The First Ever "November Comedy Challenge" |-List Thread-|
http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/...ge/banner3.jpg Sponsored by http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...miltonbook.gif | Challenge starts November 1st 12AM and ends December 1st at dawn | This thread is only for lists. All discussion should go here: **DISCUSSION THREAD** RULES Much like the genre I want this challenge to be fun and relaxed so use your best judgment on whether something qualifies. If you’re unsure about a titles genre classification IMDB and Allrovi are excellent references. There is a separate list thread where you can post what you’ve watched. Be creative and have fun with it. My only request is you must number your list. It will greatly help me tally things up once the challenge is over. Feel free to add other info such as first time viewings, format, and personal goals. It’s not required, these are just things people generally include and I plan on tallying up once the challenge is over. WHAT QUALIFIES Movies = 1 entry Tv shows count according to the length they aired on television (including commercials)
Any combination of shorts totaling 90 minutes = 1 entry PRIZES TBA HOW TO WIN Entries will be compiled together and winners will be chosen at random. You can gain entries by:

Personal Goal: My goal is to just watch what I can. My wife is more into comedies than any other genre so I am hoping to take advantage of that. ☼ = First Time Viewings November 1, 2011 1. Wake Up, Ron Burgundy☼ (2004, DVD) Oh my God!!! What a pile of crap. These scenes should have remained on the cutting room floor where they belonged. I wouldn't have minded seeing them as extra deleted scenes, but as an actual movie, it fails completely. It just comes off as a retread of the original, which I am a HUGE fan of. November 11, 2011 6. Re: The First Ever "November Comedy Challenge" |-List Thread-|
Unless otherwise noted all are DVDs from my personal collection.
Bro's DVD = DVD from my brother's personal collection. * = First time viewing OLV = On-line viewing MT = Seen in Movie Theater during its current theatrical run. TCFS = Movie from the Too Cool For School DVD 12-pack. I'll not write individual reviews of those films since they all share common characteristics: they're all Crown International Pictures B-movies from the 70's and 80's. They're all teen comedies with little known stars, plenty of nudity and nonsensical plots. Having a sentimental connection to these films helps in finding them entertaining. Next to each movie title I'll note if there are any known actors. November 1 1. The Brady Bunch, S2 (1970) Episodes: The treasure of Sierra Avenue / A fistful of reasons / The not-so-ugly duckling / The tattle-tale November 2 2. The Brady Bunch, S2 (1970) Episodes: What goes up / Confessions, confessions / The impractical joker / Where there's smoke 3. The Brady Bunch, S2 (1970) Episodes: Will the real Jan Brady please stand up? / The drummer boy / Coming out party / Our son, the man 4. Johnny English Reborn* (2011) MT I haven't seen the first Johnny English movie but that didn't impede me from enjoying this one very much. Rowan Atkinson plays an MI7 British secret agent that spoofs the bond films in situations gadgets and all. Atkinson is just brilliant and helped by a great supporting cast including Gillian Anderson and Rosamund Pike (who has been in an actual Bond film). November 3 5. Friends With Benefits* (2011) MT I'm not in the demographic for romantic comedies so this one kind of bored me. The movie tries very hard to say it's not a romantic comedy by making fun of romantic comedy clichés. The dialogue is all witty remarks and sarcasm and it gets old after awhile. 6. The Brady Bunch, S2 (1970) Episodes: The liberation of Marcia Brady / Lights out / The winner / Double parked November 4 7. My Chauffeur* (1986) TCFS Deborah Foreman and Sam J. Jones (Flash Gordon) star. November 5 8. The Brady Bunch, S2 (1970) Episodes: The dropout / The babysitters / Alice's September song / Tell it like it is 9. Malibu Beach* (1978) November 6 10. Welcome Back Kotter (1975) Bro's DVD Episodes: The great debate / Basket case / Welcome back (pilot) / Whodunit? 11. Tomboy* (1985) TCFS Betsy Russel stars as the titular Tomboy who also appeared in several other teen comedies as well as some of the Saw films. November 7 12. Welcome Back Kotter (1975) Bro's DVD Episodes: The election / No more Mr. Nice Guy / Classroom marriage / One of our sweathogs is missing November 8-9 Nothing November 10 13. Welcome Back Kotter (1975) Bro's DVD Episodes: Mr. Kotter, teacher / The reunion / Barbarino's girl / California dreamin' November 11 14. Welcome Back Kotter (1975) Bro's DVD Episodes: Arrivederci, Arnold / The longest weekend / The sit-in / Dr. Epstein I presume November 12 Nothing November 13 15. Welcome Back Kotter (1976) Bro's DVD Episodes: Follow the leader parts 1 & 2 / One flu over the cuckoo's nest / The telethon November 14 16. Welcome Back Kotter (1976) Bro's DVD Episodes: Kotter makes good / Father Vinnie • The Munsters* Episodes: S1 (1964) OLV My fair Munster / S2 (1965) Herman's peace offensive November 15 17. Chico and the Man (1974-75) Bro's DVD Episodes: Pilot / If I were a rich man / Chico and the Van / Chico's padre November 16 18. Chico and the Man (1974-75) Bro's DVD Episodes: Chico's cousin Pepe / Ed talks to God / Second thoughts (OLV)/ Old dog (OLV) November 17 Nothing November 18 19. Can't Stop the Music (1980) November 19 Nothing November 20 20. Weekend Pass* (1984) TCFS 21. The Last American Virgin (1982) This bittersweet film has got to be the best comedies of the 80's. The movie starts out as typical raunchy teen sex comedy with plenty of nudity, drugs and partying but takes a turn for the dramatic in the last part and gives you a punch-in-the-gut ending that you will not soon forget. November 21 22. The Hotel New Hampshire* (1984) Totally weird film that I'll have to watch a couple of more times before I get it. November 22 23. Sanford and Son (1972) Bro's DVD Episodes: Crossed swords / Happy birthday pop / Here comes the bride, here goes the bride / A matter of life and breath November 23 24. Tropic Thunder (2008) Bro's DVD Seen with commentary by Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. who, as promised, remains in character until he's