While I admire the pleasant look of an orderly shelf, the massive numbers of variant packagings I own make this less and less important or even possible.

With my DVD shelves, almost every third title is sized slightly differently than the ones next to it. And this trend trend is even continuing into the BD world, with 25 or so of my 400 titles being non-normal packaging.

I used to keep all variant packaging in separate places, but decided that that was the silliest thing I'd ever done.

I can respect that. My main concern is the height of the cases, no matter the width, mixing the shorter and thinner blus in with the dvds would drive me nuts haha.

That said my big boxsets are all together, blus and dvd

The keep cases are all mixed together, alphabetically. Ditto for the tv on disc. Blue ray steelbooks are sperated from dvd steelbooks for some reason.

I use the Benno CD towers (now called DVD towers) from Ikea to house all the slim jewel cases. I don't have a picture of my shelves, but here's a link to the Benno cases:

At less than 8" width, you can fit them in any size space, putting as many or as few as you need next to each other. Each shelf can hold up to 30 slim cases though I usually don't go past 29 to leave a little wiggle room. At 12 shelves, you can potentially store up to 360 DVDs in one unit.

Yeah, I still have all my multi-film cases and boxsets in a separate place. Tried putting them alphabetically by first film title, but either way it's easy to forget that I own the other titles in the sets.

But actually, I'm fairly OCD/confused/neurotic about organization and re-arrange how I have my collection all the time.

I would honestly love to see that top ten list.

I lead a fairly boring live, but have done more than my fair share of funny/stupid things that would probably entertain most. Most of them involve failures with women and/or alcohol.

I used to have to do this simply because the shelves I had wouldn't allow for anything much higher than a regular DVD case. Even a simple box holding a few keepcases would sometimes be too tight to fit in where it should go and would end up on top. Last year we picked up the Besta shelves from Ikea, bought two more shelf pieces for each, and now I can fit just about any kind of packaging, even something like my Evil Dead 2 tin.

Re: Do you mix your blu-rays with your DVDs?

I have my BD's and HD DVDs intermingled with my SD's. I alphabetize everything by genre so they all go together. I don't purchase or have any interest in any of the collectible packages. In fact I shy away from that stuff because I have an active dislike for them. I guess that's the extent of my desire to have my cases as close as possible in size.

I don't have an active dislike for the unique packages, but I really haven't been drawn to any of them so far, either. Target's folding character cases have all underwhelmed me (with the exception of the U.S.S. Enterprise, which just "whelmed" me). None of the "mask" cases have appealed to me, either. I do like Digibooks, though I live in fear that the hubs will break.

It doesn't bother me that cases aren't uniform. It does bother me, though, that so many of them are so generic.

That sucks, especially since the upgrade is so cheap now.

Mix em. I want to keep them in the same genres/alphabetical.

I haven't bought a blu ray since I got my PS3 a year ago. But if I ever do, I will mix them with regular dvds in alphabetical order.

Ha. I gotta agree here. I used to mix mine together when I only had a few HD-DVD's and Blu-ray's, and only mixed them when it was for my director's chronological sections. However, I can't even bring myself to do that anymore. They look much better seperated -- it's easier to access High Definition content when I want it -- and it makes me feel, mentally, as if I'm encouraging studios to continue to put out Blu-ray releases of my favorite films.

I know that last bit is odd, but it's how I feel, and that's the truth.

I'm planning an Ikea run in the next week or so. Have totally filled all of my hodgepodge bookcases and shelving, and plan to go crazy and fill a few more walls with whatever looks to work best at Ikea.

I apologize to those who have seen me make this mini-argument in other threads, but I think one could argue that it's actually cheaper to "go blu-ray".

Players are routinely found for ~$60, they work fine with your current TV (even SD), they play all your DVDs (possibly better than your DVD player), and quite often BDs are actually cheaper than their SD counterparts. So in time you could pay back the cost of the player and start making a profit. Minor and quibbling argument versus the other benefits of BD of course, but somewhat valid nonetheless.

Re: Do you mix your blu-rays with your DVDs?

I keep mine together. As someone already said, a lot of my cases are already non standard, so the blus don't stand out and it's easier to find when they're together. Granted, I don't have too many yet, but it doesn't bother me that they're a little shorter. Most the of the blus I have are combos, so they have the dvd in there anyway.

When I had more VHS left (before upgrading), I had them mixed in with my with dvds, because it's the movie I want to watch, not the format, so I think I just transferred that attitude to blu rays.

Re: Do you mix your blu-rays with your DVDs?

I keep mine all together. Even in the same cases. I just bought Kingdom of Heaven and The good The bad & the Ugly blurays last week. I have the 4-disc KOH already so i took out disc 4 and slipped the bluray in that spot. Did the same with my Good, Bad Ugly 2- disc set. Took out disc 2 and slipped the bluray in there instead. All of the special features are on the bluray anyway and I like the standard cases better. Works like a charm.
And the Bluray's that I have only bluray's of, i just keep them in their own bluray cases and keep them mixed with the other Standards that i have. i must say though it looks a bit funny like that but that's just how it is.

Re: Do you mix your blu-rays with your DVDs?

I go one step further. I mix my VHS, DVDs, CD/DVD combos, Blu-rays, HD-DVD, and even my Digital Download Copy backups all together in alphabetical order on my shelves. It makes it super easy to find everything and it's nice to have titles in their proper order. Like my "28 Days Later" Blu next to my "28 "Weeks Later" DVD, my "Return Of The Living Dead" DVD next to my "Return Of The Living Dead 2" & "Return Of The Living Dead 3" VHS, and so on...
I've had them separated before but I always seam to go back to everything alphabetically.

I loved the Ikea shelves... then they went and changed the colors slightly and still called them the same thing. I wasn't very happy to find that out (after a purchase and subsequent return).. so in the event of expansion, I'll have to figure something else out one day. I'm still saddened months later that they changed the colors and I can't get more of the same (I've got probably close to ten shelves around of the same color, different sizes, from Ikea).

Sorry... on topic: I own one Blu-Ray currently (Toy Story 3). It sits on top of the DVDs. I intend to get a player this month when I find a good sale (granted I know nothing about them yet..) and possibly go to Blu exclusively.. not sure yet.

Re: Do you mix your blu-rays with your DVDs?

Separate. ALWAYS.

I don't own any BR/DVD combo packs yet but when Vampire Circus comes out I will...and the DVD will get a nice case all by itself in the DVD section.

And personally (since the topic kind of got into this) I detest any gimmick packaging that doesn't come in a standard size case. Lenticular covers etc are fine...but funny cases like batman masks and alien/simpsons heads....blech. Hell, I'm not even a big fan of slipcovers/box sets.
