Looking for a certain version of Dune
I may not be completely accurate on the details, but it's supposed to be a four-hour version, narrated by an uncredited Bill Phipps. Which version on DVD would that be?

I'm almost 100% that there is no four-hour version on DVD. When Dune was expanded for TV, it aired over a four-hour broadcast, originally at, I believe,i 188 minutes. The only expanded version is on the current region 1, DVD, which is 177 minutes.

I see. Does the 177 minute version have the narration? I've started a collection of Bill Phipps films on DVD, and I'm interested to have the one with his narration.

Does Bill Phipps sound like a crusty old short order cook that chases kids off his lawn? If so, that's him narrating the extended TV cut.

David Lynch shot far more film than eventually appeared in the 136 min (NTSC) "Theatrical version" (the first "rough cut" was approx. 4 hours - but it was shortened by Lynch and the studio). In 1988, the studio subsequently re-edited it as a TV mini series without Lynch´s approval, and thus his name was removed from the credits and replaced with the standard pseudonym "Alan Smithee" and "Judas Booth". This "TV-version" runs app. 176 min (NTSC). There are some other changes between the releases, and more info can be found Here (by Sean Murphy).

William Phipps' acting career spans seven decades. He has appeared in more than 80 motion pictures and near to 130 television shows. He has acted along side the greats: Marlon Brando, Anthony Quinn, Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Robert Mitchum and Charles Laughton.
His TV credits read like a primer on the Golden Age of television: "Gunsmoke," "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," "77 Sunset Strip," "The Wild, Wild West," "Batman," "The Virginian," "Rawhide," "The Munsters," "Wagon Train," "Perry Mason," "The Virginian," "The Twilight Zone"… you get the idea.
Phipps gave Prince Charming his voice and personality in Walt Disney's 1950 animated classic "Cinderella." He narrated the four-hour version of David Lynch's science-fiction epic "Dune."

Yeah, the four hour cut was a rough assembly with everything that was shot, including redundant angles and multiple takes.
