Here's a sampling of volume 5: AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL CARTOON REVOLUTION VOL 05 - $10.00 Life is complicated. So having cartoon characters help explain things make everything easier, as you’ll discover with this 5th volume of Something Weird’s wacky-with-a-purpose Industrial Cartoons series! Easy Does It (1946; color) is a 25-minute sales pitch for Stokely Foods – with a surprising degree of lechery attached. Joe works in Mr. Fuddle’s grocery store, which is on the verge of closing because they don’t sell the brands people want. Worse, the bank is about to foreclose on the store unless Mr. Squeeze, the hilariously sleazy bank president, marries Fuddle’s daughter Ann. While Mr. Squeeze is busy seducing her, Joe gets a visit from a little magical man named Easy who uses a flying time machine to take Joe back 60 years to show him the birth of Stokely Foods. Easy also introduces Joe to a giant on a cloud, and happy tomatoes getting washed and cooked in the modern Stokely plant (which, all things considered, is borderline disturbing). End result: Fuddle’s store becomes stocked with Stokley foods which the customers love! And Ann? Why Joe races to the Justice of the Peace just before Squeeze is about to marry her and beats the crap out of him! Directed by HUGH HARMAN. Man of Action (1955; color) is the story of an “average man in an average home” whose average town becomes a slum overnight! And it’s all the fault of Satan! Yup, Satan encourages people to let their homes get run down until the neighborhood falls apart and the community is full of “juvenile delinquency, alcoholism, and crime!” Unless, of course, citizens fight back! How? With bureaucracy! Look Who’s Driving (color) gives us cartoon characters that drive like psychotic idiots and behave like crazed children on the road. Until they get into an accident and die. Then they float around like ghosts. Tell ‘Em the Facts (color) has Gulf Oil calmly reminding us why their gasoline is better than anyone else’s gasoline. And it’s all because of their “balanced volatility” and “antiknock value.” You betcha. The Soldier’s Hour (color) was made for Army personnel in charge of re-enlistment as a way of stemming the tide of soldiers leaving after their hitch is up. The trick is to zero in on certain kinds of soldiers… like former factory workers. But, hey, stay away from farmers. Avoidable Carrier Accidents (1949; color) defines stupid sailors who crash their planes on aircraft carriers as the same stupid sailors who do dumb things on leave. Ah, the joy of stupidity. The Adventures of Junior Raindrop (color) is the story of cutesy raindrops who… well… go wrong once they get to earth. Because of forest fires or badly managed land, raindrops like Junior become “hoodlum raindrops” (!), get involved “with gangs” (!!), and turn into “gangster” raindrops (!!!). Wow. My Government U.S.A. (color) explains government to a cartoon caveman named Ugh. That Ugh is impressed is no surprise since Ugh, after all, is a primitive man. American Industrial Cartoons 7 DVD Mega Set http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...v_hires3-1.jpg Challenge Starts August 1st at 12am EST Challenge ends September 1st at dawn Rules Movies/TV shows should be labeled Animation from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine. This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, CGI, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would be allowed, as would all of the Star Wars movies. What isn't allowed are films/shows that use touches of CGI, or other forms of animation, that don't directly influence the film/show. The Others has a large amount of CGI landscaping during the opening credits as the car drives through the mountains but it doesn't really have anything to do with the film. Changeling is another example. While it has some scenes with CGI people in the background, that's all it amounts to in the story. If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here. Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces. As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count. Movies count as 1 entry each. TV shows count according to length as they are aired on TV(including commercials):
If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show. This is based on the theory that the run time for a 30 minute show is between 22-24 minutes. For mini series, do count each "day" that it aired (assuming that each day was a 2 hour block). For example, Animated Dune: The Mini Series, would it be: 63. Animated Dune: The Mini Series - Part I 64. Animated Dune: The Mini Series - Part II 65. Animated Dune: The Mini Seriies - Part III When listing TV shows, keep them together for one entry. Example: 65. South Park:episode name / Futurama: episode name / Futurama: episode name How do I list TV shows and other short stuff if I don't have enough for an entry?At the bottom of your post/list, keep a Temp TV section. Add stuff there until you get enough for an entry. Use the size tag for smaller text size for the time you watch 90, one minute cartoons. Watching the movie/show with the commentary will count as an entry. Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count. Show what days you watched whatever it was you watched Example August 1: 1. Snow White 2. Toy Story 3 July 2: 3. I'm not sure how much longer these things will be free, but iTunes has been offering a lot of free TV episodes this summer. There's an assortment of Kids' Shows that includes some animated fare and another collection of free anime episodes here. I didn't see anything really mandatory in any of it, but everyone's taste is different. Plus, I wouldn't know a "good" anime if it came with a label. For all I know, it's the giveaway of the century.