done with the DVD commentary. November 24 25. Sanford and Son (1972) Bro's DVD Episodes: The copper caper / We were robbed / A pad for Lamont / The Great Sanford Siege November 25 26. Sanford and Son (1972) Bro's DVD Episodes: Coffins for sale / The barracuda / TV or not TV / the suitcase case November 26 27. Sanford and Son (1972) Bro's DVD Episodes: The return of the barracuda / The Piano Movers / By the numbers / The card sharps November 27 28 D.C. Cab (1983) Joel Schumaker wrote and directed this movie if you can believe that. The film is filled with a lot of recognizable faces, Paul Rodriguez, Gary Busey, The Barbarian Brothers, Irene Cara, etc. November 28 29. Sanford and Son (1972) Bro's DVD Episodes: Blood is thicker than junk / The light housekeeper / The dowry / Have gun, will sell November 29 30. Thank God It's Friday (1978) The poor man's Saturday Night Fever, this disco movie follows the familiar style of several parallel stories occurring during one night at a disco. Jeff Goldblum, Debra Winger, Donna Summer and Terri Nunn (later of the group Berlin) star. November 30 31. The Ice Pirates (1984) Science Fiction comedy about a bunch of space renegades that steal ice since water has become a valuable commodity in the future. Totally low-bor but very funny in some parts. It spoofs the entire SF genre, from Flash Gordon to Star Wars. Robert Urich, Mary Crosby, Anjelica Houston and Ron Perlman star. 32. ZOOM (1972-1975) 4 Episodes from the 70s children show on PBS. All of the episodes include numerous comedy sketches so I include it here. |

Ash Ketchum's Comedy Challenge 2011
http://videoeyeball.typepad.com/phot...11/bilko_2.jpg November 1, 2011 1. YOU’LL FIND OUT (1940/U.S., 97 min., b&w, musical-comedy-mystery/RKO) DVD (Karloff & Lugosi Horror Classics set) Dir.: David Butler. Cast: Kay Kyser, Dennis O’Keefe, Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Peter Lorre. And now to segue into the Comedy Challenge with the last film in the Karloff/Lugosi set left over from the Horror Challenge. Kay Kyser and his band--and their insipid songs and lame jokes--are stranded in an old dark house with three great horror stars who are wasted in this nonsense. Hopefully my next choice will have some actual laughs in it. November 3, 2011 2. THE DIVORCE OF LADY X (1938/England, 91 min., color, romantic comedy/London Films) DVD. Dir.: Tim Whelan. Cast: Laurence Olivier, Merle Oberon, Ralph Richardson. Olivier is an uptight divorce lawyer who is forced to spend a night in his hotel room with the impetuous Oberon, who proceeds to play him like a fiddle from start to finish in a British version of screwball comedy, the kind of thing Hollywood did so much snappier, although rarely with a world-class beauty like Oberon, who is both delightful and captivating. Olivier and Oberon reteamed the next year—in Hollywood—for the tragic romance, WUTHERING HEIGHTS. November 4, 2011 3. "Urusei Yatsura" (Those Obnoxious Aliens) Vol. 17 (1983/Japan, 100 min., color, anime sci-fi comedy TV series) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.) Dir.: Mamoru Oshii. The antics of horny high school boy Ataru and his hot live-in alien girlfriend Lum are given a gender-bending twist with the introduction of Ryuunosuke, a girl who’s been raised as a boy by her crazy father and is sought after by both boys and girls. #63: “Introducing Ryuunosuke: We Love the Sea!” #64: “The Season of Goodbyes” #65: “Date: Impossible for Ran” #66: “Happy Birthday My Darling” November 5, 2011 4. THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1939/U.S., 74 min., b&w, mystery-comedy/Paramount) DVD (Bob Hope Thanks for the Memories Collection) Dir.: Elliott Nugent. Cast: Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, Gale Sondergaard. Bob Hope and his one-liners are awkwardly inserted into a revamp of a venerable “old dark house” play. Hope would considerably improve his act in GHOST BREAKERS the following year. 5. "Love Hina" Vol. 1 (2000/Japan, 100 min., color, anime romantic comedy/ TV series) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.) Dir.: Shigeru Ueda. “Harem” comedy, although the difference between this and something like “Tenchi Muyo” is that the male protagonist here, a failed student serving as the manager at an all-girl dormitory, suffers a lot of abuse at the hands of his charges, constantly getting pummeled and thrown when his awkward behavior is mistaken as being perverted. But we all know that love will develop. Eps. 1-4 #1: All Girls Dorm with Outdoor Bath: Hot Spring #2: The Hinata’s New Resident Shinobu: Arrow Signs #3: Kendo Girl in Love? Swordplay #4: The Tokyo U Promise from 15 Years Ago: Diary November 6, 2011 6. "The Dennis O’Keefe Show" Vol. 1: eps. 1-4 (1959-60/U.S., 100 min., b&w, TV sitcom/UA) DVD Dir.: Don Weis. Cast: Dennis O’Keefe, Hope Emerson, Eloise Hardt. Random episodes from a forgotten sitcom on a public domain DVD. I happen to like Dennis O’Keefe (THE LEOPARD MAN, THE FIGHTING SEABEES, T-MEN, RAW DEAL, DRUMS OF TAHITI) a lot, so I was curious to see this. He plays a show biz columnist and single dad in New York and his vanity keeps getting him into trouble. I actually found each episode quite amusing. Onetime silent star Zasu Pitts (GREED) is a guest star in one episode. Outlandish stereotypes about hillbillies in one episode are countered with equally outlandish stereotypes about high society in the next. #11: “It’s Only Money” (Dec. 1, 1959) #26: “The Regency Club” (April 5, 1960) #27: “Dimples” (April 12, 1960) #32: “June Thursday” (May 10, 1960) 7. "Urusei Yatsura" (Those Obnoxious Aliens) Vol. 18 (1983/Japan, 100 min., color, anime sci-fi comedy TV series) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.) Dir.: Mamoru Oshii. Shades of Ranma!