The production values were generally good for the late 70s, and it was well put together; sort of like 60 Minutes covering X-Files stuff. Great theme music and opening/closing titles, too.
And it's hosted by Mr Spock, who sort of gives all of this crazy stuff a veneer of credibility.

I loved watching reruns of this and "David L. Wolper Presents" growing up. "Unsolved Mysteries" was great but too much psychics, crimes, and missing people in between the gold.

The UK release is actually Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World:

While there was a one disc compilation of Mysterious Universe released in the US:

nostalgia aside, is this series on the up-and-up?
Or is it really and strictly only for "entertainment purposes?"

Awesome news, definately interested in purchasing this. Very compelling show although alot was just based on theories of the time and in some cases the same theories today. Price seems a little high, then again this is from Canada. May have to wait for the US version when it becomes available.

It examines topics from flying saucers and Bigfoot, to historical mysteries and controversies like the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Jack the Ripper. From what I remember it was fairly balanced and didn't get too batshit crazy.

The two Rod Serling-hosted specials which aired prior to the start of the regular Nimoy series, "In Search of Ancient Astronauts" (based on Erich von Däniken's book Chariots of the Gods), and "In Search of Ancient Mysteries"...which is the source of the "146 episode count" seen on the outer package shown below. But as a special bonus, VEI is also including all 8 episodes of the short-lived 2002 series, hosted by Mitch Pileggi (The X-Files)!

Everything that was covered has been seen on A&E, HISTORY channel so it's pretty much like reading old history books. Like the footage of Bigfoot back then was proved to be b.s. and we have seen better footage of UFO's in the last few years than anything that was on that show.

I would urge anyone who is considering purchasing this to watch a few episodes on YouTube first. As a child in the 70s, I took this show quite seriously. But seeing it now, I realize that it's more "ooga booga" than real science. For example, on the Bigfoot episode, they give far too much credibility to the so-called "expert." I love childhood nostalgia, but even I have my limits, and I was quite disappointed with what I saw at YouTube.

Anyone know yet if these are the original broadcasts or the syndicated versions?

weren't though tv shows actually longer in the 1960's to the mid 1980's and feature less commerical breaks. What is the running time of a single episode on the DVD edition? - the Youtube videos seem to be 22 minutes.

At least one poster at Home Theater Forum has received this set and says the episodes appear to be uncut and run about 23 minutes each.
Although network shows have often been edited down for syndication, I think most intended-for-syndication shows were shorter from the start since the local advertisers couldn't pay as much for spots as the national advertisers on the networks and thus needed more ads to pay the bills.
