1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
Is there a list of studio release movies that have been altered from their OAR of 2.35:1 and put on DVD for the purpose of viewing on a 16X9 TV? Thanks much....no opinions please, just facts.

Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
Original release of Lord Of War made this mistake.

Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
I know that they opened up (not cropped) "Traitor" to 1.78 from 2.35/2.40 (not sure which) for the DVD release, but kept the OAR for the Blu-ray. It was not a mistake however, but a conscious decision.
Was "Lord of War" cropped on the sides or opened up? |

Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
So, movie companies ...aside from these instances, have never created altered versions of 2.35:1 and wider movies to accomodate the modern day fullscreen equivalent >> 16X9 TV's ?? To be more specific, I clipped a segment from a post elswhere that pretty much says it. >>> Below>>
When they "crop" the film to 1.78:1 (16:9) the entire image fills the screen at the proper high resolution (ie. no loss in quality unlike when one tries to zoom in on a 2.35:1 scope film in order to fill their screen). This is it exactly. Thanks |
Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
I believe Once Upon a Time in Mexico was cropped to 1.78 from 2.35.

This is it exactly. Thanks I know Traitor was altered, although I don't know if it was from 2.35:1. I also know there was a big fuss over Tideland's AR being modified in this way, and Gilliam was angry. I could have sworn ThinkFilm was meant to fix it, but who knows if they ever did. |

The Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs DVD is also guilty of this (but it goes back to OAR for the credits).

Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
Some of Robert Rodriguez recent movies are guilty of this.
Once upon a time in Mexico Planet Terror |

Technically, you're watching the equivalent of the "full-screen" version when you watch the 1.78:1 version of Cloudy. The original 2.40:1 version should also be on the disc.

Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
What exactly does it say on the packaging to indicate that the movie is this "fullscreen version " ?

Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
Was Apocalypse Now originally 2.35:1? I'm fairly certain it was. I'm almost positive that it was, but the DVD (The Complete Dossier Edition, anyway) is 1.78:1

Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
The Recruit
And Once Upon a Time in Mexico was shot 1.78:1 with HD cameras. Rodriguez matted it to 2.40:1 for theaters but decided to present it open-matte 1.78:1 for the home video. |
Re: 1.78:1 cropped from 2.35:1
Lions Gate released the movie Creep on DVD modified to 16:9:
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/45...ullscreen.html Lions Gate also released the movie The Snow Walker as 16:9. The original R-rated cut of 40-Year-Old Virgin was originally available only in 16:9, until Universal relented and released an OAR version. I think that one was 4:3 though. The OAR is 1.85:1.
Do companies still bother with 4:3 releases on DVD? It seems like the default is now WS, even if it's possibly an altered WS. |

Damn, you're right. I saw references to it while re-reading the original Lord of War thread, so I got mixed up.

My understanding is that Planet Terror was shot flat and then cropped to scope to match the aspect ratio of Death Proof in theaters. Rodriguez's intended composition was 1.85:1, as shown on DVD and Blu-ray.
--THX Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1 (DVD version) 2.35 : 1 (Grindhouse double feature) http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/gr...n-p-13665.html (info here) |
