Re: WB Archive Lon Chaney Films
The Warner Archive burnt DVD-Rs I bought all played but they are still overpriced for what you get. For example, "The Man Who Loves" (1928) with John Barrymore uses a telecine version of the movie, probably the same version TCM uses when its airs this movie. There are several reports posted about the problems people had playing their Warner DVD-R of this movie. Most buyers don't complain when the DVD-Rs they buy from WBShop has 3:2 pulldown problems or just don't play. These buyers eat the loss and never buy another Archive DVD-R.
On the packaging, Warner Archive warns that these discs will probably not play on computer DVD players or anything but a DVD player. These DVD-Rs have no real menu, no closed captioning nor subtitles. They have ten minute chapter stops and sometimes a movie trailer and anamorphic video.
Finally, these Warner discs lack that one feature that once was the minimum for movie DVDs from a major studio, that feature being that the discs are pressed DVDs. In creating a master used for pressing, the manufacturer almosts eliminates the production variations that can lead to defective DVDs.
Warner Archive DVD-Rs may be the only game in town for niche movies with low selling potential, but to be part of this this game, the buyer gets overcharged.
