The worst defective problem was the director's cut disc in the Close Encounters 3 disc set, I've had 4 copies, every one freezes then jumps to a later scene in the film.
I had the same problem with the bluray of CE3K, changing the bluray player NOT to playback the disc in 24fps fixed the problem.

I have Thief, it can't hold a candle to the DVD transfer of WB's Outland w/ Sean Connery. Really, it's a disgrace. The transfer is worse than the VHS tape it was copied from. -kd5-

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

I bought a copy of "Borat" when it was first released and the DVD inside the case was a pirated disc with the title written in sharpie (and the "R" in "Borat" was backwards!)

Returned it for a replacement but got the same pirated disc again. Did this three more times and kept getting more pirated discs. I finally just tossed it in the trash and decided to wait for the Blu Ray.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

The only problem I have ever had was with a copy of "Of Mice And Men" (1992). I bought a copy from Best Buy, and it completely pixilated and froze about 20 minutes in. I took the copy back, and a second copy did the exact same thing. A third copy finally worked.

What store was this ? I've never heard of getting a bootleg from an actual store.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

I remember buying GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE, a Dreamworks release, at a store, and finding that the subtitles were actually Close-Captioning, with sound effects described and everything. I had to send the disc to Dreamworks and wait for a replacement copy by mail. I really don't like doing that. They should just send a replacement copy to anyone who can prove they bought one and not demand the problem disc be returned first. I don't like paying for a copy and not having it while waiting for a replacement that may never come.

It was a joke, son, it was a joke. That's the way BORAT discs were made--to look like bootlegs.

And, yes, I know of plenty of stores that have openly sold bootlegs, but usually of foreign films like kung fu films, whose rights holders (if they still exist) have no lawyers or representatives in the U.S.

Did a different Gargantua win on the other disc?

Outer Limits season 2 gave me endless grief. I exchanged copies several times and finally gave up and got a refund. Very sad as I love that show.

I have that DVD and it a joke disc bootleg and it say copyright logo and say "FOX" from the right of the disc (also that what Ash Ketchum say) and check it out

Q: Is my DVD a bootleg copy?

A: No, it's supposed to look like that.

It is a parody of the old "Memorex" ads that used to say "Is it live? No, it's Memorex".

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

Let's see...

My copy of Tron stopped playing all together after a couple years. It was fine when I first purchased it, but suddenly it would not load on any of my players (DVD rot?). I ended up tossing it, which really sucks given the high resale value that disc had just before Tron: Legacy was released.

I ordered a used copy of Strangers With Candy: The Complete Series from SecondSpin.com. I'd watched all but the last disc and they played fine. But as my luck would have it, the final episode skipped over a good 5 minutes. I got a refund and they let me keep the set, but this still bothers me.

The Media Blasters DVD of Hell High loses a good 4 minutes of footage in the middle of the movie due to an authoring error. Since it's a crappy movie anyway, it wouldn't be that big a deal - but it also cuts short the awesome Joe Bob Briggs commentary in the process.

I'm sure I could think of other problems I've had, but those are the ones that spring to mind.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

Can't believe I'm the first to post this: I was absolutely heartbroken when it was announced that the original versions of the Star Wars movies would be non-anamorphic laserdisc transfers, and I refused to buy them. A little while after they came out, I Netflix'd one of those "bonus" discs just to see how bad it would look on my 46" LCD, and it was even worse than I imagined. I was practically sick to my stomach that these groundbreaking films had been given this treatment, and to this day it makes me ashamed of George Lucas that he could approve the release of something so shoddy.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

Not to knock anyone or everyone, but that's the worst kind of experiences y'all can come up with, y'all gotta be shittin' me?!!??!!??!!? Hows about finally landing not one, but 3, sealed copies of the lonf out of print treasure "FM", only to hear that it's had a long history of not playing at all. No way of telling of course, everything is sealed, so to check it out, I had to bust open, at the time, they were bringin' fat coins, I had to open all three copies, and of course not-a-one dare played! i felt like puttin' my fist threw the wall! Then i go to a Coconuts (long shuttered since) and find two(!!!) copies of Mickey Rourke's, "The Last Ride", check out the prices for them, even then they was heavy freight!, anyways, I done pick one up, attempt to shake it to see if it's still secured, and it's a 'floater', my heart sinks! O.K. one down, please let me walk away with at least one of these beauts in my grubby hands, I'm thinkin to myself! I done pick up the other, don't even gotta shake it noways, it rolls around all by gravity like, yet another 'floater', no wonder they was still on the shelf! Now That's Something To Cry Over, I Can't Even Believe Some Of The Other Posts I Done Read! CRIMONY! ZOINKS, and a DOUBLE ZOINKS!!!

My heart aches for you, pal. That FM experience sounds just awful--definitely beats out all the other stories here.
Re: "floaters"--I've taken a chance with several floaters over the years--in cases where they were the only copies of hard-to-find discs. They all played fine when I got them home...so far.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

I just attempted to remove one of those clear Hollywood Video labels from a used DVD I bought off of the Amazon Marketplace. I've only purchased five DVDs that had this label on them in the past and four of them ended up having a crack in the disc. This was despite taking extreme care in removing the huge sticker.

Well, I tried taking off the sticker from this latest movie and half of disc artwork peeled off with it! I didn't even try that hard, it just came off like there wasn't anything bonding it to the surface of the disc. And sure enough, the disc was cracked as well. It was a cheap Full Moon movie that only cost a penny (shipped, with Prime) but I've never seen this happen before.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

Do DVD player horrors count? My wife and I rented a house in Florida that came with TV and an RCA DVD/VCR unit. I brought along an album of about 50 flicks and TV disks--mostly clean and known to work on my gear at home. The RCA unit flat out refused to play 20 of them, and another 10 or so locked up somewhere deep into the program. If I had owned that miserable machine, it would literally have been smashed to bits on the driveway.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?

I had a DVD that raped and killed my cat, then plea bargained and was on the streets in less than a week.
