What Do You Consider a Fair Price For DVD?

Re: What Do You Consider a Fair Price For DVD?
For you guys that say $5 per DVD, do you collect indie/cult/foreign films?
For mass produced Fox/Universal/WB etc. generic stuff with no extras I wouldn't expect to pay more than $5. If the majors go above and beyond with a loaded release then I'd probably go $8-10 or just Netflix it. Now a days when I see titles like the 1 disc version of Tropic of Thunder selling for $23.99 at Best Buy I just laugh.
But for the smaller Kino (alright maybe not them)/AnimEigo/Mondo Macabro etc. that depend completely rely on sales of one release to finance their next release I have no problem spending upwards of $15-20 for those as I would just assume these guys hang around longer ...especially considering the current tough market conditions.
Maybe I'm brainwashed to think upwards of $20 a sufficient price point for certain titles only, but until the licensing fees of films drop the smaller distributors are screwed at lower retail points.

Movies: Under $10.00 (I usually wait till they are under $5.00)
TV Series: Under $25.00 (I usually wait till their under $10.00)
I allow myself one $plurge each year. This year it was the $ky King Box Set.

For mass produced Fox/Universal/WB etc. I think a fair price would be $7.99 to $8.99 for indie and foreign around $12.99.
Same with CDs I think $7.99 is fair I very rarely spend 15.99 and up for CDs and DVDs anymore.

1 - Gotta really want it for our collection. {Except when they are really inexpensive and would be a "nice to have".}
2 - No more than .... DVD $10. Blu $15. TV DVD $20. TV Blu $25.
3 - Don't really have a max on collections but it basically follows the above criteria on a per title/season/etc breakdown.
I think the recent Big Lots, Kroger/Ralphs, Rite Aid, etc has ruined me for paying much for Discs...
Did splurge on one TV series during the DeepDiscount sale....

This is a good point, and one i didn't consider. For all the time i spend bitching about nonsensical Matthew McConaughey movies, i don't really explore less known genres than the ones i am familiar with. When i do so, perhaps i need to keep in mind that they are relying on dvd sales to keep their productions financed and going, and i will adjust my spending accordingly. for their work.

Re: What Do You Consider a Fair Price For DVD?
I'm leaving out downloads and people burning their own CD's. If done legally, the pricing factor is relatively the same as for buying a CD. If done illegally, you can always buy stolen merchandise for less money than legal stuff.
However, most people only watch a movie once or twice, which is why movie rental services are a viable business. Unless buying a DVD offers substantially more value than renting one, it is hard to justify spending much more to buy a DVD than to rent one. The only people who can justify a higher price point for their DVDs are those who sell collectible DVDs that their customers will watch multiple times (kid stuff, especially Disney, or a few cult or classic movies).
Why spend $15-20 to buy 17 Again, when you can rent it (there may be some wait involved) for $5 or less if you have no intention of seeing it more than once. Even if you have to wait a week or two, you are watching other stuff in the interim and it's not going to be gone the way a movie in theaters might be after a couple of weeks.
Ironically, the only films that could conceivably justify a higher price point are rare, catalogue titles, which few people want and Blockbuster won't carry. That's why Warner Archives is viable for now. However, as long as Netflix is out there, and carrying almost everything that gets released, renting through Netflix is a viable option for a catalogue title (there's rarely much wait on one of them).