—Ataru is turned into a girl in one episode here, although that doesn’t seem to slow him down. Baseball, Momotaro the Peach Boy and clam monster cannibals feature in the other episodes. #67: Found: Valley of Peaches in the Camp-from-Hell #68: The Bridegroom’s Name is Ryuunosuke #69: A Letter in a Bottle: Seaside Spookiness! #70: The Sensational Debut of Mizunokouji Ton! November 7, 2011 8. "Mystery Science Theater 3000: 'Jack Frost'" Season 9 / #13, first aired July 12, 1997. VHS Mike Nelson and the crew take on a delightful Russian fantasy film from 1965 about a beleaguered girl tormented by a wicked stepmother ("Yep, standard issue") in a wintry forest. A handsome blond hero "with June Allyson hair" gets turned into a bear ("Do I crap in the woods?") and Father Frost, pictured as an old man here, gets involved. There's a humpbacked witch who tries to cook the hero, a house that moves around and walking trees. I laughed a lot. 9a. "The Bill Dana Show" (1963-64/U.S., 75 min., b&w, TV sitcom) VHS. Cast: Bill Dana, Gary Crosby, Jonathan Harris. #15: "A Tip for Uncle Sam" #19: "Speak for Yourself, Jose" #30: "What Elephant?" Bill Dana took his Jose Jimenez character (perfected in comedy sketches on the Steve Allen show) and built a sitcom around his employment as a bellhop at a high-class New York hotel, with Jonathan Harris as the snooty manager. Interestingly, one of these episodes casts Mark Goddard, Harris's co-star on "Lost in Space," as Jimenez's nephew. Don Adams, as the house dick, appears in the 3rd episode and has to help Jose hide an elephant. All in all, it's pretty funny and the character of Jimenez, based as he was, originally, on Latino stereotypes, is tastefully handled here. His immigrant background is played up, in an uplifting way, in the second episode. 9b. "Uti Var Hage" (Out in Our Meadow) (2003/Norway, 27 min., color/sketch comedy TV show) VHS (in Norwegian with English subs.) Who knew Norwegians were so funny? Four segments here, with the funniest being about a homeopathic emergency medical team and the second funniest being about how nobody in Denmark knows Danish anymore and the third funniest being about a scam operation selling tours to Spain for the blind. November 8, 2011 10. JUSTICE, MY FOOT! (1992/Hong Kong, 103 min., color, action-historical-courtroom comedy) DVD (in Cantonese with English subs.) Dir.: Johnnie To. Cast: Stephen Chow, Anita Mui, Carrie Ng. Stephen Chow’s comedies are an acquired taste. I like some, but not others. This one has a lot of courtroom scenes that I just didn’t get. Chow plays a fast-talking lawyer in Imperial China defending a new mother who’s accused of poisoning her husband. A lot of Chow's patter gets lost in translation. At least there are some action scenes where Chow’s wife (Anita Mui) displays wire-enhanced kung fu skills. Anyway, as Chow’s films go, KUNG FU HUSTLE is more my speed. 11. "Mystery Science Theater 3000: ‘The Human Duplicators’" Season 5 / #20, first aired Dec. 26, 1992. VHS. Joel Hodgson leads the crew in this one. I like Mike Nelson’s episodes better (he makes a cameo appearance here). It’s a bizarre movie—very cheap and silly, with the most breakable androids you’ll ever see. But it’s got some surprisingly solid name actors, including Richard Arlen, a onetime silent film star (WINGS); Barbara Nichols—a brassy blonde with a nasal voice playing a federal agent(!); George Macready, a distinguished high-level heavy (GILDA) as the lead android; Hugh Beaumont, better known as Ward Cleaver on “Leave It to Beaver,” which leads to some of the best gags; onetime Universal contract star George Nader in the hero role; and finally, giant-sized Richard Kiel as the alien in charge of the duplicating operation. (Surprisingly, there were no “To Serve Man” gags.) November 9, 2011 12. "Mystery Science Theater 3000: ‘The Magic Voyage of Sinbad’" Season 6 / #5, first aired Aug. 28, 1993. VHS. Another one with Joel leading the crew. They keep up a steady patter, even if much of it is only amusing and not laugh-out-loud funny. It's actually quite an interesting movie, a 1952 Russian fantasy film called SADKO that was dubbed into English and retitled around 1962. (I actually saw the dubbed version in a theater as a kid in 1964 and then saw the Russian original about 12 years later, only gradually realizing it was the same film.) It's very much like a fairy tale--with Sinbad riding on a seahorse underwater in one memorable "under the sea" moment--and the MST3K crew make much of the fact that there's nothing particularly "Arabian" about this "Sinbad" film. Something I was quite puzzled about as a ten-year-old. November 11, 2011 13. SEND ME NO FLOWERS (1964/U.S., 100 min., color, romantic comedy/Universal) DVD (part of the Doris Day and Rock Hudson Comedy Collection from Universal) Dir.: Norman Jewison. Stars: Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Tony Randall. The weakest of the Doris Day/Rock Hudson comedies and the only one I hadn’t seen before. Rock plays a hypochondriac who thinks he’s dying and tries to set up his wife with a replacement husband. The best scenes involve Rock and Tony Randall as a couple(!) evaluating suitable candidates. The two of them even share a bed for a night. 14. YOU CAN’T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN (1939/U.S., 76 min., b&w, comedy/Universal) VHS. Dir.: George Marshall. Cast: W.C. Fields, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. One of Fields’ funniest, although with this umpteenth viewing I concentrated on ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. 15. PLAIN JANE TO THE RESCUE (1982/Hong Kong, 86 min., color, slapstick comedy/Golden Harvest) DVD (in Cantonese with English subs.) Dir.: John Woo. Cast: Josephine Siao, Ricky Hui, Michael Lee. Hong Kong comedy can be real hit or miss with me. Josephine Siao is pretty funny here as a “Plain Jane” who botches one job after another and fends off Ricky Hui’s sincere romantic entreaties. There is a plot, but the script keeps going off on tangents, some of which are quite baffling. Culminates in a pile-up in a traffic tunnel with dozens of damaged cars and a large number of extras, so there was a real budget here. Director Woo makes a cameo as an unemployed director. I’ll stick with HARD-BOILED. 