2010 DVD New Year's Resolutions
I noticed that some of you are bumping the 2009 New Year's resolutions thread. Might as well start a new one for 2010.
Here's mine.
1. Hold off on buying current/retro TV on DVD until they drop below $20.
2. Rent more buy less (Netflix has helped alot since I started it in 2007)
3. Don't buy brand new movie releases unless it's something I truly loved seeing it in the theatre.
4. Wait for price drops on movies I like, but don't need right away.
5. Cut down on online DVD/Blu ray shopping even if it's a great deal.
6. No Blind Buys.

Re: 2010 DVD New Year's Resolutions
I did a great job with my resolution last year with stopping the blind-buying instead turning to Netflix.
I will stick to that.
Also will completely stop buying single seasons of TV shows (which I pretty much have anyway) & wait for the box sets.
And continue to get rid of all remaining DVDs that can be replaced with Blu-Rays.

1) No "Blind Buys"
2) Watch more of what I bought in 2009/Back Catalog
I am still surprised how much I shrank my Blind Buying from 2008-2009. I only Blind Bought two things this year (which were awful), so I hope to get that down to zero by next year

Re: 2010 DVD New Year's Resolutions
My big thing is that I need to stop purchasing TV shows no matter how good a deal there is on them. With the exception of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "The Sopranos" in the last 5 years I havn't looked at a TV show disc twice since I've watched it.
So basically my resolution is that unless its a great movie its netflix for the DVD.

I need to tone down the impulse buys. Over the past 6 months, I bought the complete series sets of Six Feet Under, King of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond and have yet to actually start watching a single one. I bought them all because I got them for decent prices but still...

1. Stop buying them.
2. Start watching what I have already bought.
3. Get them organized.
4. Get rid of any DVDs that are not likely to be watched again by anyone in my household.

Told myself to stop buying TV shows (and there always great deals on Seasons) because I just don't have the time to buy all the seasons or keep up watching them.
Dexter is the only exception

1. spend less than $100 a month.
2. get wrestlemania and summerslam anthologies.
3. look into a better storage solution (rotating towers perhaps?)
4. maybe take the jump into blu-ray.

1. Only replace dvd version with blu-ray version if less than $10 (audio & visual must be significant upgrade from dvd)
2. Spend less each month from previous year (this should be easy since I went overboard this year)
3. Start a Netflix account to reduce blind buys
4. Watch more from my collection than I buy each month

Make less blind buys. In fact, to try and reduce this to zero would be great.
Buy much fewer DVD's - even if they are $3 or less at Big Lots, etc.
Continue to enjoy and grow my Blu-ray collection.

Re: 2010 DVD New Year's Resolutions
1) Continue where I left off last year really - use Netflix to supplant blind purchases and those titles I'm on the fence about. I have no idea how many titles I've picked up, took a mental note of, and put back on the shelf without buying due to Netflix availability - even very cheap DVDs.
2) Catch up on my backlog
3) After having recently converted to Blu-ray, limit purchases to "essential" titles only and even then, limit cost to a maximum of $10 unless this is near impossible.
4) Refrain from letting upgraditus take control when considering which titles from my DVD collection need to be upgraded to Blu. At the moment an extremely low amount need to be substituted - about 1% of 1200+. Plan is in development for this one, but for the most part this conversion will be a solution for the collection going forward only.
5) I'm a lazy bugger when it comes to bargain hunting, but to keep #3 in check I'll be moving further into the coupon hunting, stacking and price matching arena than I'd care to go. But so be it - it's the only way.
6) Increase in patience. Long gone are the days of impulsive DVD purchasing, but I still get caught up in the moment occasionally. I'd like to put a complete stop to this.

I did so well with last years resolutions, I think I'm good for 2010.
(Last years was wait for price drops on movies and TV shows, less blind buys and get into blu ray)

Re: 2010 DVD New Year's Resolutions
1) Start watching some of my unwatched movie pile which is huge.
2) Try and wait for dvds I want to go on sale.
That's about it. I don't know how many times I buy something the day it comes out, only to have it unopened or watch only part of it.

- With the bedroom DVD player being replaced by a BR player, buy standard DVD only when no BR version exists
- Transition other rooms to BR
- Watch what I buy within 2 weeks (Still have a blind-buy...The Hangover...in shrinkwrap)
- Catch up on viewing unwatched DVD/BRs
- Minimize "place/time shifting" of Netflix rentals and take advantage of BR availability...if necessary drop to a lower plan to encourage this.

Re: 2010 DVD New Year's Resolutions
Before I responded with 2010 resolutions, I thought I'd see what the hell I said I was gonna do in '09. It turns out I was on a quest to watch everything in our library with every available commentary track. Yeah, that happened... So, commentary tracks notwithstanding, I want to at least watch every film/TV episode in our library by New Year's Day 2011.
Now that we've gone Blu, I do have a resolution for 2010, and that's to trim the library of the fat. Those $4 and $5 pick-ups of the last few years? They're either going to be well liked, or they're getting traded to Half Price Books. It's harder to do things like this when you're married, because each person has to sign off on parting with something, while only one person has to sign off on keeping it. Still, I'm sure there are some things we can each agree we no longer need.
And the good stuff? Where possible, upgrade that to Blu-ray. There's really no reason to own a Blu-ray player if we're not going to watch our favorite movies in Hi-Def.

Re: 2010 DVD New Year's Resolutions
Work in progress but here are some and I will add as I figure them out:
1. Do not pay more than $10 for a movie on DVD or Blu-Ray
2. Do not pay more than $20 for a TV on DVD season
3. Start making a dent in my unwatched section

I resolve to keep doing what I've been doing. The only thing slowing me down is that it's getting harder to find the older titles because I already bought them.

Re: 2010 DVD New Year's Resolutions
1 - Stop buying movies the day of release unless under 17.00
2 - Don't buy TV shows the day they come out, wait till $20 and under
3 - Wait until I can get some sorta-wanted previously-viewed.
4 - Only buy titles I really want
5 - Sell off some of my collection on Ebay
6 - Watch the ones I own and haven't watched!
