Warner Bros. to release Clint Eastwood: 35 films, 35 years -- 2/16/10
Clint Eastwood fans just might feel the hyphenate has made their day when Warner Home Video announces Monday plans for an Eastwood DVD collection of virtually unprecedented scope.
Priced at $179.98, the 19-disc "Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years at Warner Bros." is set to hit shelves Feb. 16. The collection contains Eastwood films from 1968's "Where Eagles Dare" through last year's "Gran Torino," plus a feature documentary on the filmmaker by Time magazine critic and film historian Richard Schickel.
"I've known Clint for most of the time he's been at Warner Bros.," Schickel said. "I was fortunate to be able to wander around the Warner lot with him and hear his reminiscences. To be able to show him in the places where he works and lives and feels most comfortable is, I think, a unique opportunity."
The collection includes films in which Eastwood has acted, acted and directed, or helmed. Other materials in the box set include a biographical booklet.
Sounds like an interesting collection. I own a few of Clint's WB movies including the Dirty Harry Collection that was released a few years ago.

I love these big sets. I usually just wish list them and then wait for some great price drop down the road. As the studios usually start them at some crazy price to start with. They don't sell that great. And then they blow them out a couple years later.

Love sets like this, but I already own most of his films, so will only double-dip if there is a massive deal on it, and exclusives inside.

I already own most of his films also. I would bite on a few if and only if they're sold seperately.
That $179, no way.

I was excited until I saw 35 films on 19 discs. For $180, give us a decent presentation with all the extras from the two-disc editions and Dirty Harry Collection.

Does anyone know what the actual disc breakdown/features are? That's what I want to know before purchasing it. Since I only own two DVDs that would be identical in the box, it's a great value for me, but I'd still like to know before purchasing.

Sounds like a great set that I would normally be interested in. But I'm awaiting the inevitable cries due to the fact that all the discs have been tightly packed in cardboard or even worse, on top of either like a spindle within a box no larger than a toaster. If those don't come I may bite if cheap enough.

It's book type packaging with lots of pictures. 16 of the 19 discs included are dual-sided. Letters from Iwo Jima is included, but Flags of our Fathers isn't???
Are they deliberately trying to drive us crazy?

FYI, when I said "disc breakdown" I wanted to actually know which sides and whatnot and editions included. I'm assuming I'll probably have to wait for the release for that information.

Isn't this where they take those Clint Eastwood films that are in the Wal-Mart $5 bin. And put new packaging and slap a higher price tag on it.

For the record, $135/35 = $3.85 apiece. One of the 35 is a documentary disc unavailable separately, plus the packaging. If it was $200, it'd be a terrible deal, but at the prices you can find it right now (it's actually $111 or something like that in the Warner store), it really isn't bad, especially if you figure you'd pay $14.99 for Gran Torino.

Honestly, it just feels wrong to have a masterpiece like Unforgiven right beside crap like The Rookie and Space Cowboys

Eastwood just may be my all-time favorite actor.. but they're dual-sided AND in this book packaging? I dunno about that.

I've often wondered about Mega-sets like this. It's been my experience that anyone who would be interested in buying a set like this probably already owns a substantial number of the titles in the set (it's the same problem I've got with the Paul Newman set).
I wouldn't mind paying $110-150 for 35 films I hadn't seen, even if I was pretty sure going in that a couple of them would be clunkers. On the other hand, paying that money for a set you already have half or more of is silly. I might pay $10 for a Mill Creek megabox of public domain titles, but not $150 for this.
And I know I can sell off the individual titles in my existing inventory (which I've done when I've bought boxed sets before). But it's frankly not worth it for the $1-2 I'd get for most of these by selling them off.

Seeing as how most of these are double sided AND in the book packaging (that just screams bad idea), plus the fact that I already own the ones I'm interested in (just waiting to upgrade to Blu on some of those), I'll pass.