16. “Trouble with Father” (aka “The Stu Erwin Show”) (1950-55/U.S., 107 min., b&w, TV sitcom) DVD. Stars: Stu Erwin, June Erwin, Sheila James, Willie Best. Hollywood veteran Stu Erwin (PALOOKA) and his real-life wife are saddled with two fictional daughters and a suburban lifestyle in this amusing sitcom that also gave black comic actor Willie Best his last role. Martin Milner (“Adam-12”) shows up also. Season 1/#9: Father Gets into the Act (Dec. 16, 1950) Season 1/#41: Barbecue (July 28, 1951) Season 3/#10: Leave It to Stu (Jan. 16, 1953) Season 4/#25: The Pearl Necklace (April 6, 1955) 17. TAOISM DRUNKARD (1984/Hong Kong, 90 min., color, kung fu comedy) DVD (in Cantonese with English subs.) Dir.: Yuen Cheung-Yan. Cast: Yuen Yat Chor, Yuen Shun Yi, Yuen Cheung-Yan. Wild mix of Taoist folklore, kung fu, mysticism, sex comedy, youthful romance and slapstick with lots of Yuen brothers. A Drunken Taoist monk tries to recruit a male virgin kung fu expert to participate in a ceremony when the evil Old Devil comes back from somewhere and wreaks havoc. Numerous subsidiary characters and subplots really clutter things up, but it moves so fast and has so much action, it’s hard to complain. And also hard to explain, given the frequently bungled subtitles. November 12, 2011 18. “Genshiken” (2004/Japan, color, anime otaku comedy-drama TV series/Bandai) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.) Vol. 2: eps. 5-8. Dir.: Takashi Ikehata. An animated look at Otaku (fan) culture in Japan, focusing on a college club devoted to the “study of visual culture.” I’m also reading the manga that it’s based on. I’m familiar with the American version of this subculture, so it’s pretty instructive to see how it plays out in Japan, esp. when one seemingly normal, or “mundane” girl gets swept up as she follows her boyfriend into it. 19. “Sergeant Bilko” (U.S., b&w, TV sitcom) Stars: Phil Silvers, Paul Ford, Harvey Lembeck. VHS Season 3 /#23: Bilko the Art Lover (March 5, 1958) Season 4 /#1: Gold Fever (Sept. 23, 1958) Season 4/ #7: Bilko’s Big Woman Hunt (Nov. 5, 1958) Season 4/ #36: The Weekend Colonel (June 17, 1959) I taped these episodes off TV Land 15 years ago and finally watched them. Every time I see a “Bilko” episode I’m convinced this was the greatest sitcom ever made. Neil Simon co-wrote three of these eps. Alan Alda guest stars in one and Paul Lynde and Al Lewis turn up in others. I had more laughs watching these eps. than I did watching anything else for this challenge so far. November 13, 2011 20. NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK (1941/U.S., 70 min., b&w, comedy/Universal) VHS. Dir.: Edward Cline. Stars: W.C. Fields, Gloria Jean, Franklin Pangborn. Fields’ last starring role. One of the most anarchic comedies made in Hollywood during the golden age. The studio indulged Fields as long as they could use the film as a vehicle to promote the singing of Gloria Jean, who was being groomed as a new Deanna Durbin. (It didn’t take.) Ends with a stunt-filled high-speed car ride that’s as good as anything found in silent comedy. “Ya big Kabloona!” 21. NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH (1941/U.S., 90 min., b&w, comedy/Paramount) DVD (Bob Hope Thanks for the Memories Collection) Dir.: Elliott Nugent. Cast: Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, Edward Arnold, Willie Best. Based on a play about a man who makes a bet that he can tell the truth—and nothing but—for 24 hours, but awkwardly rewritten for Hope, who doesn’t fit the character at all. Profoundly unfunny. At least there are three hot babes on hand: Paulette Goddard, Helen Vinson and Rose Hobart. If only they’d made R-rated sex comedies back then--Goddard would have been the queen of ’em. November 14, 2011 22. MY LITTLE CHICKADEE (1940/U.S., 83 min., b&w, comedy/Universal) VHS. Dir.: Edward Cline. Cast: W.C. Fields, Mae West. Screenplay by Fields and West. Mae, as "Flower Belle Lee," is kicked out of a western town, so she "marries" Fields, a traveling peddler ("Cuthbert J. Twillie"), while en route via train to the next town, so she can have a little "respectability" while planning her next move. Fields is funniest in his various efforts to consummate the "marriage." Fields is in peak form, but West is somewhat watered down, a victim of the Production Code (which was instituted in stronger form in 1934, partly as a response to the sex-drenched exploits of West). Still, it's a fun movie, although not up to Fields' best efforts of the era: YOU CAN'T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN, THE BANK DICK, and NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK. November 15, 2011 23. PROJECT A (1983/Hong Kong, 105 min., color, historical action comedy/Golden Harvest) DVD (in Cantonese with English subs.) Dir.: Jackie Chan. Cast: Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung. Peak Jackie with all sorts of amazing stunts and fight scenes and action setpieces. Set in the early 20th century. Jackie’s a coast guard member and Yuen is a police officer and, after some initial rivalry, they join forces to fight pirates. The plot’s not so great. PROJECT A II is so much better written. November 16, 2011 24. PROJECT A II (1987/Hong Kong, 106 min., color, historical action comedy/Golden Harvest) DVD (in Cantonese with English subs.) Dir.: Jackie Chan. Cast: Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung, Rosamund Kwan. Much better plot and script than PROJECT A, with many great stunts, fight scenes and farcical comedy. Jackie’s success fighting the pirates in PROJECT A gets him a promotion and new assignment to clean up a corrupt precinct in Hong Kong. Complicating matters is the presence of a group of revolutionaries from the mainland and imperial agents sent to stop them. Plus, the remaining pirates from the first film are out to get revenge on Jackie. One of Jackie’s best, although Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung are absent from it. [Break for hospital stay] November 19, 2011 25. PILLOW TALK (1959/U.S., 102 min., color, romantic comedy/Universal) DVD (part of the Doris Day and Rock Hudson Comedy Collection from Universal) Dir.: Michael Gordon. Cast: Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall. A very funny romantic comedy and the second best (after LOVER COME BACK) of the Day/Hudson comedies. Beautifully written and produced, with plenty of laughs. 26. ROAD TO MOROCCO (1942/U.S., 83 min., color, comedy/Paramount) DVD (Bob Hope Thanks for the Memories Collection) Dir.: David Butler. Cast: Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Anthony Quinn. I’ve always considered this the second best of the “Road” comedies (after ROAD TO UTOPIA), but I didn’t laugh so much this time. It’s amusing and a good source of light entertainment, but you have to really like the stars to appreciate it. Dorothy Lamour is probably at her most gorgeous here and they give her lots of great costumes. 