Warner no longer releasing Unrated DVDs...?
 

Was reading an article about some random upcoming Horror movie (The Hills run Red) and the Director said this, in regards to why he wasn't able to put his unrated cut on the DVD (the R version was actually shortened by 10 minutes due to ratings reason supposedly)

This would explain why they actually bothered to submit the Friday the 13th extended cut to the MPAA...I have no particular interest in this movie, but I wonder what their reasoning for doing away with Unrated DVDs is?

Given that it’s Warner Brothers, they’ll probably take them off the marketplace for a short while and then bring them back on only Blu-Ray editions of their movies as yet another 'exclusive' incentive for that wonderful technology…

Yay! Again Warner Brothers screwing the fans of their movies/shows over. There was a time I used to like Warner Brothers but over the years they have gotten waaaaaay too P.C. and and just stopped caring about the fans. I love DVDs (obviously) but part of me thinks the popularity of the format has given studios too much power over what they put on it. They can do whatever they want and they know it will still sell. And this goes for a lot of things. Not just the topic of this thread. But I guess that's just how it will always be. You audience's money first... your audience themselves... second.

I don't believe this is the case.

Warner is about to release the unrated directors cut of NATURAL BORN KILLERS, a title they had in the past licensed out to another studio.

If anything, they have gotten more liberal with their releases.

Most of the unrated stuff nowadays is just a marketing gimmick anyway. Let them submit older films that have reason to be released that way to be rerated (like F13) and keep the deleted scenes of new movies deleted as opposed to sloppily sticking them back into the movie and making them "UNRATED EXXXTREME" editions like everyone else does.

given how much attention the transfer for 'Cruising' was given, I'm surprised that it wasn't given a blu-ray release.... as for 'The Devils' - when pigs fly.

i think that's just what they told the director of a straight-to-dvd horror movie...maybe his unrated cut was just tooooo graphic.

Warner is even putting out the Harry Potter movies in extended form...which is the same thing as "unrated".

sort of, but not really. 'Unrated' in the days of VHS was always the indication that the restored footage was violence and/or sex that had been clipped at the bequest of the MPAA. Now a days if a studio wants to restore a movie of any footage, objectionable or not, they really don't have to resubmit and repay the Classification and Rating Administration to go through the whole process again.

what could i still add :)
typical corporation with a huge hierarchy where everbody is probably just
trying to protect their own ass and they are miles away of putting
their minds into what clients really want.
smaller labels are usually trying much much harder to meet the customer and fan wishes and are more flexible to meet those demands and wishes.
still i think warner has become the most arrogant from the big studios, because if they were the least bit interested in their customers, they wouldn`t just ignore any customer emails.
you can already tell that they fear customer contact more than the devil
the holy water, by the fact that they don`t even list any email addresses
on their site :)
what i simply don`t understand is the fact that the industry is constantly
crying about dropping dvd sales, but their releases are getting more and
more effortless, rather than trying even harder to put the best product possible out.

Nope. Warner submitted the Extended Harry Potter cuts to the MPAA, they are rated PG as well.

Look at the original quote...the guy says "from my understanding", therefore he is merely drawing his own conclusions based only on whatever information he has and his own situation....the upcoming NBK release obviously is evidence that this is not some actual "policy change", but probably something that is looked at on a case by case basis....

Not quite. Unrated means exactly that. It hasn't been rated by the MPAA.

If they were to submit an extended cut or "Director's Cut" to the MPAA, it wouldn't be unrated, which is what they did for the Harry Potter extended cuts.

yeah..ok. so using Harry Potter as an example wasn't a good idea. I know what "unrated" means. I just didn't know that Warner submitted the extended cuts to the MPAA.

I still don't buy it.

Unrated cuts sell so much better than theatrical. Now everyone expects them to be released.

Great... First they start screwing us DVD purchasers with single disc theatrical releases with sub par features while the Blu owners get director cuts and all special features that would fit on the dvd(i.e Terminator Salvation, Trick r' Treat). Now comes the end of unrated cuts!
Warner was almost consistently on the top of my list for dvd studios but I can see those days are over.

I think that they are only going to release "unrated" versions of movies on Blu-ray. It makes sense taking into account what they are doing now.

I'm sure you are right. They sure are desperate to push people to the new players, aren't they?

I think unrated was a gimmick in itself - what they meant was generally that cut scenes were back in, but what they implied was that they were sexy or gory, which was not always the case.

If they would end the practice of selling a DVD release as the complete movie, and often cutting stuff just for that purpose, then this would be a non-issue. Remember the Friday 13th director saying that whole new storylines would be incorporated, and that essentially two different movies were being released to DVD?

When I buy an older movie on DVD - just bought Orient Express, for example - I don't worry about what is missing, altered etc. It would be nice to go back to that for new releases.

so wait, the Terminator Salvation DVD will only be the Theatrical and bare bones, while the blu is the R rated DC? Fucking bull shit if true

that wouldn't surprise me, since the swing towards making stuff exclusive to blu-ray is becoming more common place. If I'm correct Paramount did this with 'Dance Flick' with the unrated cut exclusive to the bluray edition.

Do you mean extras or basic movies? I'm annoyed at the extras being left off of DVD releases, but haven't noticed any delayed or skipped DVD releases yet - did I miss some?

basic movies - it's rare but unrated/extended cuts exclusive to the hidef release IS becoming a reality. I can only think of three:
- Dance Flix
- In the Name of the King
- Heat

I don't want to see yet another thread turn into a BD vs. DVD bitchfest, but it has to be pointed out (whenever it is brought up as people incorrectly think it is SO one-sided) that for every "unrated/extended/director's cut" version that is exclusive to BD, there is at least one other title that BD did not get and remains exclusive to DVD:

Does he? I like Mann but I'm not a follower on what he does or anything. Hrm. I like Heat as it is with it's running time and it's editing. I'm totally in for a HD version of it though. Though...I may be out if he some misses with it. There's a rumored 188 min of Heat, is that true? Never heard of it till today.
