I get mine tomorrow, Steve. I really wish they would still include the booklet with a possible index of what is on each disc. It would just make things easier. Oh well...
Pbishop69 Otherwise, great set. |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
Guiys and gals,
Be careful with amazon.uk and its pricing as they just raised the price of the set to L39.93, which at the current rate of exchange is now about $62.08 in USA money. I hate when they do this! |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
Hey Steve!!
I got mine today. Was the box to your set split open along the sides? Mine was. Looks like I'm returning it. Oh well.... Pbishop69 |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
I'm glad I'm finding all this important info out before placing an order for the set myself. Thanks for the heads-up guys.

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
Is there another retailer who sells Region 2 dvds where I can buy this set instead of Amazon.uk?
Pbishop69 |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
Amazon.uk has traditionally been excellent about replacing damaged merchandise. It's not unusual for them to tell you to just keep the damaged item while they send you a new one due to the high cost of sending it back. Just FYI.

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
Thanx Mdnitoil!! I'm going to give that a shot.

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
I just found out, Amazon.uk is sending me a replacement. Again, I can't tell if this damage to the L & H outer box was caused by UPS shipping or not. It's really hard to tell. The box that it was shipped in was definitely beaten up quite a bit. But that's UPS for ya. Honestly, I trust the post office more than I do UPS anymore regarding my item coming in one piece these days.

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
wow! my box was packed with paper in a typical sturdy Amazon box.. not a dent.
somewhat related.. if you have a big lots near you, they are currently selling TCM L&H archives (bonnie scotland, fra diablo) and fox L&H set (air raid wardens?) for $6 each.. |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
I wish I can find that set at Big Lots though here in Chicago...still no luck...BUT I also bit on the 21-disc set. Couldn't pass that deal up either and getting a new multi-region player as well.

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
I spent a lot of time and created an chronological index of the 21 box set. made some comments in a spreadsheet if anyone wants that version, just send me a pm

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
On a side note, I found some missing shorts/fims that are not in the box sets and not anywhere else, as far as I can tell.
1929 Hollywood Review of 1929 - Cameo 1930 Rogue Song - Full length movie - in color! Listed as the only L&H feature no longer in existence. 1934 Hollywood Party. L&H full length movie. Supposedly one of their weakest efforts, but still would like to see it. 1937 Pick a Star. Full length movie. While not starring L&H, there were in 2 long sequences. If anybody knows anything about these, I would appreciate it. Thank you. |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
Thanx Steve. This list will help. I'll check on those other short/features too. My replacement copy is supposed to come today. We'll see how that goes. I have absolutely no faith in UPS anymore.
Pbishop69 |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
Hey Steve! Just got my replacement set from UPS about a half hour ago. First of all, the box Amazon shipped the set in was in so much better condition than the last one. Night and day. Oh yeah, and to my surprise, Amazon.uk shipped it overnight. That was nice of them. Anyway, as I held my breath when I took the set out of the box, I was relieved that the L & H outer box WAS NOT split open on the sides like my last one. But I still wasn't happy yet. I had to open all 21 cases and inspect them to make sure the discs weren't floating around in their cases with the possiblity of being scratched. If u only knew how many times that's happened to me. To my surprise EVERYTHING was ok. Thank God that saga is over with. Hopefully I'll start watching some of these very soon. Looks like a great set.

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
I just got my set in today and I am impressed with this. That's the main reaosn why I got a new multi-region player...just for this set. I don't care about the outer end of the box being split as I can tapew that up, but my main concern was the discs themselves and they all looked pristine. Going to start watching it this week. Steve, thank you for the listings as well and for you guys giving me the heads-up on this. Without you guys, I wiouldn't have known this set existed.

Regarding the above titles, the first one was just a cameo in a movie that I believe is no longer available on either VHS or DVD. The second one I never even heard of and the third I have on VHS but I have also heard it was available only in Germany, but you might still be able to secure a VHS copy of the Hollywood Party on Ebay or the Marketplace. The last one I got at the old Musicland store as a public domain title many years ago, but only available on VHS though. In this country, the way L&H is being distributed and released is an atrocity. Thank goodness for the British set that has almost everything on it as the remainder of their films are available here. |

Pbishop69 Just on the one end as it just came yesterday afternoon via UPS, so I got some white tape and just taped it up on the side and it looks just fine. I was more worried about the discs than the box, but so far, it looks presentable. This was my first order with the UK version of Amazon and let me tell you, what a crazy hassle it was, but it was worth it to get this set in its [almost] entirety. Again, thanks to you and Steve for even letting me know about it. |

All four films, at least the L&H segments of them (as they were basically cameos in larger films) are on the TCM Archives DVD of THE DEVIL'S BROTHER / BONNIE SCOTLAND from Warner Home Video. Some people are finding the DVD at Big Lots (I didn't), but it is 53% off at Amazon as I write this. |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
MovieZZ - great, since I just bought this at BL for $6.
BTW- I put my chronological index of the 21 box set on the web for easier viewing/printing, with comments. http://www.stevebenkin.com/laurelandhardy/L&Hindex.pdf enjoy |

Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
btw. been thru 3 volumes of the UK set. The sound films are in great shape! Well worth the price of the box itself.
The silents are abysmal - ranging from unwatchable to poor. I have some 8mm prints of these and my version are infinitely better than this stuff. The Image "lost films of L&H" 10 disc set, which is now OOP and go from $50 to $100 PER DISC, also had much much better prints of these silents. VERY disappointing.. Still great value for the sounds.. but L&H and the fans deserve much better treatment for the silents. |
Re: Laurel and Hardy ?
Steve,
Thanks for the heads-up on that as I haven't watched my set as of yet. I have the VHS versions of the silents and glad I kept those around, as a back-up but let's face it...this set is a thousand times better than what is currently being released here at home, which is barely nothing of their work. |