27. THE PALEFACE (1948/U.S., 91 min., color, western comedy/Paramount) DVD (Bob Hope Thanks for the Memories Collection) Dir.: Norman Z. McLeod. Cast: Bob Hope, Jane Russell. I love westerns and am grateful for the chance to include some in this challenge. (CAT BALLOU’s up next.) Bob Hope’s hapless coward persona is inserted into a straight western plot, with Jane Russell’s gun-toting Calamity Jane assigned all the rough heroics. She’s great and she plays off Hope very well. But there are few real laughs. It’s basically just amusing, which is good enough, I guess. SON OF PALEFACE, the sequel, was much better. November 20, 2011 28. THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998/U.S., 117 min., color, stoner-crime comedy/Universal) VHS. Dir.: Joel Coen. Cast: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi. The Coen Brothers’ comic sensibility is one that an individual viewer either shares or doesn’t share. I tend not to share it, although I always find their films interesting. This is definitely a unique movie and I can’t really criticize it, even if I didn’t always appreciate where it was going. Bridges is great and I certainly understand why this is a cult film. 29. BOWERY BOMBSHELL (1946/U.S., 65 min., b&w, Bowery Boys series comedy/Monogram) VHS (taped off TCM). Dir.: Phil Karlson. Cast: Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall and the Bowery Boys. When Sach is falsely accused of a bank robbery, the Boys set out to get the goods on the real culprits. Slip & co. masquerade as visiting gangsters in the film’s climactic setpiece to fool the head of the real robbery gang (Sheldon Leonard). Director Karlson went on to make a number of top-ranked crime dramas in the 1950s-70s (99 RIVER STREET, BROTHERS RICO, WALKING TALL) and his touch is evident here in the urban/street details. Too bad the script isn’t a bit more clever. 30. MYRA BRECKENRIDGE (1970/U.S., 94 min., color, counterculture comedy-fantasy/20th Century Fox) DVD. Audio commentary by Raquel Welch. Dir.: Michael Sarne. Cast: Raquel Welch, John Huston, Mae West, Rex Reed. Bizarre Hollywood/counterculture mash-up based on a very good book by Gore Vidal. This was originally rated X and then re-rated R. Filled with tons of old film clips and more than a few one-time Hollywood greats in the cast as well as a young Farrah Fawcett. Welch’s commentary is pretty critical of the film, but a fun listen for the most part. November 21, 2011 31. CASANOVA’S BIG NIGHT (1954/U.S., 86 min., color, historical comedy/Paramount) DVD. Dir.: Norman Z. McLeod. Cast: Bob Hope, Joan Fontaine, Basil Rathbone. I consider this Bob Hope’s best comedy. Hope’s patented coward persona is inserted smoothly into a lavish historical setting, with lots of funny lines, while everyone else plays it straight. Hope plays a lowly tailor’s apprentice who's forced to impersonate Casanova at the Venetian Court. Vincent Price has a cameo as the real Casanova. Hal Kanter, who died a couple of weeks ago on Nov. 6 at the age of 92, co-wrote this with Edmund Hartmann. 32. CAT BALLOU (1965/U.S., 96 min., color, western comedy/Columbia) DVD. Dir.: Elliot Silverstein. Cast: Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin, Michael Callan. Lightweight western about a prim rancher’s daughter who becomes an outlaw. Skin-deep characters and flimsy plot. Lee Marvin won an Oscar for playing drunken gunslinger Kid Shilleen, but it’s all schtick. He never creates a particularly interesting or compelling character. Same for the rest of the cast. 33. YOU’RE IN THE NAVY NOW (1951/U.S., 93 min., b&w, naval comedy-drama/20th Century Fox) VHS (taped off Fox Movie Channel). Dir.: Henry Hathaway. Cast: Gary Cooper, Jane Greer, Eddie Albert. Slice-of-life piece about a ramshackle ship with an inexperienced captain and crew in the early days of WWII being assigned to work with an experimental steam engine. An amusing piece about men teaming together to make do in the midst of crisis. Notable for a supporting cast that includes the film debuts of Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, and Harvey Lembeck. 34. American Masters: “Woody Allen: A Documentary, Part 2” (2011/U.S., 85 min., color, documentary about comedy filmmaker/WNET) PBS broadcast. Dir.: Robert B. Weide. Covers the later decades of Woody’s career, from the early 1980s to today. I’ve become less and less a fan of Woody over the years and this documentary doesn’t help, since his shallowness and narcissism consistently take center stage. Part 1 was on the night before, but I forgot to watch it. November 22, 2011 35. IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD (1963/U.S., 181 minutes, color, epic treasure hunt comedy /UA) VHS (2-tape set) Dir.: Stanley Kramer. Cast: Spencer Tracy, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, and an all-star comedy cast. What better excuse than a Comedy Challenge to pull out one of my all-time faves and give it another whirl after nearly 20 years? This time, I focused on the stunt players and action scenes. It’s quite underrated in that regard. Plus, I watched the tribute documentary that came on the tape. (See #38a) November 23, 2011 36. POKÉMON DIAMOND AND PEARL (2007/Japan, color, anime fantasy TV series) DVD Vol. 2: eps. 9-12 (English-dubbed) Dir.: Norihiko Sudo. #9: Setting the World on Its Buneary #10: Not on My Watch Ya Don’t #11: Mounting a Coordinator Assault #12: Arrival of a Rival Dawn gets a powerful but needy new Pokemon called Buneary, that has a crush on Pikachu. She and Ash enter a major Pokemon contest and meet a new rival, Zoe. Villainess Jessie enters the contest in disguise. I love this show. I try to watch episodes for every challenge where it’s eligible (TV on DVD, Animation, Sci-fi, Comedy, Make Your Own Challenge). 