Creep, another Lion's Gate release in 16:9 "fullscreen"

Browsing the used DVDs at Movie Gallery last night I noticed that "Creep" was labeled as being in "DVD Widescreen." According to the IMDB, this movie was shot in 2.35 to 1.

Looks like Lion's Gate is testing the new "fullscreen."

The German DVD is listed as 2.35:1. I guess I am not buying any Lion's Gate releases without checking the OAR of the movie.

DVDEmpire says 1.85:1 non anamorphic, but the back cover says "16x9 Widescreen 1.78:1 DVD SCREEN FORMAT" ...hrm

I've written an e-mail to Lion's Gate, telling them that I'm not buying ANY of their DVDs until they release an OAR version of Lord of War. I suggest everyone do the same (replace Lord of War with Creep or any other movie that they've altered this way).

Looks like we are the only ones to get this 1.78:1 version:

I watched this movie over the weekend, paying particular attention to the framing, and it seems possible that the 1.78 version is open matte.

Possibility confirmed. Here is a pic of an R2 screen cap by Jay G. superimposed on a screen cap from my R1 DVD. The image registration is a little off because I didn't get an exact frame match. The black borders were around Jay G's 2.35 screen cap image, and the inside edges of these borders indicate the edges of the 2.35 frame.

Thanks, but I must point out all I did was find that screencap on a webpage, not take it myself. You did the hard part of capping the same image from the R1 and superimposing it.

1.78:1 == 1.85:1. This has been going on for years by all studios. The other big Lions Gate thread covers this in detail.

So what purpose does "16:9 fullscreen" serve? The "give me fullscreen or give me death" people still have 4:3 sets and will be pissed off by the "black bars," and those of us who want OAR will be pissed off that it's modified. (And no I don't think 1.78:1 is significantly different from 1.85:1, I'm talking about 2.35:1 films being shown in 1.78:1.)

Not all the fullscreen fans still have 4:3 sets. More and more people are buying LCD, Plasma, and other HDTV WS sets, and not all of them are fans of OAR or black bars. HBO caters to these people, their HBO-HD channel crops all WS films to 1.78:1. For DVDs, most of the time WS editions have been OAR, but recently Lions Gate has been altering their 2.35:1 releases to 1.78:1. They possibly have been fielding complaints from WS owners about the black bars on these type of films, or Lions Gate could be pro-actively cropping, not thinking WS TV owners would complain about their screen being filled.

Whatever the case is, Lions Gate needs to be told that us DVD buyers want OAR, be it 1.33:1, 1.85:1, or 2.35:1.

It looks like the Hong Kong DTS version is also 1.78:1, and not OAR.

If you want OAR, it looks like you're better of with the Deutsche Version available on that site
