You should also check out Shivers, if you haven't already.

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
I saw Shivers long ago on VHS. That's a movie that needs a good Region 1 DVD release in the proper aspect ratio. Criterion maybe?

Anyone who hasn't already, please vote for your favorite 50's sci-fi film here: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/movie-talk/...i-fi-film.html |

I'm that other guy that voted for The Blob.

Ahhh, we're nearing the end. I've figured out my schedule for the rest of the week and I should be able to finish the checklist! It's not done yet, but I think I'll make it. *fingers crossed*

BTW...I notice Buster Keaton as your pic. I'm going to see "The General" at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in a couple of weeks...can't wait! |

Just a few things I have learned so far from this year's challenge....
If I discover any more little nuggets, I'll update this post. |
Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
When Darth Vader first meets Mace Windu in Jumper, after escaping, he could've instead jumped to get a gun, jumped back and killed him. Other that that, it's not bad so far and I'm halfway through it.

I'm doing just terrible. Might try and watch The Thing tomorrow night. Maybe check out an episode or two of The Prisoner as well. A friend of mine gave me his DVD box set when he bought the Blu-rays and I've been itching to check them out.
What I really need to do is fix or replace my portable DVD player (the monitor is all screwy)... I used to watch movies on my lunch break all the time at my last job. Would love to continue to do that. |
Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
It seems like I should have finished the checklist a long time ago but I'm just finishing it tonight with Fritz Lang's "Woman in the Moon."
After this is over, I'm going to go through my list and give my impressions even though some of the movies from the beginning of the month have already left my memory. |
Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
I need a ruling for the remaining days of the challenge...
Do the Batman films count as fantasy? I know imdb does not list them as fantasy but I seem to remember a discussion allowing The Dark Knight to count when it was released. |

They were ruled to count as Sci-Fi last year, at least most of them iirc. Counting Fantasy this year, I'd say it would probably make most of them doubly count.

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
I need a ruling too. Would the movie "Crumb" count? It's a documentary on the underground comic writer/artist. His work is mainly comedy, but it's LSD inspired and has a lot of odd creatures that would fall in the fantasy category.

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
Thanks to StarCraft 2 I had my first day with nothing watched. I still think I can finish up Crusade/Legend of the Rangers by the end of Saturday, but the temptation to play will make that tougher.

My Percy Jackson shipped from Netflix despite being listed as "short wait." And just in time to make the end of July--I feel like I won the lottery!

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
I organize my DVDs by genre and I even separate the "comic book" movies as a separate genre. I can't think of any of them that wouldn't qualify as fantasy (regardless of what a website says.) I suppose the ONLY argument that could be made against Batman is the fact that he doesn't really have any super powers and neither does the Joker, really. However, the characters are meant to be fantastical in nature (even if grounded in reality) and I would definitely consider all the Batman films to be Fantasy. Batman Begins and Dark Knight actually have some pretty significant sci-fi (or science fact) elements to them too.

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
I don't know for sure about Crumb for Sci-fi, but I would consider holding onto it for the animation challenge, since it is cartoon/ comic related.
