Image Entertainment's "Midnight Madness Collection"/reissuing OOP Anchor Bay titles

[UPDATE (9/23/11): It's being discovered that most of these reissues are bare-bones, and in some instances, even full-screen. I feel it's my duty to point this out up front. I don't want anyone to get too eager and regretfully sell off their Anchor Bay DVDs.]

Image Entertainment has many upcoming reissues of former Anchor Bay titles. Right now their "Midnight Madness Collection" seems to focus on films from the 80's. As you'll see, a few of these were starting to become scarce.

Here's a direct link to Image's catalog sorted by newest release date if you want to keep up on future additions.

And Image's "Midnight Madness Collection" press release (8/10/11) .

At least you'll no longer have to track down OOP titles like The Stuff or House. Here's hoping Image will release some really hard to find titles from other decades; it would be great if they reissued the Hammer titles like the Quatermass films.

Nice! I used to own House and House II years ago and like a fool I sold my copy!

Luckily, I bought most of these way back when and held on to them, although I need to get Children of the Corn and Creepshow 2. Still, I was hoping this April Fool's prank might become a reality:

Funny thing about House is, a few months ago when it became harder to find, I found & reserved the lone copy at a B&N store halfway around town. Now my whole quest seems futile.

Lately I have been searching like hell for Road Games, hoping Image reissues that. The only affordable copy is the R0 Australian PAL DVD. I hate discovering films I want to see after they've gone OOP or aren't available on R1 (this is the case with several Aussie films I want to see after watching Not Quite Hollywood).

I hope these Image reissues are more aesthetically pleasing than Lionsgate's ex-Anchor Bay titles.

On a similar note, Image is releasing Basket Case & a few HG Lewis titles on Blu-ray. Sept 27th.

I just saw the angel movie collection listed on amazon for 13.49. I was worried, I wouldn't have a chance to buy that one. It's cheaper now than the anchor bay one.

That Amazon listing says the new "set" is on one disc, versus Anchor Bay's original three. Not that these are classic films, but that does give me pause . . .

I hope amazon got the release information wrong. If not I'd rather have them drop the third movie and just release the first 2 movies. Maybe there is a bd version that they havent released the information yet.
I really only loved the first movie.

I see that they also have a "Reform School Girls"/"Fraternity Vacation" double feature coming out November 1, 2011 for $9.98.

Oh no... it looks like Image is not porting over the special features from the AB discs? The web site is listing more DVD info now, and a number of the titles only say "Special Features: Trailer". Movies like CHUD I only own because of the audio commentary! It's 100x more entertaining than the film itself.

Well, I guess we'll have to lighten up on Lionsgate, at least they ported over the damn special features.

Oh God, I went through hell getting the AB release after it went OOP. It's now one of my most prized films in my collection.

From that list it looks like Image has picked up only the New World Pictures titles. The Entity is 20th Century Fox. I Saw What You Did is Universal.

Shout! Factory just released two of the titles that Anchor Bay licensed from Fox, Visiting Hours and Bad Dreams, perhaps The Entity will follow? I didn't even realize it was OOP. I bought it during an Anchor Bay sale at DDD in 2007, interesting movie.

Still need to check out The Legend of Hell House, it's been on my list. I'll have to examine it for the horror challenge.

Race With the Devil/Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, copyrighted by Fox, were also reissued by Shout Factory.

It seems so far, this is how it's been with ex-Anchor Bay titles:

Studio Canal -> Lionsgate
20th Century Fox -> Shout Factory
New World Entertainment-> reissued by Image Entertainment (which I deduced from my Heathers & Hellraiser DVDs)

My question, then, is: who currently holds the Hammer copyright in the USA that's sitting on the Quatermass films?

It's a great film, imo. Still amongst the creepiest horror films I've seen. They recently covered this film on Trailers From Hell: http://trailersfromhell.com/trailers/785

I don't know who now has the dvd rights to the Fox Hammers but the deal does not include Fox. AB used british prints with the european title if changed for the U.S.(Devil Rides Out vs Devil's Bride). I can't recall for sure, but believe none of the dvds have the Fox logo at beginning of film. The deal may have been done directly with Hammer. When Quatermass And The Pit shows up on tv it's with the U.S. title Five Million Years To Earth and begins with the Fox logo.
Quatermass Experiment and Quatermass 2 were originally released in U.S. by UA with titles changed to The Creeping Unknown and Enemy From Space. MGM/UA released the first one on vhs but used a british print with british title. AB released Q2 on DVD using a british print.
It seems early on the other studios locked in a forever deal with the Hammers they distributed in the U.S. but by the early 70s were just doing a one time distribution deal. Twins Of Evil and Hands Of Ripper were released by Universal in the U.S. then let go. Horror of Dracula was originally Universal, don't know how WB got it. Some that AIP distributed are no longer with MGM/UA. Other british titles that were distributed by AIP have shown up on DVD with european prints on labels other than MGM/UA because they still retain rights to the U.S. version. Horrors Of The Black Musuem, Black Sunday and Black Sabbath are a few.

I really do not know why something like Children of the Corn or Hellraiser is getting rereleased again....this is why DVD collecting is so frustrating.

Not to derail from the original discussion, but it seems that some of you may not be aware that MGM Limited Edition MOD is releasing "The Quatermass Xperiment" sometime soon:

Amazon has had a Quatermass MOD for pre-order, didn't know it was MGM though.

What's going to be different about House ? 2 Commentaries instead of just the one ? Or maybe a behind the scenes documentary....

I'm going to guess nothing. If anything, it might be bare-bones.
