Once upon a time, audiences went to the theater with greater regularity but they weren't exposed to nearly the same kind of diversity of movies that today's audiences has access to through things like movie channels on TV, DVD rentals and streaming, etc. Look at this challenge alone, and how many different movies have been watched to date by this group. If we were to all convene on Halloween night and see a new horror movie, we would be insanely difficult to please because we'd have each come to the film having already seen variations on the same theme from across different eras, even different continents.
Someone would have to have basically seen everything we've seen and then more stuff beyond that, to mine for material and then add to that their own individual take on it to have a fighting chance of winning us over. Their chances increase dramatically if they instead sacrifice trying to surprise us with something new and instead try to offer us the familiar; if there's a zombie, we expect its head to be shot. If there's a vampire, it better get a stake through its heart. And the cute blonde lounging in her panties during the opening credits better be mauled in the shower later. It's lazy, yes, but it's got a much greater chance of pleasing us than trying to convince us that you've got something innovative.

BTW, still in? Feel free to PM me if that's more than you want to divulge publicly.
Watched Freddy Vs Jason again, and I never understood any of the hate for it. It's the best story anyone could have come up with to get those two together, and it has everything an unapologetic Freddy and Jason fan like myself could possibly want (and more). I beleive it easily ranks as one of the top three sequels for both franchises. And it's just plain fun.

And Tenebre is great stuff. I'm hoping to squeeze it in during the challenge.

I'm in your camp Mister Peepers. My loves are SF, SF-"B" movies from the 50's/60's, Classic Horror (generally nothing produced after the early 70's), and Classic Comedy with the occasional Classic Costume Drama/Adventure or animation thrown in for good measure. I watch 95% alone. There are a *few* genres my wife'll watch with me, mostly mystery/dective and *some* comedy, but my true loves are all viewed solo. I'd be thrilled if she would just give a few a chance.

I kid. I've never had any luck getting overseas (except for TDY, of course). That's all my "Dreamsheet" is stacked with, but it seems I'll be CONUS bound forever. 'Tis okay, Amazon shipping is much faster here!

Anyone have the Poultrygeist Blu-ray? Just curious if it has the same features as the DVD? I completely forgot that it was out on Blu until I was thinking of watching some Troma for this challenge.
One of the features on the regular DVD, making the monsters or designing the monsters or something like that, is my Troma DVD debut. I'm in it and filmed part of it. Not sure why they chose that clip for the dvd, we sent them another featurette of actually making stuff that was a lot better, but it's Troma so of course they chose the kinda boring 8 minute clip. But I might need to pick up the blu-ray if I'm on it too.

I'm really enjoying the Working with a Master special feature on the Masters of Horror DVDs - just watched Deer Woman, picked up Jennifer, Pelts, and Family also.

I advise not eating while watching Jennifer OR Pelts (not sure which is worst). In fact, you may want to fast 12 hours prior.

