That's not cheating. The title says unwatched movies not DVDs. I only count movies I've never seen at all, or haven't seen in many many years. If I've seen them in theaters or rented them I don't count them on my unwatched list.

I think it's up to each individual to determine how they want to count them. I go by unwatched DVDs. I can't look at a still-sealed title on my shelf and label it as watched, but that's just me. I really appreciate these unwatched threads. Not that it's helped my progress yet. Maybe 2010 will be different!

I like to tell myself if I ever get all the movies I've never seen watched I'll go back and start on all the unopened DVDs. It will never happen, but saying it makes me feel good.

I hope becoming a Ninja Black Belt at home in my spare time doesn't take up too much of my movie watching time(Hint: Look at my bought list. No, I didn't actually pay for this)

Re: Unwatched Movie Pile: January 10 - Let's try this again

I have about 30-40 unwatched Dvd's/Films in my collection of over 2000. About 10 or so of those are Criterions that I havn't got to because of all the extra content in them and I prefer to watch extras right after I watch the film.
I do have quite a few TV series that I havn't gotten to yet admittedly-

Good points. Personally, if I see a movie by rental/theater/whatever, and choose to buy it, I see no reason to open it until I want to watch it again. In my mind, I paid my few dollars for it for the permanent ability to watch it whenever the desire arises, and the film is 'watched', even if still sealed.

I think this year I'm going to concentrate on watching my boxsets. This will kill two birds. One, this thread/purpose, watching my unwatched films. Two, I'll be getting them clearer in my head/database as far as what I own. Most of my mistakes in buying titles I already own seem to be because they are in my boxsets and not easily seen in my alphabetical shelves.

What do you do for a double feature like some of the MGM Midnight Movies or ones that are double but not part of any series like Midnight Movies? I usually sort by the first title but then if I ever want the second, I may or may not find it easier.

Right now, all my double (or more) features and boxsets are on a separate shelving unit, but I'm one of those people that change how I organize things often. I switch to your way often, alphabetizing by first title.

This is sad, but part of me wants to alphabetize double features in both spots, by buying or making a copy. Or maybe just putting a labeled empty slimcase there to remind me that I have the title elsewhere.

How do you all do boxsets? When I switch around and put them alphabetically with all my regular titles, I alphabetize by the name of the boxset, first name first.

The best box sets for me are the ones that don't fit in the shelves, so I just put them on top wherever there's space. Problem is I've run out of room and stuff is being stacked.

On the ones that do fit, I do the same thing as you.

What do you do with Freddy vs Jason, assuming you own it? I put it in F, since then it turns into a new problem of putting it with the Nightmare or Friday movies.

If it's a boxset of a single series, such as the Dirty Harry boxset, it's alphabetized with all the other movies where it belongs. If it's a boxset of random titles, such as a set devoted to a specific actor, it's at the end of the shelves after the alphabetized section. All the random title sets are roughly organized by genre so that the comedy sets are together and the western sets are together and so on.

For the purposes of this thread I count a boxset as 1 entry on my list, mostly because that's how they go in my database.

Box sets are the bane of my OCD. I can never make up my mind on just how I want them organized.

For most box sets in individual cases, I separate them, put the outer box in storage, and file the individual titles alphabetically. But of course, I sometimes regret this and think that maybe I'll put them back the way they came.

Of course, I am currently transferring all my DVDs into slimcases, so that makes the outer boxes of box sets somewhat useless anyway.

For titles like the Marlene Dietrich collection, which can't be easily separated, I just keep it as is and file under 'M'. But should I file under 'D'?

I could probably list another dozen sets and the multiple ways they could be organized. ---huge sigh---

You're an evil man MP.

But yeah, as 'the checklist guy' I'm obviously interested.

Are you thinking something like one film from each of 6 or so genres, one TV season, one Oscar nominated best picture, one MST3K/FC/RT/CT film, etc etc?

Re: Unwatched Movie Pile: January 10 - Let's try this again

I might be interested in a checklist as well. When I'm going through my unwatchd pile, I choose DVDs based on the particular challenge I'm participating in (during those months). This would be no different for me.

Are you thinking something like one film from each of 6 or so genres, one TV season, one Oscar nominated best picture, one MST3K/FC/RT/CT film, etc etc?
Pretty much. I was also thinking of having the list split between a monthly and a yearly list, the latter would carry over month to month through December.

Some I've been toying with are:
Watching an average of 1/2/3 title(s) each day of the month. 3 titles a day would be something that would be hit during the Horror challenge. Not everyone can do it everyday, so that's why I went with an average.

Nothing bought for the month or having an average of 1/2/3 new titles bought for each day of the month. I guess if we want to go with a checklist where everything can be checked, it would be one or the other.

Maybe some average bought and watched items for the yearly one.

A few items that change monthly, like a specific actor, director, year, etc.

Having a net gain/loss for the month at some number.

Pretty much just brainstorming but I don't want to make the items too insane or impossible.

edit: Another idea I was toying with was achievements of some sort, like what the PS3 and 360 do.
