1929 Hollywood Review of 1929 - Cameo
1930 Rogue Song - Full length movie - in color! Listed as the only L&H feature no longer in existence.
1934 Hollywood Party. L&H full length movie. Supposedly one of their weakest efforts, but still would like to see it.
1937 Pick a Star. Full length movie. While not starring L&H, there were in 2 long sequences.

If anybody knows anything about these, I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

Steve,

Regarding the above titles, the first one was just a cameo in a movie that I believe is no longer available on either VHS or DVD. The second one I never even heard of and the third I have on VHS but I have also heard it was available only in Germany, but you might still be able to secure a VHS copy of the Hollywood Party on Ebay or the Marketplace. The last one I got at the old Musicland store as a public domain title many years ago, but only available on VHS though. In this country, the way L&H is being distributed and released is an atrocity. Thank goodness for the British set that has almost everything on it as the remainder of their films are available here.

The first one: Hollywood Revue of 1929 - It's available on WB Archives. I bought it from WB. It was never made on dvd until now with print on demand.

PBishop69,

Just on the one end as it just came yesterday afternoon via UPS, so I got some white tape and just taped it up on the side and it looks just fine. I was more worried about the discs than the box, but so far, it looks presentable.

This was my first order with the UK version of Amazon and let me tell you, what a crazy hassle it was, but it was worth it to get this set in its [almost] entirety. Again, thanks to you and Steve for even letting me know about it.

Steve,

All four films, at least the L&H segments of them (as they were basically cameos in larger films) are on the TCM Archives DVD of THE DEVIL'S BROTHER / BONNIE SCOTLAND from Warner Home Video.

Some people are finding the DVD at Big Lots (I didn't), but it is 53% off at Amazon as I write this.

MovieZZ - great, since I just bought this at BL for $6.

BTW- I put my chronological index of the 21 box set on the web for easier viewing/printing, with comments.

Hollywood Revue of 1929 is available on DVD-R from Warner Archives.

Hollywood Party and Pick A Star are occasionally shown on TCM.

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?

btw. been thru 3 volumes of the UK set. The sound films are in great shape! Well worth the price of the box itself.

The silents are abysmal - ranging from unwatchable to poor. I have some 8mm prints of these and my version are infinitely better than this stuff. The Image "lost films of L&H" 10 disc set, which is now OOP and go from $50 to $100 PER DISC, also had much much better prints of these silents. VERY disappointing..

Still great value for the sounds.. but L&H and the fans deserve much better treatment for the silents.

Steve,

Thanks for the heads-up on that as I haven't watched my set as of yet. I have the VHS versions of the silents and glad I kept those around, as a back-up but let's face it...this set is a thousand times better than what is currently being released here at home, which is barely nothing of their work.

Haven't watched anything in my set as of yet. Sad to hear the silents are in crappy condition. Hopefully, Kino will rerelease those silents from Image in the near future.

Steve, how are the silents that Laurel & Hardy did separately? I notice that Stan has 2 volumes by Kino and Oliver has one volume by Kino. I'm thinking about getting those too.

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?

check out DVDTALK's review - do a search on "Stan Laurel". Sounds like they are a winner..

I have seen some of his early stuff on the now OOP L&H lost films (I have 2). They are so different - I just couldn't get into them. Stan plays a hyperactive smart aleck - I just couldn't accept him as this after seeing him with Hardy for hundreds of films. My daughter disliked Stan solo's so much she now asks me before I play any L&H films "Dad, you're sure this has BOTH of them, right? I don't want to see their solo stuff"

That being said, they ARE very funny.. And for L&H completists, it's a no brainer.

I am just saying that he is a completely different character than when he as in L&H. Just be prepared.

I might pick them up one day.... for now, I am happy watching the UK L&H films.