August 1 - Started off with Saturday night with a Robot Chicken my Tivo recorded. Sunday began with shorts off youtube before I started feeling nauseous and went to bed where I checked out 3 Disney films. 1. Robot Chicken: Tell My Mom / Gertie the Dinosaur / Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs / The Tell-Tale Heart / The Big Snit / Rooty Toot Toot / The Man Who Planted Trees 2. The AristoCats 3. The Prince of Egypt 4. Mulan August 2 - Still sick. Shorts on breaks at work and Disney films after work. 5. Felix in Hollywood / More / Vincent / Tsumiki no ie / Vinni-Pukh / Day and Night / Hedgehog in the Fog / Winnie the Pooh Goes Visiting / Winnie the Pooh and a Busy Day 6. Robin Hood August 3 - Still feeling the effects of being sick but I managed to finish the rest of this before starting Ninja Scroll and Falling asleep 7. The Last Unicorn August 4 - Watched shorts and finished Batman, which I started yesterday, at work during lunch and breaks. Got a little more of Ninja Scroll in. 8. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 9. Balance / Rejected / Partly Cloudy / The Revenge of a Kinematograph Cameraman / The Snowman / Das Rad / Dimensions of Dialogue / Robot Chicken: President Hu Forbids It August 5 - Start Mary and Max at lunch and watch a little more of Ninja Scroll. Started Tarzan at home. August 6 - Finally finished Ninja Scroll. I finally started getting into it towards the end. I'd seen enough of the Alice movie from walking by when the kids were watching it but I finally sat through it all. After finishing Mary and Max, Cat City bored me to tears and The Little Fox seemed good until the end where it seemed to go off in another direction. Got through most of Tarzan. 10. Ninja Scroll 11. Neco z Alenky 12. Mary and Max 13. Cat City 14. Vuk: The Little Fox August 7 - Finished up Tarzan. Persepolis was good but then it went downhill from there. Waltz had it's moments, 5 Centimeters didn't have any. I think I've seen Prince Achmed, or at least some of it before. Mind Game felt like a million years. It finally started to get better with the last two movies. 15. Tarzan 16. Persepolis 17. Waltz with Bashir 18. 5 Centimetres per Second 19. The Adventures of Prince Achmed 20. Mind Game 21. Millennium Actress 22. When the Wind Blows 23. Ponyo August 8 - Another non-workday to grind through a bunch of stuff. Some things were decent but overall it was average at best. Animal Farm was the best of the day and Waking Life wins the award for "Most Pretentious". The bar scene is the only thing memorable about it and even then, it didn't make much sense. 24. Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem 25. Macross - Do You Remember Love 26. Pinchcliffe Grand Prix 27. Waking Life 28. Animal Farm 29. Fritz the Cat 30. Gulliver's Travels August 9 - Busy day at work but I found time to watch dinosaurs and then finish up Emperor, when I got home. 31. The Land Before Time 32. The Emperor's New Groove August 10 - Started off the day with cataract surgery in my right eye. 33. Asterix and Cleopatra 34. The Princess and the Cobbler August 11 - A day of movies at home. 35. Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius 36. The Adventures of Mark Twain 37. Gay Purr-ee 38. Song of the South August 12 - Wow, this is really trying to be a Disney movie. 39. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron August 13 - I've only seen one other of these and the plot seems to be the same. A kid drives the big robot to attack the bad robot thing at the beginning, then he doesn't want to do it again but the government wants him to. Then towards the end, there's another attack and the kid gets the courage to pilot the robot, not for the government but for himself. 40. Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone August 14 - A full animation marathon. I also realize I'm running out of animation that I haven't checked at icheckmovies.com and I'll be through the rest of what I have sometime around Wednesday. My plan is simple for this challenge-I plan to watch all of the animation on my DVR, watch some movies with animation or stop-motion and watch some classic animation from the 30's to 70's. I had planned on not doing the checklist but I'm hooked. I definitely plan on finishing it.