As fun as it was being overseas, over there you are literally raped by the ISP and cable company. Cable is easy to describe. You're two weeks behind on anything and no matter how bad anyone thinks they're being ripped off in the states with high prices, it's much worse there.
I had some sort of expanded type lineup, up to the 60s or so channel wise. The price was around $70. Then came the weird cable packages. You want AMC? That was something like an extra $20 per month. The thing is, it also came with the Playboy channel, turning into Spice at night.
This means someone at the company said, married men want porn but how can they get their wives to agree to it? Bob, what do you think? Sir, how about we package it with a normal channel, like AMC. Great thinking Bob! Joe Airman will say, honey, can we get the American Movie Classics channel? Sure dear. Boom, he just got porn. Women don't know how to work the remote, so they'll never stumble upon it.
When it came to internet. We got unlimited dial-up for $30, or so, a month. There were a couple of companies on base offering it, some local American thing run out of the USO and AT&T. AT&T had the feature of you not having an easy time being able to connect during peak hours. The other one was much, much better and cheaper. Why people didn't just switch to that, I'll never know.
AT&T had the answer. They got a contract that allowed them to be the only ISP provider for on-base. None of this was known to us for about a week. What happened is that one weekend we couldn't get on the internet. It seems that after AT&T got their deal, they were able to have guys to take all the gear from the other ISP over the weekend when they were closed.
Shortly after this, AT&T announced that the price would increase and we'd also be limited to 90 hours of connection per month. It was explained to us, after someone said other companies in the US offered unlimited service, that they couldn't really do that and they were all going out of business
This is the sort of stuff you can deal with overseas if they don't let everyone live off base if they want to. It also makes people dumb and go crazy. We had a bunch of new guys get kicked out for underage drinking and and a few others in our squadron became alcoholics. Up until the last year I lived there, we had cans of soda in the chow hall. Then it changed to fountains only. The story being told, and I had someone argue it with me, was that the cans were a class 1.4 explosive because the cans could blow up in the plane at high altitudes.
There were a dude that covered himself with peanut butter on Saturday nights, mess up inventory so bad that he'd have to stay after to fix it for an additional 9 hours. Not just doing it once but doing the same thing the very next week. Crazy marriages, electric shocks, missiles being towed by sleeping people, etc. This was my waking horror for many years.
It's like living in Bizarro World. I think a lot of it may have just been my squadron because at times I'd work at another one for a week or more, and they all seemed relatively sane. There's still no way I would ever reenlist again and risk dealing with all that crap again.

Just finished A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010).
It wasn't as bad as I heard it might be but it felt very pedestrian. I liked the Origins of Freddy, sort of towing the line between being vague and blunt at the same time.
Didn't like Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy. Also didn't like how defined the dream/reality sequences seemed to be in this film. Whereas the first film blurred them pretty heavily, I felt like the Director was like screaming "DREAM SEQUENCE" or "REALITY" at me before every cue.

I'm not exaggerating. Argento is one of my favs as well, but WOW did he lose his mind with those. They are good and well made, though. But I never want to see them again.

well I had gotten a second wind here and watched three movies today, Omen II and Saw I & II. okay, so I'm NOT throwing in the towel (as I had threatened to do), I'm just a little irked that I haven't even broken past twenty movies.

Wow, Mister Peepers, I think reading your post qualifies as a Wild Card entry...
That would severely impede my Challenge participation. Think I’ll stay here.
It's funny you mention this, as I currently teach Hazardous Materials Preparation /Inspection courses to certify and prepare hazmat on all forms of transport (but mainly military and commercial airlift). First time I heard that one! (And it's not true, as I'm sure was the point you were arguing)
I've heard horror stories, especially from Ramstein (I'm a 2T2, Air Trans, they can be a wild bunch). I think I've escaped most of the madness due to the fact I was already married with kids for a couple years before I joined. And now, 13 years later, things are still pretty stable (with the occasional TDY here and there).
Thanks for the service you did, though!

Just another obnoxious reminder that the trivia question is tomorrow. Probably later in the afternoon. It's easy this time around, randomly drawn and you'll have the usual 24 hours to PM the answer.

Showtime were assholes though, since Argento actually had to cut some of the more extreme gore/sex from the 'Jenifer' episode. (thankfully the cut scenes are in the supplement section of the DVD)

I didn't mean to start out going over everything but once you get started, there's always just one more thing that's nuts over there.

Just finished Mad Monster Party? (1967) claymation flick with the kid... some of the humor is corny but it was a lot of fun. I'm surprised this doesn't get more attention with ALL the universal horror monsters thrown in.
By the way, I'm amazed but Dreamworks Animation made a zombie penguin movie?!?

What Ben said if my thinking as well. I much prefer Manhunter fwiw, as much as I love Anthony Hopkins, I think Brian Cox was a better Lector.
Just watched it for yesterday's theme. Great film.
