Generations has 48% at Rotten Tomatoes. You'd probably have to go with Final Frontier at 21% or maybe Nemesis at 38% if you are really unforgiving.

First post has been updated with rules. Rule changes this year is the elimination of the commentary and "riff" rules. Commentaries and Riffs now count as regular viewings with no restrictions.

You still have a "Second Annual Drive-In" in the first post.

Wasn't there a list, or going to be a list or distributors that were automatically safe? Am I confusing challenges?

It's still four weeks away. Give him time.

I'm pretty sure last year there was, along with the directors and actors lists, a list of production companies & distributors that were safe, so you can check that thread if you can't wait.

I'd have to give it to 'em as I'm one of a small handful of people who actually like Final Frontier better than Generations. I don't yet know how I feel about Nemesis but I picked up a copy at BL several months back for $3. I'm fairly certain I overpaid by $2.95 or so but since you've pretty much given it a "pass" I'll save it for this one rather than waste it on the Action/Adventure challenge!

Thanks. Fixed it and have put up the safe lists. The distributor list is more of a guide, though. Some, like Mill Creek, have been putting up non-safe material, like TV shows.

That's a tough category, since it is so subjective. I tend to go more by reputation. Other than the cruddy way they dealt with Kirk, Generations isn't usually considered to be really that bad. Final Frontier was apparently yanked from canon by Roddenberry it was so bad. I still haven't seen Nemesis, but it has the reputation of being the worst of the Next Gen movies.

But reputation is questionable as well. Godfather 3 has a reputation of being "bad", but Roger Ebert gave it a higher "star" rating than he did Godfather 2. I don't know I'm ready to think GF3 is right for this challenge quite yet.

Ruling on:

MAJOR DUNDEE was not "Drive-in, Exploitation, or B-movie." Nor a notorious flop. It was a big-budget major release from a major studio featuring a high-profile cast led by one of Hollywood's top stars at the time.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is on the safe list, so JCVD is automatic.

Man Friday might sneak in as Blaxploitation. It looks interesting.

Not sure about Major Dundee. Seems a bit classy for this. Might sneak in as a Western, but I'm not sure about Sam Peckinpah. Any other opinions on this?

Edit: Thanks, Ash. That's what I was leaning toward.

I watched this on last year's challenge. Both Davd "Badazzmofo" Walker and Bill "Sleazoid Express" Landis reviewed it for their publications/books, so it should be safe to be included.

I'd say Death Wish is a definite and Up In Smoke probably is too.

Up in Smoke. Yes. Drug Movie
Death Wish. Yes. Vigilante Film
Mother, Jugs and Speed. I haven't seen this one since I was a kid. It feels right, but it might have been a mainstream 70s comedy. I'll tentatively say yes.
Straight out of Brooklyn. Yes. Hood Film. It's one of those movies self financed through credit cards about "hood" life. That's gotta count.
Angels with Dirty Faces. Gangster movie. This gets in because of the Bowery Boys.

While the stars had "name recognition/draw" they were not the "big draw" types. They were on their way up (Keitel) down/stagnating (Welch) or seeing if feature films were a viable venue for their talents (Cosby). I saw it when it came out and it had a "B" movie feel even back then. It was released in May of that year and is fairly representative of that decade's version of the "Summer/Teen Comedy" film. I'd give it a "yes".

Thanks. I have all the TNG movies in a box set, so maybe I'll watch Nemesis instead.

70s are a tough decade, since almost all movies have a B-movie feel.

In preparation for this Challenge, I just ordered 3 Mill Creek 50 movie sets from Amazon, Warriors, Sci Fi Classics, and Sci Fi Invasion, and I have a 9 movie martial arts set coming from Amazon, and already received the Mill Creek 20 Monster Movie set, so I am set for this challenge.

If you're expecting your stereotypical Van Damme picture, then prepare to be disappointed. It's not a B-movie (it's not even an action movie), and Van Damme gives the best performance of his career. I personally think that this film and a handful of Van Damme's other films shouldn't qualify for this challenge; but I guess he's on some sort of "safe list," so whatever. Just saying.

Yes, it sometimes felt that way, like everyone was just coasting, but there are many excellent films from that decade. I've read that Hollywood produced some of its most critically acclaimed and financially successful films since its supposed "golden era" during the 70s.

I found this list of "100 Great films of the 1970s" and while it omits some I'd have included and adds some I'd have left off it's a pretty good list:

That's a great list. I've seen 81 of the 100, 76 of them in theaters when they first came out. I might not include all of them on such a list myself, but I understand why others would include them. My major dispute with the list is the omission of so many key genre films from the era, e.g. ORCA, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, THE OMEGA MAN, and the complete lack of any Peckinpah film on the list (PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID and THE GETAWAY should have been there, and maybe STRAW DOGS). My list would be different, but I do like this list. It does kind of sum up what was considered mainstream cinema of the decade--and it brings back a lot of memories.

Re: Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge March 31-April 30 2012

I made it to 23 films in 2010. Was way too busy last year. This year, I'm back and I really need to clear through my unwatched exploitation pile which gets bigger by the day.

This year I want to watch a lot of direct-to-video softcore stuff from the '90s. It's another form of sexploitation not really listed here in the challenge. Films with Shannon Tweed, Maria Ford, Shauna O'Brien, Angie Everhart, Andrew Stevens, Michael Pare, etc.
