I guess we'll see on Thursday, when the full details for The Hangover are released...however I doubt your conjecture is correct, as a VERY credible source has already stated here for it:

I'm sure you are right. They sure are desperate to push people to the new players, aren't they?

I think unrated was a gimmick in itself - what they meant was generally that cut scenes were back in, but what they implied was that they were sexy or gory, which was not always the case.

If they would end the practice of selling a DVD release as the complete movie, and often cutting stuff just for that purpose, then this would be a non-issue. Remember the Friday 13th director saying that whole new storylines would be incorporated, and that essentially two different movies were being released to DVD?

When I buy an older movie on DVD - just bought Orient Express, for example - I don't worry about what is missing, altered etc. It would be nice to go back to that for new releases.

that wouldn't surprise me, since the swing towards making stuff exclusive to blu-ray is becoming more common place. If I'm correct Paramount did this with 'Dance Flick' with the unrated cut exclusive to the bluray edition.

Do you mean extras or basic movies? I'm annoyed at the extras being left off of DVD releases, but haven't noticed any delayed or skipped DVD releases yet - did I miss some?

basic movies - it's rare but unrated/extended cuts exclusive to the hidef release IS becoming a reality. I can only think of three:
- Dance Flix
- In the Name of the King
- Heat

I don't want to see yet another thread turn into a BD vs. DVD bitchfest, but it has to be pointed out (whenever it is brought up as people incorrectly think it is SO one-sided) that for every "unrated/extended/director's cut" version that is exclusive to BD, there is at least one other title that BD did not get and remains exclusive to DVD:

Does he? I like Mann but I'm not a follower on what he does or anything. Hrm. I like Heat as it is with it's running time and it's editing. I'm totally in for a HD version of it though. Though...I may be out if he some misses with it. There's a rumored 188 min of Heat, is that true? Never heard of it till today.

maybe those '11 additional scenes' noted on the back of the bluray amount to 18 minutes of footage.

maybe...dunno if I'd want an even longer version of Heat. Anybody know of Heat's history in the post production phase? I assumed that the current Heat, which was also the theatrical cut, was the definitive cut of Mann's? Did he ever test a longer cut of Heat? etc etc.

In Heat, Pacino was supposed to be a cocaine user, hence his rants from time to time. Maybe Mann is putting those back in?

Just from checking out what my Heat 2 disc DVD says on the back..it also says 11 additional scenes ie deleted/extended scenes. So....I'd still like to know wtf he's litereally doing to the film.

Warner still seems to be on the kick of not releasing any unrated versions on BD.

That's not true, they just don't advertise it anymore on the packaging.

WB recently released the unrated director's cut of The Cell on Blu-ray.
