DVD case stickers...a thing of the past???

The last few newly released dvd's I've purchased have had no stickers on the case whatsoever. YAHOO!!! I hope this is a new trend that will stay as I always thought they were a PIA! Anyone else noticing that as well?

I've haven't been seeing many of the stickers on the side and bottom of the case lately.

Same here, but the ones on the top are still there.

I carefully remove them with a razor blade, so I don't mind them at all. Once in a blue moon, they may leave a little bit of glue residue on the case, but that's no biggie. The biggest caveat is to make sure that the tape is not covering the artwork before buying.

I wish they kept on doing them, at least the one that says the title on the top. I always save that one and put it in the case.

My mother in law keeps the stickers with the title from her CDs to place on the cassette tape she makes of each of her purchases....

I just bought a couple newly added (not newly released, to my knowledge) DVDs from the $5 section at Walmart without the stickers. I was cautious though, thinking they might be selling used copies somehow.

I hope that is true (unless you bought bootlegs?) especially when the tape is sticking to the artwork and you peel off the ink of the artwork when you remove the security tape.

DVDs from 20th Century FOX would usually leave a stain or residue on the plastic.

I've always done that myself. Years ago (sometime circa 1999/2000) when I first started purchasing DVDs I recent to return a bum disc to wal-mart and they said I couldn't return a DVD without the top sticker for the UPC code of whathaveyou. Ever since them I've kept them just in case and now it's just become habit.

That's a prerequisite.

I've also noticed that many titles, or some copies of certain titles oddly, don't have the top stickers.

I prefer to have them, as I keep them on the spine of the original case when I transfer the rest of the package to a slimcase.

Re: DVD case stickers...a thing of the past???

I'm curious as to why all the region 2 DVDs and BDs I've ordered come from the UK sticker-free, but we have to deal with that shit. Amazon should add this to their to-do list for hassle free packaging or whatever they call that.

I'm seeing a handful of new-release blus without stickers too.

Odd to start phasing those out after more than a decade. Either they were a good idea or not, but I don't see how the situation has changed (????)

Sometimes when I buy a new DVD, it rarely makes it home with the shrinkwrap, stickers, and little security sticker still on. I can toss them in the trash can in my garage so they don't even make it into the house.

Re: DVD case stickers...a thing of the past???

Shortly after I remove the sticker, I am usually annoyed by non-skippable ads reminding me not to steal the movie I just bought. By the time that WTF moment passes, I have forgotten about the case stickers.

The stickers are worse on CDs where the tape breaks in the middle and you have fragments of the sticker sticking to the top of the case and they almost always leave residue.

This is worse on older CD titles.

Re: DVD case stickers...a thing of the past???

I saw this feedback for an Amazon marketplace seller:

Rating: 2 out of 5
"Item description: "Brand New & Sealed Original USA Distributed Retail DVD, Not a resealed used DVD" However, DVD case did NOT have 'factory' security seal strips, and had VERY obviously been RE-shrink-wrapped. Otherwise, appeared to be "NEW" as advertised. So, what's my problem? "Brand New" means "Brand New", NOT "re-packaged". Beware!"
Date: May 5, 2010 Rated by Buyer: dhammond

Seller Response: "We only buy brand new & sealed DVDs from the same major distributors used by Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Blockbuster, Target, and all other US video retailers. We sell our DVDs in the precise condition as we receive them from Baker & Taylor distribution. Often, older titles that are being deleted by the film studios come without the white factory seal strips you cite. " Date: May 5, 2010

I wonder if Ebay/Amazon marketplace buyers who get their DVDs without any security seal stickers will think they're getting used or bootlegged DVDs?

Most of the newer DVDs I buy these days have at least the top security tape, I slice them down the middle then peel the tape off either side. Any residue remaining on the case can be removed (if you have the patience) by using the sticky underside of the tape you just removed to unstick the spots of residue. I guess I'm anal like that but I can't stand leaving any of that commercial/security crap on my DVDs, they need to be nice & clean. I also pull the magnetic strips from inside the cases and throw them away. I'm not planning on selling any of the DVDs I buy, I'm building a library that my wife and I can watch until we're too old to see the TV anymore...

From my perspective, if the DVD doesn't have at least one side (usually the top) sealed with that security tape, then I feel like it's probably a previously viewed DVD and I won't buy it (unless it's either at a huge discount or I already knew it was used before I bought it). If I did buy it, I'd make sure their policy allowed me to return it if I should open it up and find the DVD is in poor condition. -kd5-

Someone in this very thread suggested it.

I like the sticker as after I remove the plastic wrapper, I can wad it into a ball and throw the sticker around it so the smaller pieces don't float away.

Re: DVD case stickers...a thing of the past???

I have noticed DVD without any of the stickers. It is very few and far between and I when I do notice, it is on the $5 or less movies. First couple times I got one, I thought it was a return, but the discs were perfect and shrink wrapping wasn't the crappy kind most stores use.
