Laurel and Hardy Essentials 10-disc DVD collection
I just purchased this set and have watched the first 5 shorts from 1929. All the reviews rave about the image restoration done on this DVD collection, and so far I've not seen much of it. The first 5 shorts have a lot..... I need to stress A LOT of specks and scratches in the image. The only "restoration" that I see only appears in maybe a play on the image contrast levels. Some audio work may have been done to improve it, but that's not so hot. I understand the age and overuse of these films, but to laud there restoration seems excessive. There certainly has been no attempt to remove specks or scratches in the first 5 or six shorts. I'm hoping to see a noticable "restoration" difference in the latter films. I already own another L&H DVD that contains "Music Box" and "Sons of the Desert" on it and the restoration is incredible. I'm hoping that the same care made with the work done on that DVD will show itself soon on this set. What do you think?

You've got to consider how old these shorts are primarily.

I know how old the films are but with digital technology, the image "bugs, specks and scratches" can be greatly reduced, if not completely removed if one cares enough to invest the time. If one does not care to commit to that, then they should not emphasize the word "restoration" on their packaging. Thanks!

More people will hopefully chime in. WE've had many conversations over the years over restorations and it really comes down to source elements. The better they are, the better the restoration.

The same applies to the term UNCUT. Many DVDTalkers have been incensed over the free usage of that term. (Hint..... Ren & Stimpy).

Let's also be grateful that these shorts are out after years and years of waiting but because of the age of these shorts dating back to as far as 1929, there is still going to be some form of wear and tear on them, so expect that whenever dealing with film stock of that era.
