Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
I was shelving some loose DVDs last night, and as I slid Elf in between Edward Scissorhands and Encino Man, I thought to myself "huh, now there's an interesting idea. Three titles on your shelf, not necessarily related but still in your collection for some reason or another."
So here's the game: you've been seeing Devil's Tower in your mashed potatoes for weeks, you wake up tired every morning with an aching backside, and now, they've come for you. You're about to be beamed up to the mothership to go out there, and never return and as the tractor beam is dragging you out of the house you pass by your DVD shelfs, you realize you have just enough time to grab any three DVD titles, as long as they're right next to each other on your shelf. These are three titles that will be all you have with you on your journeys (and you know the aliens are smart enough to build something to play them, and don't give a damn about cracking the code to do it either). So do you grab an easy trilogy? Star Wars IV-VI; Evil Dead trilogy, The Star Trek Genesis trilogy? Or three random titles that happen to be next to each other on your shelf: The Thing from Another World, This Island Earth, THX1138. What do you grab to last you a lifetime? |

Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
for a while i had HOSTEL 2, HOT FUZZ, and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES next to each other (alphabetically) and i thought it was weird since those 3 directors did fake trailers for GRINDHOUSE.

Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
An interesting question. Quickly scanned my collection (considering only single titles) and almost had the perfect combo considering your scenario: Close Encounters of the Third, Cloverfield and Cocoon. But alas, they weren't all right next to each other and aren't at the top of my favorites list. I'm also staying away from the easy trilogy answers.
I'll go with: No Country For Old Men, No Way Out and North by Northwest |
Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
I guess, if I'm grabbing three films that are next to each other (on "my favorites" bookcase), it'd be a Tarantino trio: Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Reservoir Dogs. The Star Wars trilogy or Indian Jones series would be a close 2nd.
If I'm grabbing three from my alphabetical shelf, then it'd be one of: - Children of Men, Chinatown, City of God - Eastern Promises, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands - Total Recall, Traffic, Trainspotting If I didn't pick in some order, it'd be: 2001, Pulp Fiction, and probably Happy Gilmore. That'd hit about every meaningful genre. |

Thriller: A Cruel Picture/True Lies/True Romance
That's the best combo I could come up with. They are all three movies I enjoy and could watch (and have watched) multiple times. |
Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
Wow. I just discovered that virtually all of my favorite movies are isolated from one another. The best I could come up with was:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Cars Casablanca If I sell Cars when I upgrade that to Blu-ray, then I can either add Burn Notice - Season One or Casino Royale (1967). I might make upgrading Cars a priority just so I can take Burn Notice with me. If I went with my Blu-ray library, my preferred trio would be: The Dark Knight The Departed Eyes Wide Shut |

Cool thread idea.
I think push-comes-to-shove, I'd have to grab my Star Wars Trilogy set. Those are endlessly rewatchable for me. |
Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
Bob Hope: The Ultimate Collection
Boogie Nights Bottom: Not Another Half-Arsed DVD Set Mainly because I couldn't live without my Bottom. |

Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
Would TV seasons or movie boxsets count? As long as they fit in one hand I guess.
I'll have to wait until I get home either way. Great thread idea. |
Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
I don't alphabetize, mine are randomly placed by genre, the three together I would grab, Mark Bros MGM box (I like Universal's better, but for 3 in a row couldn't pick) Abbott & Costello Collection & Three Stooges Collection Volume 1

Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
Millennium Season 1
Army of Darkness LE MST3K Vol. 7 Made me realize I need to organize my shelves  |
Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!

Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
the Big Lebwoski, the Big Sleep and Big Trouble in Little China is the best combo i was able to come up with.

Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
Mine are in a half-assed arrangement by genre, but in looking at my dvds the three together I would pick are:
total recall donnie darco 2001: a space Odyssey |
Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
Well I'd want to grab Back to the Future, since that's a thick DVD case, I could probably grab the 4 disc Ben-Hur sitting next to it too, but I would be able to stretch my had enough to grab the Alien Quadrilogy though.
If it was 3 titles from my alpha collection: To Kill a Mockingbird, Tommy Boy & Top Secret... that would be interesting |

Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
Three that are beside each other on my shelf (alphabetized) are the "Six Feet Under" Complete Series Set, followed by "The Wire" Complete Series Collection and that ends the TV on DVD, so the next title in line is "The Coen Brothers Movie Collection" (Fargo / Miller's Crossing / Barton Fink / Raising Arizona / Blood Simple). Sounds like that should keep me going for a while.

Re: Think quick! Grab 3 DVD titles on your way to the final frontier!
I'd be in a hurry, so I'd just grab the first three behind me and next to the door, and I'd end up with Almost Famous (Untitled), Amadeus, and Amelie, and be pretty happy with that as I can watch any of those movies over and over.