37. DORAEMON: NOBITA’S GREAT DEMON (Doraemon: Nobita no Daimakyo) (1982/Japan, 91 min., color, anime sci-fi-comedy-fantasy-adventure/Toho) VHS (in Japanese, no subtitles). Dir.: Hideo Nishimaki. “Doraemon” is an extraordinarily popular long-running Japanese animated sitcom about a robot cat from the future who helps out Nobita, a hapless Tokyo schoolboy. The annual movie spin-offs tended to emphasize action and adventure in imaginative settings. Here the kids go to Africa to help a dog prince get restored to the throne of a lost dog empire deep in the jungle. Pretty wild. 38a. “Something a Little Less Serious: A Tribute to ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World’” (1991/U.S., 61 min., color, documentary/MGM) VHS. Dir.: Ronnie Johnson. Stanley Kramer is interviewed, as are a bunch of actors from the movie, including Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Edie Adams and Jonathan Winters, all interviewed separately. And other personnel, including stunt coordinator Carey Loftin and special effects supervisor Linwood Dunn. I would like to have heard more from those two. 38b. The Colgate Comedy Hour, with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis (U.S., 51 min., b&w, TV comedy-variety show) Season 3 / #1 (Sept. 21, 1952) Guest star: Rosemary Clooney. Martin & Lewis were much more freewheeling on live TV than they were in movies. This is the closest you’ll get to filmed versions of their famous nightclub act. Not always that funny, but still quite a novelty. Norman Lear is a co-writer of this episode. 39. YOU’RE TELLING ME (1934/U.S., 66 min., b&w, comedy/Paramount) VHS. Dir.: Erle C. Kenton. Cast: W.C. Fields, Joan Marsh, Kathleen Howard. Low-key Fields vehicle and a remake of his own (and better) silent film, SO’S YOUR OLD MAN (1926). He plays a disgraced, drunken inventor whose stock in his small town rises when a princess he met on a train comes to visit and claims to be an old friend of his. The already short film is padded out with his famous golf routine at the end. “Now stand back and keep your eye on the ball.” 40. TALES OF A EUNUCH (1983/Hong Kong, 89 min., color, historical kung fu comedy/Shaw Bros.) VCD (in Mandarin with English subs.) Dir.: Hua Shan. Cast: Wong Yue, Gordon Liu, Ku Feng. Oddball Hong Kong mix of swordplay, bloodshed, sex comedy, court intrigue, and lots of kung fu. Wong Yue (DIRTY HO) plays a gambler who takes the place of an assistant to a blind eunuch in the imperial palace and becomes a sparring partner of the Emperor (Gordon Liu). The hero's mother works in a brothel! I didn’t always understand the plot but I found the whole thing moderately entertaining. November 24, 2011 41. MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947/U.S., 96 min., b&w, holiday comedy-drama, 20th Century Fox) Seen on TCM Thanksgiving cablecast. Dir.: George Seaton. Cast: Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Edmund Gwenn, Natalie Wood. More drama than comedy, although Gwenn’s Kris Kringle does make you smile a lot. (He did win the Oscar for this.) The courtroom scene in which they “prove” that Kringle really is Santa is priceless. I used this to kick off the Holiday Challenge also. 42. MY YOUNG AUNTIE (1981/Hong Kong, 119 min., color, kung fu comedy/Shaw Bros.) Dragon Dynasty DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.) Dir.: Lau Kar Leung. Cast: Kara Hui Ying Hung, Lau Kar Leung, Hsiao Hou, Gordon Liu. Kara plays a young widow who has to pass on her late husband’s property to his brother, who’s now technically her nephew despite being much older than her. Another brother seeks to snatch the deeds and lots of kung fu is involved. Could have used a little more "fish out of water" comedy and a bit less kung fu. The last 30 minutes is all action and could have been cut down. But it’s probably Kara’s best role. November 25, 2011 43. American Masters: “Woody Allen: A Documentary, Part 1” (2011/U.S., 110 min., color, documentary about comedy filmmaker/WNET) VHS, from PBS broadcast. Dir.: Robert B. Weide. I watched Part 2 on Monday, so I caught up to Part 1 today. It covers his early life and stand-up career and all the films up to STARDUST MEMORIES. Interesting stuff, esp. his return to his old Brooklyn neighborhood. 44. PENELOPE (1966/U.S., 97 min., color, caper comedy/MGM) TCM cablecast. Dir.: Arthur Hiller. Cast: Natalie Wood, Ian Bannen, Peter Falk, Dick Shawn. Amusing, lightweight comedy about a rich wife in New York who engages in petty thievery and then robs her husband’s bank. Her psychiatrist (Dick Shawn) gets involved, as does a dogged police detective played by Peter Falk, foreshadowing Columbo. Jonathan Winters has a cameo as a lecherous professor, making him the third cast member from IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD to show up in this (after Shawn and Falk). Wood is terminally cute and helps put this over. 45. MYRA BRECKENRIDGE (1970/U.S., 94 min., color, counterculture comedy-fantasy/20th Century Fox) DVD. Audio commentary by Michael Sarne. Dir.: Michael Sarne. Cast: Raquel Welch, John Huston, Mae West, Rex Reed. Watched it again, this time with director Sarne’s commentary. He tells quite a different version of a story told by Welch about a missing dress. Sarne is pro-Mae West and anti-Raquel. He trashes original author Gore Vidal and claims some kind of gay conspiracy against him and keeps harping on that. Stick with the Welch commentary. 46a. ”The Colgate Comedy Hour, with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis” (U.S., 53 min., b&w, TV comedy-variety show) Season 5 / #11 (Dec. 19, 1954) Guest star: Vera Miles. Director: Bud Yorkin. The sketches include one where Dean and Vera Miles adopt Jerry. It’s not that funny. I like the musical numbers best because they’ve got the Nick Castle Dancers. Dean and Jerry do a duet, with plenty of soft-shoe, of “Every Street’s a Boulevard (in Old New York).” Jack Benny is a surprise guest star but doesn’t do much. 46b. ”Monty Python’s Flying Circus” (1969/U.K., color, sketch comedy TV show/BBC) VHS. Watched two random episodes from the series' first year. 47. BANANAS (1971/U.S., 82 min., color, comedy/UA) VHS. Dir.: Woody Allen. Cast: Woody Allen, Louise Lasser, Carlos Montalban. This used to be my favorite Woody movie. I laughed a lot when I first saw it in a theater 40 years ago, but less every time I saw it afterwards. And zero laughs this time. His stuff really diminishes over time. I watched this to get in at least one 1970s comedy for this challenge. November 26, 2011 48. LOVER COME BACK (1962/U.S., 107 min., color, romantic comedy/Universal) DVD (part of the Doris Day and Rock Hudson Comedy Collection from Universal) Dir.: Delbert Mann. Cast: Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall. This war-of-the-sexes comedy set on Madison Avenue doesn’t hold up as well as I thought it would. Maybe I’ve seen it too many times over the years. PILLOW TALK, seen last Saturday for the first time in decades (see #25), was funnier. Still highly recommended if you haven’t seen it. 49. MY YOUNG AUNTIE (1981/Hong Kong, 119 min., color, kung fu comedy/Shaw Bros.) Dragon Dynasty DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.) Audio commentary by Andy Klein and Elvis Mitchell. Re-watched with audio commentary track. Klein seems to think he’s listening to it in Cantonese when the DVD only has a Mandarin track. (The original R3 DVD from Celestial had both.) I suppose if you’re new to these films the commentary will prove informative, for the most part. It clearly wasn’t aimed at me. Besides, both guys get their facts wrong at different points, Mitchell more often. 