Almost all are first-time viewings. AUGUST 1 1. Squidbillies Season 4 "Lerm"/ "The Liar, the Bitch and the Bored Rube"/ "The Fine Ol' Solution"/ "Anabolic-holic"/ "Confessions of a Gangrenous Mind"/"The Big Gay Throwdown"/"Atone Deaf"/"God's Bro" - Borrowed Volume 3 from a friend. Terrible artwork and barely funny, as usual. I keep expecting this show to get better; after 4 seasons, I should give up on that notion. At least the music is pretty good, relatively speaking. AUGUST 2 2. Clash of the Titans (2010) - I didn't hate this CGI fest, and I didn't love it. Over-dramatic to the point where it bored me. Why do so many modern filmmakers want us to think that every scene of their films are the greatest moments we could ever hope to witness? Guys, go study composition and try a few shots with the cameras locked down (start by watching a Kubrick film)...and stop the neverending pompous music. I'm getting tired of these 200-million-dollar cartoons. AUGUST 3 3. Squidbillies Season 4 "Reunited, And It Feels No Good"/"Not Without My Cash Cow!" Top Cat "The Case of the Absent Anteater"/"T.C. Minds The Baby" 4. Top Cat "The Unscratchables""/"Rafeefleas"/"The Tycoon"/"The Long Hot Winter" AUGUST 4 5. The Lost Continent (1968) - Some good model VFX and some awful puppet SX. It's amazing how Hammer could make some very impressive ship models and sets, and then make some of the silliest-looking giant crustaceans in the same film. Dysfunctional production and poor editing choices ruin the film. 6. Evilspeak (1982) - I didn't expect this film to qualify when I started watching it, but lots of early-'80s computer graphics puts it here. There's some nice looking man-eating pig puppets too. AUGUST 5 7. Star Trek: TAS "Beyond the Farthest Star" - Watching the series for the first time here, although I might have seen a few over the years. Watching in broadcast order. Canon or non-canon? "Yesteryear" - A terrible, half-hatched time-travel episode that surely wouldn't have made the cut for a live-action series. If Spock had died as a youngster, there would never, at any point, have been an older Spock to save himself. Fontana also insists that Spock can't be in two places at once, although it's perfectly okay for two Spocks to be in the same place at once. These aren't even paradoxes...just typical ST time-travel BS nonsense. "One of Our Planets is Missing" - The crew of the Enterprise seem to spend a great deal of time entering and exiting alien orifices. But, then again, Mr. Sulu is the helmsman. "The Lorelei Signal" - This would have made a great Beavis and Butt-head episode. "We're finally gonna score--huh huh, huh huh!" AUGUST 6 8. Star Trek: TAS "More Tribbles, More Troubles" - One of the better episodes, since it was already honed for the possible live-action series. "More Tribbles, More Troubles" - Watched again with the Gerrold commentary. "The Survivor" - Star Fleet has budget issues? Apparently, even in the perfected future, money itself can solve most problems that technology can't. "The Infinite Vulcan" - Plant men, a giant clone of Spock...this would have made a fine live-action episode--for Lost in Space. AUGUST 7 Heroes Season 4 9. "Orientation" - It's hard to believe that this show went downhill so fast and that this is the last gasp. Season One was so good and its quality seemed too difficult to duplicate; the middle seasons just wandered aimlessly. This opening episode does little to get things back on track. 10. "Jump, Push, Fall" - Claire's story is totally predictable, while Hiro goes the My Name is Earl route. "Ink" - This carnival thing seems a bit too Carnivale-ish, and the season feels tired already. 11. "Acceptance"/Hysterical Blindness" - We've met several new heroes, but we still don't know exactly what their powers are and if there is any purpose to it all. I'm sure there are plenty of heroes out there that have pointless powers, but it doesn't make for good viewing. Things are developing way too slowly for my tastes. AUGUST 8 Heroes Season 4 12. "Tabula Rasa"/"Strange Attractors" 13. "Once Upon A Time In Texas""/(with commentary) - One of my main complaints about the middle seasons was the retelling of events from the first season. The creators seemed to have thought that the way to duplicate the success of the first season was to keep going back to it. Season One was great...but it's long finished and should be left alone. The show couldn't move forward if it kept going backwards. AUGUST 9 Heroes Season 4 14. "Shadowboxing"/"Shadowboxing" (with commentary) 15. "Brother's Keeper"/"Thanksgiving" 16. "The Fifth Stage"/"The Fifth Stage" (with commentary) AUGUST 10 Heroes Season 4 17. "Upon This Rock"/"Let It Bleed" 18. "Close to You"/"Pass/Fail" - It's well past the midpoint of the season, and finally there seems to be a purpose (or, should I say, a plot?). This has been standard procedure for the past three seasons, and it's no wonder that viewers left in droves. AUGUST 11 Heroes Season 4 19. "The Art of Deception"/"The Wall" 20. "Brave New World"/"Brave New World" (with commentary) - I don't think anyone was too surprised when the show wasn't renewed for a fifth season, and everything is tied up fairly well...Sylar finds redemption, Claire outs herself (in more ways than one), etc. I'm still saddened that such a good show can go from the top to the bottom so quickly. 