Interestingly enough, I saw some of these again in a Walmart $5 bin for the first time in over a year.

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

TGG is starting to get Universal titles too. I bought North Shore, which Universal previously put out themselves, disc is pretty stripped-down (menu just has a "Play" option! Why even bother?) but at least is still 16x9.

I want the disk with 1984 too. When will their disk with 1984 finally come out? I am waiting for that one.

The only place I've seen selling the 1984/Megaville DVD online recently is Hamilton Book.

It appears TGG may have split the films apart into separate Amazon-exclusive DVD-on-demand sets. 1984 is paired with Crime & Punishment in a John Hurt Double Feature: http://www.amazon.com/1984-Crime-Pun.../dp/B00BJC8OJ2

And Megaville is paired with... The Meteor Man in a "Fantasy Double Feature".

*shrugs*

I'm still waiting to see the Miracle Mile disc somewhere to see if it's widescreen (the original DVD was full frame)

Letterboxed but not anamorphic.

which means you should definitely hold on to your original disc, as it was an open-matte transfer.

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

And to finally get 1984 back in print! I have the original DVD release, so to buy it again, paired with a crappy 2nd movie as the double-feature, is probably not worth $15. Nice price increase, $6.95 to $15, natch.

Re: 1984

If anyone here has Amazon Prime, I recently watched their HD streaming video of 1984 and it was quite good looking (I'm doing one of those 30-day free trials, don't intend on joining). I know this would normally belong on the streaming thread, but since we're talking about 1984 so much, this might look better than any available DVD copy. (I'm not a member of Netflix currently, don't know if they're streaming it in HD.)

Re: TGG

Someone over at AV Maniacs & Latarnia posted last year the aspect ratios and brief reviews of the Amazon exclusive TGG DVD-r's he'd bought. This is the only place I've been able to find specs about these DVDs outside of a few Amazon customer reviews: http://thelatarniaforums.yuku.com/sr...-deal-with-MGM
http://www.avmaniacs.com/forums/show...l=1#post945306

Basically it sounds like this batch is a cheaper equivalent to the MGM MOD DVD-r's, except TGG & Amazon have done a shit job posting any spec info.

TGG-r

Bad news, guys. Just picked up 1984 / Megaville from HB. That's a DVD-r too, 2 films on a single-disc DVD-r.

I also recently received The Hospital / Bank Shot via DVD swapping, and that's DVD-r too. A lot of these TGG combos are DVD-r even if they're not explicitly advertised as such. They don't even have the fucking courtesy to state it on the back cover. The only place it's stated is very tiny print on the spine.

DVD
VIDEO DISC

DVD-R FORMAT

Frankly I would advise anyone against mailordering TGG. And if you find any in Walmart bins, make sure you look at the DVD logo at the bottom of the spine and see if it says "DVD-R FORMAT" in microscopic print.

The Amazon DVD-r's are supposed to be 2-disc sets, at least.

I think there are variations in the original MGM DVD of 1984 and the TGG print. The original MGM DVD is supposed to have replaced the Eurythmics soundtrack with the director-preferred Dominic Muldowney score, and the transfer is much brighter visually than the desaturated bleach-bypass print screened theatrically.

The versions I've watched on Amazon Instant Video and the 1984/Megaville DVD-r go back to the desaturated look & I think return the Eurythmic synthesizer score segments.

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

I just bought the MGM/TGG version of Missing in Action and Missing in Action II.

They are both 16:9 anamorphic but Missing in Action has a strange stretched look.

The film was originally 1.85:1 so this anamorphic version should fill just about the entire 16:9 TV screen. Instead, the picture is framed 2.35:1 with the larger black bars at the top and bottom.

It looks like they took the 1.85:1 image and stretched it to 2.35:1 ratio giving it a slightly distorted look.

I've never seen this done before. Missing in Action II looked normal 1.85:1 anamorphic so it's not as if my Blu-ray/TV settings were off.

Any one else notice this?

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

Does anybody know if this is a DVD-R. I'm trying to avoid them.
Oldies has Miracle Mile with 1984 as a bonus movie barely mentioned on the cover.

Both of those movies came out in fairly strong Blu-rays last year:

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

It's nice to see that they made some nice-looking Blu-ray versions of these films.

I paid a $1.99 for the twin pack and since they are not particularly good movies, I'll probably just stick with the DVD.

Using one of TV settings, I was able to find a setting which "corrected" the image of Missing in Action and made it watchable again. Definitely a strange transfer though.

Walmart racks are getting smaller and smaller. As in many of my Best Buy locations.

Does this mean the end (of DVDs are near?)

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

DVD is definitely in a serious decline but it's still a reliable revenue generator for the studios. I expect it to last for another decade, until most of the country has better streaming options.

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

The Goldfoot TGG double feature just recently became available for order online at walmart.com for 5.38. I emailed TGG through the website linked above asking if it is a dvd-r because amazon has a release of this listed as dvd-r dated Feb this year. "Michelle" responded that it is a pressed disc when I asked specifically about the walmart listing. I did not mention amazon.

Should I risk it? I should have asked about 1984 as a control question. I almost ordered it from HB. It is 5.95 there but there is shipping too (3.40 + .40 per item).

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

^Amazon has *two* listings for the Dr. Goldfoot 2-pack. One is a DVD set and the other is a DVD-R. They have different UPC codes like it *should* be done (other distributors should take note).

Pressed version UPC: 011891800815
DVD-R version UPC: 887936824074

(UPC info from camelcamelcamel.com)

You can use the UPC to search at WM for the *correct* version. My guess is WM has the pressed copy.

Re: TGG Direct Double and Triple MGM Features

Thanks Bob OL. Walmart indeed had the pressed upc listed on the page. I think I might take a chance and report back once I get it. I wasn't aware they had 2 different ones. Next time I'll think to check camelcamelcamel for that info too.