50. SHERLOCK JR. (1924/U.S., 45 min., b&w, silent comedy) VHS. Dir.: Buster Keaton. Stars: Buster Keaton, Kathryn McGuire. Keaton plays a small-town movie theater projectionist with dreams of becoming a great detective. He even dreams himself into the movie that’s playing and solves a robbery there. The plot is all over the place, but it’s got some great stunts including a ride by Keaton on the handlebars of a motorcycle through all sorts of traffic and terrain. November 27, 2011 51. POKÉMON BLACK AND WHITE (2011/Japan, color, anime fantasy/gaming TV series) VHS (taped off Cartoon Network): eps. 29-32, English dubbed. Dir.: Norihiko Sutou. #29: Cottonee in Love #30: A UFO for Elgyem #31: Ash and Trip’s Third Battle #32: Facing Fear with Eyes Wide Open I started watching this show during the Animation Challenge in August. I should have been watching these eps. earlier in November instead of some of the stuff I did watch. I could have watched the UFO episode for the Sci-Fi Challenge in July as well. Great stuff. 52. “Genshiken” (2004/Japan, color, anime otaku comedy-drama TV series/Bandai) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.) Vol. 3: eps. 9-12. Dir.: Takashi Ikehata. This volume includes the great bit where Saki, the one hot chick in the club and the one with the least tolerance for otaku behavior, does cosplay for the first time, as punishment for starting a fire that burned up much of the club’s manga collection. In another episode, she fends off a high-school girl’s attempts to hit on her boyfriend. Funny stuff and spot-on in its treatment of this Japanese subculture. 53. DOUBLE CROSSBONES (1951/U.S., 75 min., color, pirate musical-comedy/Universal) DVD (Pirates of the Golden Age Movie Collection/Universal) Dir.: Charles T. Barton. Cast: Donald O’Connor, Helena Carter, Will Geer. Lighthearted pirate adventure with musical comedy star O’Connor doing song-and-dance-and-comedy amidst all the swashbuckling. O’Connor is entertaining, but Bob Hope was much funnier at this kind of thing (see THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE). November 29, 2011 54. HAS ANYBODY SEEN MY GAL? (1952/U.S., 89 min., color, nostalgic Americana comedy/Universal) DVD (Rock Hudson Screen Legend Collection/Universal) Dir.: Douglas Sirk. Cast: Rock Hudson, Piper Laurie, Charles Coburn. In the 1920s, a rich man prepares to leave his fortune to the children of the girl who rejected his love 40 years earlier, but he decides to check them out first, incognito, as a boarder. Very clever comedy with a flapper era setting. Coburn’s great in a role that would have been perfect for W.C. Fields a decade earlier. November 30, 2011 55. A VERY SPECIAL FAVOR (1965/U.S., 105 min., color, romantic comedy/Universal) DVD (Rock Hudson Screen Legend Collection/Universal) Dir.: Michael Gordon. Cast: Rock Hudson, Leslie Caron, Charles Boyer. Only in the bizarre alternate universe of Hollywood sex comedies of the 1960s will you find a plot in which a Frenchman (Charles Boyer) recruits an American stud (Hudson) to deflower his estranged psychoanalyst daughter (Caron). Larry Storch plays a cabbie who says to Hudson, “You talkin’ to me?”—11 years before TAXI DRIVER. At one point, Hudson dresses a girl up in drag to make it look to Caron like he’s running off with a man. There’s a perverse, cruel charm at work here which makes the whole ridiculous thing quite entertaining. 56. GREETINGS (1968/U.S., 88 min., color, counterculture comedy) VHS. Dir.: Brian De Palma. Cast: Robert De Niro, Gerrit Graham, Jonathan Warden. Anarchic ‘60s counterculture comedy that’s fitfully amusing, but serves chiefly as a snapshot of the era. Dominant subtexts involve the JFK assassination (which happened only five years earlier) and the Vietnam War. De Niro spends much of the film trying to get women to disrobe for his “peep art.” At one point, De Niro harangues someone at the entrance to the Induction center who responds, “You talkin’ to me?” 57. FANTASIA (2004/Hong Kong, 99 min., color, fantasy comedy) DVD (in Cantonese with English subs.) Dir.: Wai Ka Fai. Cast: Cecilia Cheung, Louis Koo, Lau Ching Wan, the Twins. Typical hit-or-miss everything-but-the-kitchen-sink Hong Kong comedy. The lead character is modeled on the lead character played by Josephine Siao in PLAIN JANE TO THE RESCUE (1982 – See #15). Here the character is a wizardess from Hogwarts Academy who goes back to 1969 Hong Kong to grant someone three wishes, with all sorts of mishaps resulting. Lots of special effects. The pop-singing duo, the Twins, play the Chopstick Sisters and are quite cute. As HK comedies go, I tend to prefer Jackie and Sammo. 58. POKÉMON BLACK AND WHITE (2011/Japan, color, anime fantasy/gaming TV series) VHS (taped off Cartoon Network): eps. 33-36, English dubbed. Dir.: Norihiko Sutou. #33: Iris and Excadrill Against the Dragon Buster #34: Gotta Catch a Roggenrola! #35: Where Did You Go, Audino? #36: Archeops in the Modern World More fun stuff including a lengthy flashback to Iris’ girlhood in the Village of Dragons and one ep. devoted to restoring a million-year-old Pokemon bird to life. Wild Card (seen November 26): 59. POKÉMON ZOROARK MASTER OF ILLUSIONS (2011/Japan, 95 min., color, anime fantasy movie) DVD (English dubbed) Dir.: Kunihiko Yuyama. I think this is the 13th Pokemon movie. It's not actually a comedy, although the regular Pokemon TV series is. The movies tended to be more action adventure. Very beautifully animated, although I had problems with the storyline. The villain's motivation was pretty abstract. Official Checklist: Spoiler:

Re: The First Ever "November Comedy Challenge" |-List Thread-|
I'm in. No goal though; I watch what I watch.
