yeah me too. I think when I get my own apartment I'll hide the rare/OOP DVD's someplace seperate from the others..maybe a laundry hamper or ...just someplace you woulden't think someone would look.

thank gosh you got a lot of it back though. very lucky!

hmmmm...hey what about putting dvd's in a storage facility? do ppl steal from those? that's not a question exclusively to the member's post I've quoted - I'm just asking all in general.

Re: Stolen DVDs

isn`t the whole purpose of a dvd collection to watch the movies when you want!? if they are put away in a storage facility it pretty much destroys the whole idea of collecting in the first place
unless for the people who really just collect the dvds and don`t actually watch the movies

I discovered that my copy of Se7en was missing a long time ago. Don't know what the hell happened to it. Eventually I bought another copy for cheap.

Re: Stolen DVDs

When I first met my wife, she really didn't care about collecting films and didn't own many of her own. To her, movies were just something to pass the time on boring days and she treated them as such. They were scratched and worn to almost unworkable condition. In contrast, I treated them like treasures and kept them well cared for and was an avid collector, including rare imports and hard to find films, as well as a lot of criterion.

After three years of being with me the habit had kicked in for her too, and she came to prize the collection of 1500 films (including tv shows and box sets) I had acquired over the years. Fast forward a years and she cheats on me with some douche bag, then goes in for the divorce. After everything was said and done she stole 65% of my collection.

Of course I use "stole" loosely, but I think this counts. Nothing worse than being weaseled out of your hard earned collection, even if done in within the limits set by the law.

Re: Stolen DVDs

Just make sure you have clear emails sent back and forth where they admit to stealing them (or letting a friend take them) and call the police. With that police report you can threaten law suits... usually the threat of doing so will get them to FedEx them back to you. Heck, they crossed state lines its a federal crime now.

Just be sure you spell out each DVD name taken... heck, link Amazon web-links to everything. Then, after you get that you can send a follow-up email stating the value of the movies which can raise the larceny charge.

I had someone steal a bunch of CDs from me once in a CD wallet. I used the empty cases I stored away to bring the total over $300. After a deputy explained reading our emails back and forth and bringing up the misdemeanor charge they gladly returned everything. Technically it would have probably only gone to a civil court... but still, the douche didn't know that.

Re: Stolen DVDs

My friend lived in a condo and he was always traveling and he also had a house up in NH (which was his primary residence). He hired a cleaning woman for his condo, well when he sold the condo and moved the CDs to his house in NH he found that all the discs were missing!
Damn cleaning woman cleaned him out!

seems like a fair sacrifice in order to get rid of that woman
but jokes aside, california marriage law seems to suck a bit; she cheats
on you and still gets half??

I've heard that type of story before. I think if I were in a situation where I had to hire a cleaning lady, I'd make sure she had a long resume of good ratings. I don't trust anyone.

I've heard stories of that before = cleaning ladies stealing things from people.

A cleaning lady is simply someone that you let into your house, oftentimes when you arent there, to clean.
It takes alot of trust for me to let someone into my place, with me not there.

Interesting. I know it varies state by state but in Massachusetts every time someone sells used media discs the store is required by law to record valid (driver) license info and log the merchandise. Too bad every state did not require this ..as I'm sure your thief very well could have been arrested by the time you even showed up at the record store.

At 65%, I'd say it's a bit more than half... at least in his case. And it isn't just California... any state with community property laws will usually rake one spouse (typically the husband) over the coals.

Even in states without community property laws, a judge's decision can "legally" snatch a fair (or unfair) portion of one party's personal assets and give them to another.

Of course... there are ways to do "end runs" (as it were) around such "problems."

If one has a mind to do so.

of course. as i am from europe, the partner who was cheated on
is usually in a better position in front of the judge.
no wonder there are so many prenubs in the states
it`s a gold diggers paradise

Re: Stolen DVDs

Arrived home one morning from a late night out and discovered that the front door to my apt. was open. Quickly realized that thieves had entered through a poorly secured rear window. Their haul: my PS2 and about 10 games; a digital camera; Christmas candy; a Reebok bag (which they used to haul their loot); and FOUR DVDs -- Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, Kill Bill, and Pulp Fiction.

Seriously, they left behind about 200 other DVDs, many of which were still unopened, and only took those four Tarantino films. Despite how pissed off I was, I had to laugh at that.

at least they had a good film taste
but the irony seems to be that crooks enjoy films about crooks

I'm kind of appalled that they stole your Christmas candy. It's not every day of the year that can be replaced!

Re: Stolen DVDs

While in college, my friend and four of his roommates decided to travel down to Florida for the Orange Bowl. This left his one estranged roommate and another one that worked at Best Buy with me.

These guys never locked their house up which of course is really stupid in a college town. One night I was hanging out with my coworker at their house He got tired and went to bed so I decided to surf the net a bit before I went home. So its about 2AM when I leave.

We had been talking about pranking our friend in some way. We thought about buying a bunch of cheap porn and taping it all over his room (turns out porn is expensive!!). So the next morning we were going to grab something to eat and I got on his computer. I turn to Patrick and say, "Did you go hide all of Ty's DVDs?"

He just looked at me very confused. I said that his DVDs were not where they normally are. He then, trying to reason this in his mind said that he might have moved them. I was extremely confused too so I had to reason through this and see if I could remember actually seeing them before he left.

Everything else in his room was in place. Guitar, DVD player, TV, amp, CDs, books, etc. So after several minutes of trying to figure out what happened we finally realize somebody walked in and took all of them.

The next morning we also realize his laundry basket was missing (for transport of the loot) and after he returned we also found out the guy stole his check book and wrote two relatively cheap checks.

The police didn't do shit. They caught the guy on surveillance camera and that was the last we heard of it. My buddy was refusing to push the issue with the police. I was fucking furious but the issue died.

The end.

But imagine the creepy feeling of me being all alone in this somewhat big house, surfing the internet, while the guy was probably waiting for me to leave.

Ick.
