Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread
I didn't get to watch anything the first couple of days but was able to get some good watching in today. I rewatched Wet Hot American Summer which I first watched in college while trying desperately to make grain alcohol palatable with things from the fridge. Also, I watched some Mary Tyler Moore and the Lego Star Wars film which was brilliant.

November 4 – TGIF – Workplace comedy
I was having a little trouble coming up with something for this, all I could think of was Office Space or The Office. But then after Googling "Workplace comedy" I realized it doesn't specify Office, which opens up this category quite a bit. I'm going to watch Empire Records and/or Used Cars. Which ever one I find first. |

I've gotten warmed up so I'll keep going. These guys aren't necessarily comedians/comics but they all made their share of comedies:
Jack Lemon, Tony Curtis, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall, Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, Danny Kaye, Jean Arthur, Rosalind Russel, Irene Dunne, Loretta Young, Katherine Hepburn. And there's plenty I haven't listed, but pulling from what I've mentioned should diversify the check list nicely for next year. Of course, you can always watch IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD (1963) and get a zillion comedy stars in one sitting, including Buster Keaton, Joe E. Brown, Leo Gorcey, Zasu Pitts, the Three Stooges, William Demarest, Stan Freberg, Edward Everett Horton, Ben Blue, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson and cameo appearances by Jerry Lewis and Jack Benny--and I didn't even name the main stars! |

How about Sid Caesar?

You just have to report the list thread.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread
I stumbled across another source for searching for sub-genres of films:
http://www.flickchart.com/Charts.aspx If you go to the main page it seems that you have to create an account. At least I couldn't find any way around that requirement. But a google search turned up the link above which gets you to the search page with filter attributes available. |
Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread
So "Sex/teen comedies"...
Is this intended to be three types from which to choose - "sex" (The Graduate, Some Like it Hot), "teen" (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Breakfast Club) or "sex/teen" (American Pie, Revenge of the Nerds) *or* JUST one - "sex/teen"? I'm thinking just one - "sex/teen" but looking for clarification so as to widen the search should I so chose. |
Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread
I wanted to suggest adding a genre mix into the checklist for next year comedy/horror, action/comedy, etc.

Just fyi for everyone, a few days ago I started adding links to the theme nights in the main post. They are mostly just random best of list's but it should help with clarification. I only have up till tomorrow linked but I plan on finishing it tonight. After 9 days in a row of work and spending any free time the past two nights trying to fix my car I'm looking forward to a whole bunch of comedy tonight and tomorrow for my day off. |

IMDB - this is an advanced search using "feature", "comedy", and parody as a keyword. FlickChart - with just "parody/spoof" as the filter item.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread
My viewing today took a major hit (at least based on the Horror challenge). My wife and daughter had a yard sale this morning so I got to watch the kids... pretty much all day. My wife *just* got home about 30 minutes ago. The grand kids wanted to play video games instead of watch TV. I'd looked forward to a day of Three Stooges, Little Rascals, and Laurel & Hardy shorts (all of which they love too)... Oh well... Guess I'll have to hit it harder tonight.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread
For teen/sex comedy, I watched NIGHT OF THE LIVING DORKS, a German teen sex/horror comedy. Takes place at Friedrich Nietzsche High School where Coach Stalin presides over the Rugby team. This being a German comedy, even the parents and teachers talk about having sex, not just the horny teens. Really bizarre, but I enjoyed it. It was one of the items I didn't get around to watching during the Horror Challenge.

Another checklist suggestion for next year: Watch a film and its remake.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread
I watched Straight Talk which was quirky fun and worth to $5 to get a surprisingly brilliant BR and The Starter Wife miniseries which I had watched with my Nana when it was first on television. Debra Messing is funny in The Starter Wife but some of the implications were disturbing. If only financial ruin could be averted by selling some chairs... If only it took buying a beach-side house with your divorce settlement to "mature" enough to have a relationship... Despite emotional platitudes and sagely nods of the head, no one seemed to learn a goddamn thing, opting to stay ensconced in the system that initially fucked up their lives. Still, it had some really funny moments.

And another for the theme nights.
I find myself spending more time scheduling upcoming viewings and keeping my lists up to date rather than actually watching the movies, which is why I usually don't bother with the checklists (i.e. Horror/Holiday challenge) and just watch the movies for pleasure. But I hope to change that with this challenge :) |

This implies you can substitute 2 hours of live comedy TV shows for any theme night as many times as you want. Are there still nights with 2 hours of uninterrupted comedy programming? Because of commercial glut and "bugs" I gave up regular watching of live TV a few years ago and don't keep up any more. |