11/01/2011 1. Treasure Inn (2011) - DVD - First Time Viewing - Two bumbling constables travel to Treasure Inn with their lady loves to recover a priceless white jade statue. I don't know if anyone will be uttering it's name in the same breath as Dragon Gate Inn in 20 years, but it was alright, especially considering it's a comedy. Spoiler:
11/02/2011 2. Blondie (1938) - DVD - Dagwood stumbles and bumbles through work and domestic crises in the first Blondie movie. They made these movies for 12 years and had pretty much everything nailed from the beginning. Penny Singleton is a sight to behold. Spoiler:
11/03/2011 3. The Last Boy Scout (1991) - DVD - Early Shane Black buddy action/comedy involving murder, mayhem, professional football and sports gambling. Bruce Willis back when he had hair or at least he was pretending he had hair. Just a fun movie if you don't mind the often brutal violence. Spoiler:
11/05/2011 4. Orders are Orders (1954) - DVD - First Time Viewing - An Hollywood film crew descends on an unsuspecting British Military base. Military comedy, with a baby faced Peter Sellers in a small role and a blink and you miss him scene featuring young 'Donald Plesance'. Sid James does a very passable American (East Coast, I think) accent. A pleasant way to spend 74 minutes. Spoiler:
11/06/2011 5. Support Your Local Sheriff (1969) - DVD - A cowboy drifting towards Australia takes the job of sheriff for a lawless frontier town. A great, great Western comedy with James Garner, Jack Elam and Joan Hackett. Spoiler:
6. A Slight Case of Murder (1938) - DVD - Marco (Edward G. Robinson), a bootlegger gone legit after the repeal of prohibition, sees his first day in his summer home turned upside down as his daughter's state trooper fiancée, former 'associates' and bank creditors all descend on him. Based on a play by Damon Runyon. They knew how to make comedies in the Thirties. 11/07/2011 7. Black Sheep (1996) - DVD - A lovable dufus makes life complicated for his politician brother. I liked some parts of it better than others. Spoiler:
11/08/2011 8. Lover Come Back (1961) - DVD - It's Doris Day, Rock Hudson and Tony Randal in a sly Sixties romantic comedy. Consider it one of the templates for Mad Men. Spoiler:
11/09/2011 9. Hue and Cry (1946) - DVD - First Time Viewing - A group of kids foils the plot of a criminal mastermind. Early-ish Ealing comedy, very much a boys adventure tale. 11/11/2011 10. Over the Hedge (2006) - DVD - A raccoon under a deadly deadline suckers a bunch of innocent foragers into helping him amass a red wagon full of junk food. A few good belly-laughs, but mostly full of hearty chuckles. The sound track by Ben Folds is good. Spoiler:
11/12/2011 11. Genevieve (1953) - DVD - The adventures of two couples during the London to Bristol vintage car rally. Classic British comedy. Kay Kendall was great. Spoiler:
12. Doctor Detroit (1983) - DVD - An English professor must rescue four 'damsels' in distress from by the evil Mom by assuming the identity of Doctor Detroit. It's alright, but you see glimpses of what it could have been. It would have been cool if they had made The Wrath of Mom. Spoiler:
13. The Twelve Tasks of Asterix (1976) - DVD - First Time Viewing - Asterix and Obelix must perform twelve tasks set by Cesar to win the Roman Empire for the Gauls. Really fun story with some good old school animation. 11/13/2011 14. Balls of Fury (2007) - DVD - A washed-up ping-pong champion is recruited by the FBI to infiltrate the mysterious Feng's organization by means of a secret ping-pong tournament. Amusing parody of Enter the Dragon, mixed in with a few sports cliches. Spoiler:
11/14/2011 15. Trick Shinsaku Special 2 (2010) - DVD - A magician and scientist visit a small Japanese village during a Love Festival and end up in the middle of a handful of mysterious murders. Another screwball murder mystery with Yamada and Ueda. 11/15/2011 16. Winners and Sinners (1983) - First Time Viewing - DVD - A group of ex-cons go into business together and stumble into a counterfeiting plot. HK comedy gold; they really don't make them like this anymore. Spoiler:
11/16/2011 17. The Libeled Lady (1936) - First Time Viewing - DVD - When a heiress sues a newspaper for libel, the newspaper tries to arrange for a scandal to derail the suit. High wattage star power, with plenty of laughs. Spoiler:
11/18/2011 18. Who Was That Lady? (1960) - DVD - A husband caught in a compromising position by his wife creates an alibi with a friend that quickly spirals out of control. Could view this movie has a bridge comedy between they styles of the Fifties and Sixties. Spoiler:
11/19/2011 19. Mom and Dad Save the World (1991) - Mom and Dad are kidnapped while on a vacation by Dim-witted evil Emperor Todd of the planet Spengo and save the world. Amusing bit of nonsense. Spoiler:
11/20/2011 20. Community - 'Advanced Gay' (2011) - Hulu Community - 'Studies in Modern Movement' (2011) - Hulu Community - 'Documentary Filmmaking: Redux' (2011) - Hulu The Goodies - 'Goodies Rule - OK?' (1975) - DVD 11/21/2011 21. Goomer (1999) - DVD - First Time Viewing - Interstellar loser/slob Goomer crash lands on an inhabited alien planet that he hopes will be his meal ticket. Would make a good double feature with Wizards or Heavy Metal. Spoiler:
11/23/2011 22. 48 Hrs. (1982) - DVD - A prisoner is furloughed by a cop that needs him to track down a suspect. Eddie Murphy's first movie, still a lot of fun. Spoiler:
23. Another 48 Hrs. (1990) - DVD - Hammond and Cates team up again when the notorious Iceman sends killers after them. Ok sequel to 48 Hrs. Spoiler:
11/24/2011 24. Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Attack of the Giant Leeches (1992/1959) - DVD - White trash get sucked dry by giant blood lusting leeches. Not exactly a Turkey Day marathon, but the best I could manage. 11/25/2011 25. Yogi Bear (2010) - DVD - First Time Viewing - Yogi's hijinks endanger Jellystone Park after the City's Mayor sets his rapacious sights on it. Anna Faris is wasted and Yogi sounds too much like Dan Akroyd, but Timberlake's Boo Boo is dead-on. Not so much wasted space as squandered opportunity. Spoiler:
11/25/2011 26. The Muppets (2011) - Theater - First Time Viewing - A pair of brothers inspires Kermit to re-unite the Muppets to save the Muppet Studio from an evil billionaire. Good to see the Muppets back in something worthy of them. Spoiler:
11/28/2011 27. Darkwing Duck (1991) - DVD - 'Darkly Dawns The Duck-Pilot Part One', 'Darkly Dawns The Duck-Pilot Part Two', 'Beauty and the Beet', 'Getting Antsy' Spoiler:
28. Cop Out (2010) - DVD - First Time Viewing - A pair of cops chase after a baseball card worth 80,000 thousand dollars. Uneven, but it had it's moments. Spoiler:
11/30/2011 29. The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) - DVD - Inspector Clouseau must save the world from the lunatic Dreyfus. Possibly my favorite Pink Panther movie. Certainly the most outlandish, and yes cartoonish. Plays like a Bond spoof too. Spoiler:
30. Girl Shy (1924) - DVD - First Time Viewing - The Poor Boy meets the Rich Girl and they fall in love but he must stop her from marrying a cad. Great Harold Lloyd film with an incredible chase/race for the climax. Spoiler:
