odd Tastes In Movies
Mine runs the gamut. Sci-Fi (emphasis on 50s/60s "B" films but includes all decades and budgets), Horror (primarily "classical" horror from 30s-60s), Fantasy (mostly 50s/60s but most decades are represented), Comedy (emphasis on 30s-60s but includes all decades), Classics (20s-60s primarily), Costume Drama/Adventure (mostly 30s-60s), Westerns, Serials, Animation, Cult, Superhero (comic book), as well as some "chick flicks", Musicals, Action, Noir, Drama, Documentaries, and others. The majority of films are pre-1970 with diminishing numbers as the year increases. Most people can't get past the *number* of films in my library and rarely stop to look at/consider all the genres represented.
And one of my "kids" (33 - avid hunter, beer drinking kind of guy) *loves* Disney animation as well as Dukes of Hazzard. You're *not* alone.

People who know me tend not to be too shocked at what I have. I had a buddy I printed my dvd list for. He showed it to other people that I work with but don't talk to that often, and the biggest comments were:
I haven't heard of half of these
He has a lot of foreign films.
What's LADY TERMINATOR?
He must really like British TV
I also bought in to the disney vault thing and was buying these movies back when I was married and thinking about dvd's for potential kids. So there are quite a few of those mixed in.

The only two people (besides me
) who have an inkling what's in my collection (other than whoever checks my link) are my wife and my younger brother, and he's only scratched the surface (but likes what he's seen). My wife likes most of what I have, there are a few she doesn't particularly care for (Videodrome is NOT one of her favorites), but for the most part she enjoys whatever we watch. My tastes run primarily to SciFi, Fantasy/Adventure and Horror with just a smattering of Action, Drama, and Comedy. -kd5-

I'm a straight guy and have a lot of musicals in my collection. I don't buy into stereotypes, but some folks do and I guess they're a little surprised at that. No Streisand, however.
