First disc I bought (and the disc that convinced me the time was right to jump into the DVD format) was Star Trek: The Motion Picture--Director's Edition. Still have it and haven't upgraded because, as many well know, the Director's Edition hasn't been upgraded to Blu-Ray owing to some of the "fixes" being in standard def (as I recall).

Bought this literally 6 months before I had a player. Of course I still own and watch it. I will upgrade in a heartbeat.

i got any given sunday with my dvd player i tech still have it but its been sitting in my yard sale box for years.

the dvd i bought with it was Scarface, but i cant remember but for some reason when it was originally released it was put out of print and was selling online for a crazy amount not sure what it was all about since that was back in 00-01

For me, Bull Durham, Vertigo, Blade Runner (I think), Singin in the Rain, and whatever other Hitchcocks were available back in 98 or 99. I still have them all, but I'm afraid to watch Vertigo because it probably developed DVD rot and I don't want to know. I upgraded Blade Runner to the multiple version DVD set a few years ago. Updated Singin in the Rain to the restored DVD version also.

No. I bought the Matrix, American Pie & South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut when I got a DVD Drive for my PC. All three have been upgraded to BD

Yup, The Fifth Element - yes I was that person that didn't get in on the FREE deal for that and a handful of others when you bought the player. Haven't upgraded but probably will at some point.

The first DVD I bought was a full-screen version of Don't Look In The Basement at a used bookstore for 10.00. At that time I thought it was a bargain and I was really jacked to get a classic from my youngeer days. I did not even get a DVD player to view it on until several months later and I still loved it. I kind of regret selling it to a pawn shop when I replaced it with the widescreen version but they gave me 2.00 for it which was as good as it would ever get.

I didn't get my first DVD player until 2000. The very first DVD I bought was The Criterion Collection DVD of "The Last Temptation of Christ", which had then just been released. I was hooked on DVD immediately after that, and went right out and bought "Jaws", "Platoon", "The Exorcist", "Goodfellas", "Born on the Fourth of July", and "An American Werewolf in London" all in one big shopping spree! I have since replaced all of them on blu ray except "Jaws" which isn't out until August and I have the UK region free blu ray of "Fourth of July". I got my first blu ray player in 2010, and at the same time I bought "Alice in Wonderland"(2010), "The Wolfman"(2010), "Casino", "Blue Thunder", and "Goodfellas". I still have everything.

Yep. Hoodlum and Air Force One purchased back in 1998. I upgraded AFO to Blu but still kept the DVD for memories sake.

This Is Spinal Tap Criterion Collection. Still have it. I bought a PC with a DVD-ROM drive before I had an actual DVD player. Quickly got addicted to audio commentaries. These days, I can't even sit through them.

The first DVD I ever bought was Star Wars Episode 3. I wasn't a movie collector when it released. I just rented movies for the most part. Now I'm the exact opposite, I buy way more than I rent. But, I don't own my Episode 3 dvd anymore. I bought the Complete Saga on Blu-Ray. I feel ashamed that I started collecting so late when it comes to DVD's.

Austin Powers way back in '98 or '99. Still have it. That movie forced me to upgrade my TV to one with AV jacks. Had always just used the coaxil port before & didn't know the copywrite protection effect by using the AV jacks on the VCR player. So I got my DVD player & DVD then had to wait a few weeks until I got a new TV. Still have that original TV & the TV I upgraded to. Both haven't been used in years but they still work.

That's my first DVD as well, from April of 2000. And I still have it. But I don't think there's much of anything else they could've put on there.. the only thing it's missing is the Stake deleted scene from the Criterion LD.

Sure do. I got my first DVD player on my 15th birthday on February 28, 1999 (I was actually born on leap day). I bought both Austin Powers & Truman Show (I don't have Truman Show anymore). I have upgraded to the BD of the Austin Powers movies but can't part ways with the DVD I've owned for over 13 years.

Still got mine; I got it with the DVD player - as part of an offer I think - it's the Godzilla remake which actually at the time made quite a good showcase for DVD. The release is so old it's in one of those very early jewelcase style cases (as thin as a CD case but twice the height). I've only got one other of those, Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Shame they didn't catch on as my DVD collection would occupy about half the shelfspace it currently uses!

Certainly I won;t be upgrading it as it;s a rubbish film!

My first DVD was The Crow, which I bought in November 2002. I still have it and will probably upgrade it when the Blu-ray goes down to $5 (or less) again.

Mine was X-files season 1 that I bought off ebay even before I even had a DVD player I still have it with me of course and patiently await the day when X-files makes it’s BD debut.

I can't recall exactly, but were there many CG FX shots in that show? It's probably going to run into the same issue as Star Trek TNG and many other shows of the same era: those FX shots were only done in standard definition and the move to hidef won't be pretty. Now, Star Trek TNG is getting a CGI redo, but they've got a much bigger fanbase. The X-Files was big, but would it still sell enough to justify that expense?
