I wasn't planning on doing another challenge before the next horror one, but for some reason summer and Sci-Fi sound really good together, so count me in.

You can just watch the same amount of stuff that you would normally watch, but gear it towards sci-fi/fantasy.

Some people, myself included half the time, go crazy and watch 100+, but you can watch just a couple things and be just as much a part of the Challenge as anyone else.

Yeah, Hollow Earth? I can't think of 1 Hollow earth film outside of Journey to the Center of the Earth. There were nearly 100 Emmanuelle and Bruce Li films, each.

One of the coolest things about running a challenge is not seeing the people who reach 100+ but seeing the people who hit 2 or 3 and their post count is like less than 5. These are about building community and if it draws out the lurkers to actually participate, then it's been a success.

I need a suggestion!

Will add 2010.

As for hollow earth, I've found The Phantom Empire, The Mole People, Journey To The Center of the Earth, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Superman and the Mole Men, Saul of the Mole Men.

I figure I'll add 3 wildcards to the checklist for limited things like this. I also want to retool the actors.

Fwiw, I think there are at least 4 different versions of Journey to the Center of the Earth.

edit to add: Actually, looks like ten or so if you count deviations in the name

I'm looking forward to watching as much of Buffy as possible and finally watching the Blade Runner blu-ray that's been sitting on the shelf for awhile.

I was thinking about doing something I've threatened for years and watching all 6 movies back to back.

as a first time viewer... are the 3 newer ones worth watching? or should i tackle the original trilogy? and are clone wars worth picking up cheap

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread

If you've never seen them, watch the original trilogy. There's a reason they are beloved. As for the prequels, it depends on your tolerance for kitsch. If you like, say, Flash Gordon (the one with the Queen score), then you might appreciate it. My own opinion is that Lucas dropped the ball. Phantom Menace should have been the first act of the first film, Attack of the Clones the rest of the film and Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith should have filled the next two films. He kept all the goods for the third film so the first two are bloated and the third film is rushed.

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread

The Clone Wars are definitely worth picking up also. There's two different iterations. There's the one from several years ago done by Genndy Tartovsky (Samurai Jack), that's on two discs, and it's regular cel animation, and it's great for watching between Eps 2 and 3. There's also the more recent CGI version. There's the first movie sold by itself, which is kinda clunky, but then the first season of the regular series is just leaps and bounds better. The second season is due on disc this fall.

When showing it to my wife the first time, I started with Episode 1. She didn't know Anakin would turn into Vader or who the emperor was. That's why I went that way.

I'm looking forward to watching the 'work print' edition of the film.

Add

At the Earth's Core
The Core

And would Disney's Atlantis fit this category?

Isn't Atlantis just the underwater city?

Not sure about At the Earth's Core but I don't think The Core counts since it's not really substantially hollow in that film.

Pretty sure we had a thread arguing over the viewing order a couple months back. I say start with the originals; IV, V and VI. Then if you enjoy those watch the prequels and all the other various movies and shows. I'd hate to think someone would watch in "order" and never make it to the classics because they're so turned off by the prequels, especially episode I.

I might have to join in on this. Mostly because I'll have more time on my hands.

Wondering how much Sci-Fi or Fantasy stuff I have in my collection though.

There's always plenty to rent and stream from Netflix, plus free sites like Hulu and AMC B-Movies.

Totally forgot about those. I don't have a Netflix account, but I do have AMC, IFC and SyFy as part of my TV programming.

ok i ended up getting all 6 films for cheap from a co worker. now looking into clone wars releasing. now also picked up mad max movies and lord of the rings ee.

so to round off the month im looking to dive into BSG seasons, but need to be schooled on the specials. are they worth it? how many? and where they fall among the seasons? like razor the plan, capprica, etc...

milo bloom 06-12-10 08:40 AM

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread

Razor will be with the 4th season box but happens in the 2nd season between The Captain's Hand and Downloaded. The Plan is not a movie proper but more of a clip show from the first two seasons but with newly filmed clips. I'd watch it after No Exit in the 4th season.

Also, before you start the first disc of s2 there is a web series called The Resistance on the 2nd disc that should be watched first.

Caprica is a new series set 50 years before BSG. I've only seen the pilot but I really liked it.