21. Star Trek: TAS "The Magicks of Megas-tu"/"Once Upon a Planet"/"Mudd's Passion"/"The Terratin Incident" AUGUST 12 22. Star Trek: TAS "The Time Trap"/"The Ambergris Element"/"The Slaver Weapon"/"The Eye of the Beholder" - As the first season winds down, things seem more like TOS and less like a Saturday morning cartoon. Once one gets over the limitations of Filmation and the short running time, this is actually a pretty good show. AUGUST 13 23. Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 "Day Of Honor"/"Nemesis" - As with Babylon 5, the CGI VFX have actually gotten pretty good after the first few seasons. The detail of the Voyager craft itself is very impressive, looking much more realistic than the ship models used in other shows; scaling is much better as well. AUGUST 14 24. Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 "Revulsion"/"The Raven" - Along with CGI improvement, the stories themselves seem much more interesting at this point...more time and resources seem to have been spent as compared to the earlier seasons. Seven was actually a great addition to the show, from a character standpoint. AUGUST 15 25. Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 "Scientific Method"/"Year Of Hell (1)" - Here we go with another Braga time-travel story, bloated to 2 parts. Nothing that happens in this episode matters, so what is the point of it all? AUGUST 16 26. Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 "Year Of Hell (2)"/"Random Thoughts" - Despite being 2 hours of stuff that didn't really happen, the two-parter had some fine CGI, especially the battle-damaged Voyager craft. The guest stars were excellent as well. AUGUST 17 27. Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 "Concerning Flight"/"Mortal Coil" - It's amazing that there are no safeguards to stop things from being beamed on or off a starship without authorization...of course, transporter technology is an aspect of the ST universe that has always left gaping holes of logic. AUGUST 18 28. Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 "Waking Moments"/"Message In A Bottle" - Despite the idea of a gay EMH (not that there is anything wrong with that), "Message in a Bottle" is probably my favorite episode so far. The whole series takes a step forward as contact is finally made with Starfleet. AUGUST 19 29. Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 "Hunters"/"Prey" - The improvements in CGI made for some great-looking aliens as well...now they don't all have to be a guy in a rubber suit. AUGUST 20 30. King Kong Escapes (1967) - I haven't seen this one since I was a kid. I'd forgotten that it was a Rankin-Bass coproduction, and maybe that's why Kong looks a lot like the Abominable Snowman from the Rudolph film. I enjoyed the model effects--they looked cool, in a George Pal kind of way. AUGUST 21 31. The Atomic Cafe (1982) - Had a few propaganda cartoons in it, such as Burt the Turtle. AUGUST 22 Watched "Companeros" and "The Hellbenders". The spaghetti western genre just doesn't seem to have anything that qualifies for the Animation Challenge! AUGUST 23 32. Star Trek: Enterprise "Broken Bow" - Skipped ahead (or aback) for a change of pace in the ST universe. This pilot episode was very heavy in CGI, and was actually pretty good...I assume the show went downward as it went along (unlike the previous ST series). Of course, with Braga at the helm, lots of time-travel nonsense is surely coming. AUGUST 24 33. Star Trek: Enterprise "Broken Bow" (with commentary) - Braga and Berman point out that, for the first time in a ST series, no models were used--it's all CGI. I did have issues with it taking place 700 years after Voyager...7 centuries later, and the Alpha quadrant still hasn't made significant contact with the Delta quadrant, especially along the Voyager's path? AUGUST 30 Watched more spaghetti westerns. AUGUST 31 Watched some spaghetti horror films. Some had a bit of puppetry, and might even qualify for the challenge under the loose "Star Wars" rule.
