Don't buy them, but I see people's logic in buying movies that will probably not see the light of day on DVD. I have not sold any of my older tapes though. I own about 75-100 with most of those being Disney movies and sports releases
You are correct, although the upcoming special edition of Lost Season 5 includes what looks like a VHS tape from the picture. No word on whether or not this is a working VHS tape or if it's just a casing for a DVD inside or something.

I seem to recall reading that "A History of Violence" was the last major studio feature to be released on VHS, around Feb 2006.

I still put TCM rarities that you can't find anywhere else on VHS because I still don't have a DVR yet.

I don't buy them anymore but I never really had a huge collection to begin with. I probably only had around 20 or so and a bunch that were recorded off of television. The ones I still have are mostly just because of sentimental reasons I guess. I can actually probably name most of what I have on VHS to be honest- Back to the Future trilogy, the first 4 Batman movies, a couple Star Trek movies and episodes of the TOS and TNG, some old WWF ppvs, and a few others or so. Not a lot more than those I don't believe.

Do they still make VHS (either the actual movies or the players)

Movies no, the last was "A History of Violence" in 2006. Players yes, DVD/VHS combos come as players, and recorders as many people like to transfer old tapes to disc so there watchable on there DVD Players and/or PC drives. The odd standalone player is still available in stores and get this, rumor has it that VHS/Blu-ray combos are coming soon. So as you can see, VHS is in a way still very much alive..

I see it available for sale on Amazon.co.jp also.

Has to be something REALLY special or rare for me to bother with VHS. If something I want hasn't been put out on DVD yet, I can usually find it on laserdisc, which STILL looks great.

I didn't really start collecting movies until DVD came out. I have maybe 100 pre-recorded VHS tapes, all in storage, and maybe another 100 tapes of stuff I recorded off cable, mainly MST3K the first few seasons.
I keep meaning to dig them up and transfer them to DVD someday, but I doubt I'll ever get around to it.

I wish I had kept my old Disney animated movies on VHS because I don't particularly care for the recoloured versions they released on DVD.

Yea, I really should have made the thread title "Do you still collect VHS/laserdisk? Or is it DVD/Blu-ray or nothing? Maybe I'll go back and change it. LOL!

My family stopped buying VHS in 2001. I graduated from high school two years later and moved out a year later. I stopped buying VHS when they stopped. My parents still have their VHS collection. My two nephews watch some of the kid movies sometimes.

DVD/Blu-Ray only now.
I still bought VHS (mostly horror that wasn't out on DVD) until around 2000.

Many years ago I sold most of my pre-recorded VHS tapes to Blockbuster for store credit. However I still own plenty of movies, TV shows and sporting broadcasts recorded onto blank tapes and occasionally watch them every now and then on my Samsung VHS/DVD Combo unit.. The last tittle I purchased on VHS was King Kong vs. Godzilla just last week, as the DVD is extremely tough to find and when found often costs around the $40 mark so I settled for option B.
Last one before that was The Amityville Horror (2005), in about 2006..

Wow, lucky you. Because I live down under all the deals on that King Kong double pack on amazon and on eBay often cost $40 or so, not including shipping costs. So I guess I was lucky to find a VHS only going for $10, but seeing you picked up 2 movies on DVD for $4 less makes the deal I found pretty dull lol..

I still collect VHS, DVD, and Blu ray. irronicly the one im slowing down on is bluray, just not that many titles worth paying that much for. I have about 400 VHS's still and every now and again ill go to half price books and pick up a few more for like 50 cents to a dallor a piece. I heart VHS for life. still my favorite format.

Maybe the 35th Anniversary of King Kong vs Godzilla is the one that's worth something? But even that doesn't seem to be so true- I see it going for under $20 a few times.
back to the topic- yeah I've got several hundred still, mostly rarities that will never be on dvd.

Re: Do you still collect VHS? Or is it DVD/Blu-ray or nothing?
To answer the thread topic question:
No, I no longer collect VHS. My last pre-recorded VHS purchase was "The Indiana Jones Trilogy" which was released to VHS Widescreen in 1999. I already owned a DVD player then, but I figured it would be awhile before Indy showed up on DVD, and the Trilogy was reasonably priced at $24.95. As it turned out, "Raiders" was chewed up by a defective VHS player in 2001 -- still two full years before the DVD release. I was so mad I yanked the player out of the rack (with the "Raiders" tape still in it) and threw it in the trashcan!! I haven't touched the format since.
While at one time I had a fairly nice collection of Disney Animateds and Sci-Fi/Horror movies on VHS, I never really felt as though I *owned* those movies. With the VHS format most of the movies were released P&Sed; and, of course, the more you played the movie the more the tape would self-destruct. The format just didn't lend itself well to building a collection.
All that changed with DVD. Even today, every time I purchase a Widescreen DVD of a movie I really feel as though I *own* the movie. Yes: There can be digital artifacts (EE is the most troublesome); but the movie can almost always be enjoyed in its OAR and without fear of repeated viewings destroying the medium the movie is distributed on. It remains a great format for collectors even today. And, just for the record, I consider Blu-ray to just be an enhanced DVD format that takes advantage of more modern codecs (thus reducing digital artifacts) with better resolution. To me, a Blu-ray purchase of a movie I already own on DVD is just the same as purchasing a Special Edition DVD of a previously purchased movie. And since every Blu-ray player can also play DVDs, the format will remain completely viable for years to come.

I still buy Wrestling VHS tapes all the time on eBay and on Amazon. The last new VHS I bought was Star Wars Episode III, back in 2005. I should have bought it on DVD really, but the video tape was cheaper
