Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine. This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, omputer, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would generally be allowed. If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here. Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces. As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count. Movies count as 1 entry each. TV shows count according to length as they are aired on TV(including commercials):
If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show. This is based on the theory that the run time for a 30 minute show is between 22-24 minutes. For mini series, do count each "day" that it aired (assuming that each day was a 2 hour block). For example, Animated Dune: The Mini Series, would it be: 63. Animated Dune: The Mini Series - Part I 64. Animated Dune: The Mini Series - Part II 65. Animated Dune: The Mini Seriies - Part III This is based on the assumption that each episode is movie length aka 2+ hours with commercials. If it's shorter than that, just count each part as a regular TV show. When listing TV shows, keep them together for one entry. Example: 65. South Park:episode name / Futurama: episode name / Futurama: episode name How do I list TV shows and other short stuff if I don't have enough for an entry? At the bottom of your post/list, keep a Temp TV section. Add stuff there until you get enough for an entry. Watching the movie/show with the commentary will count as an entry. Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count. Number your lists and if you want, show what days you watched whatever it was you watched Example August 1: 1. Snow White 2. Toy Story 3 July 2: 3. Fantastic Mr. Fox I'm stealing the prize determination from the exploitation challenge. Names will be randomly selected from http://www.random.org/lists/ The top people, one prize per person, get something. There's 4 ways to get an entry:
The List Thread will be a couple weeks before the challenge begins. 3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting. |

Incidentally, the Library of Congress has a digital collection called "Origins of American Animation." You can find it on their website, or you can download it (free) in iTunes here.

I'm not sure how much longer these things will be free, but iTunes has been offering a lot of free TV episodes this summer. There's an assortment of Kids' Shows that includes some animated fare and another collection of free anime episodes here. I didn't see anything really mandatory in any of it, but everyone's taste is different. Plus, I wouldn't know a "good" anime if it came with a label. For all I know, it's the giveaway of the century.

Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
I'm looking forward to this one again, hoping to attack my unwatched pile better then last year. I will be gone the first week but visiting someone with kids, so maybe I will get a few things in :)

Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
Does the mini series rule only count for parts that are feature length? I ask because I have the first two GI Joe mini series, and they were in 5 parts, but each part was only a run time of 30 minutes.
|
Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
I'd count it as 5 separate episodes. I'll clear up the mini-series a little more to explain that it's for more of the episodes that are 2+ hours.
|
Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
What about movies like Avatar that are partially CGI? I saw the rule about the whole movie not needing to be animated, and that is why I am asking. Just in case I don't get to it in the sci fi/fantasy challenge
|
Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
I'd be surprised if the majority of the film wasn't comprised of computer animation, so I'd easily allow it.

Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
Last year, I believe I just counted G.I. Joe: The M.A.S.S. Effect as one entry. The DVD I have of it presents it as a singular story with only one opening title sequence and one end credits, so it plays like a feature. I could have counted the fifth part toward a second grouping of TV content, but figured it made more sense that way.
Anyway, I'm in. In all likelihood I'll focus more on TV than feature films. Last year, I won two volumes of ThunderCats I still haven't opened. (They were both halves of Season Two and I only recently acquired the first half of Season One.) For the TV on DVD* Challenge in January, I watched She-Ra, Princess of Power Season One, Volume One and am thinking about making my way through Season One, Volume Two for the Animation Challenge, and then tentatively finishing off the series with Season Two in January. One question: is there consideration for something like The Pixar Story documentary to count for this challenge? Or would that be more appropriate as a wild card selection? |
Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
I'd count it under the documentary rule.

Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
I'm browsing through the list thread from last year and I see Godzilla movies on someone's list. Are Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, etc considered animation under suitmation? Just curious how they would count as animation.
|
Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
Yeah, I wouldn't have counted that if asked, or at least for this year if I did approve it but I don't see why I would have. Wearing a rubber suit isn't really what I had in mind in terms of animation.

Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
List thread should be up tomorrow for this insanely popular challenge.

Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
Is there any interest in starting the animation challenge a day early so you can count titles that are animated sci-fi/fantasy?

Personally, I think the ~7 hour coverage of midnight to dawn is enough. Starting every Challenge on the 31st seems overkill. |
Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
Whoah, I just got deja vu from reading the same questions and answers in the sci-fi thread then the animation thread
I was scrolling through Netflix's streaming stuff to see whether I wanted to keep it and found a lot of the superhero stuff I've been missing out on (watched Black Panther and Astonishing X-Men). I might dig into some more for this challenge before I decide. |

A similar question can be posed at the end of every month, as there are always titles that could count for both Challenges.

In fact, I wonder if Motion Comic might not eventually be worth adding to the Checklist. It's still to soon now, I think, but they're becoming more prolific and accessible. Which reminds me, there are also a few Batman Motion Comics that you can order as Made-on-Demand DVDs from the Warner Archive Collection. There's Batgirl: Year One, Batman: Mad Love and Batman: Black and White. I think the first two might be on the same DVD. If not, then one of them is on a DVD with another Motion Comic that I can't think of right now. Warner is also having a $5 off sale on superhero themed MOD DVDs through the weekend so anyone who might want to try to get those in time for this challenge might consider checking it out. |

Motion comic added to quite possibly the easiest checklist in existence. |
Re: 2nd Annual August Animation Challenge - Discussion Thread
I got an old Japanese Golgo 13 VHS tape that appears to be a motion comic based on shots of color drawings from the manga. Now I have a good excuse to watch it.

I don't think I'll be able to watch as much next August as I'll (hopefully) have a real job, but am either going to try and watch Disney's entire film catalog (mostly canon stuff) or a Matt Groening Marathon, of The Simpsons and Futurama.
But yeah, a Matt Groening Marathon is off, since I did that during May's "Make Your Own Challenge" Challenge, and I dunno if I'm up for a month of nothing but Disney like I contemplated a year ago. I definitely think I'll get around to revisiting Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond, and might tackle some of the Rocky & Bullwinkle: The Complete Series set, as well as some Walt Disney Treasures Sets. I'm actually about to reorganize my collection at the start of August, so I'm sure I'll find some things I hadn't thought of and pop them in instead, lol. --- If anyone is looking for recommendations as to what to watch, here's a few recommendations of things I've watched lately and that are coming out on DVD soon:
