Why do some DVD's never seem to drop in price?
 

Does anyone else find it odd that some releases, some after more than a decade of being on the shelf remain at their original release price point? Some examples like Dear Frankie, The Opposite of Sex, Welcome to the Dollhouse come to mind. Yes, I'm aware you can purchase them secondhand at better prices, but seriously, a DVD that is over five or six years old, priced at $20+??? Whos do these companies think they are fooling?:confused:

Any thoughts or other titles that you've noticed the same thing would be welcomed.

I'm wanting to pick up the Pirates of the Caribbean movies on DVD and I'm surprised that most places still have these priced around $15 apiece. I know that Best Buy has them "on sale" right now for $11 apiece, but these films are all several years old and by now I was hoping to be able to get them new for around $7 each. Guess I'll just have to keep waiting...

My local pawn shop has 3 for 10 on all DVD's. and everytime I go I see at least one copy of each Pirates film. If you dont mind used, try pawn shops

For the titles mentioned by the op, I would imagine that those are all titles that move few units. So they would probably cost the retailers more, as they buy less of them, if that is how it works.

People Vs Larry Flint was like this for the longest time. And just all together hard to find in stores. Then then in the last year I started to see the 1997 release more and dropped to $10. However I ended up getting the Special Edition for only $5.00 off some guying selling his collection at work back in January. So I'm glad I held off all these years.

The ones I always want to get a deal on but can't seem to find even the most minimal of sales for are:

the Futurama movies
Squidbillies and The Venture Bros.
Hayao Miyazaki movies
American Movie
and of course the majority of Criterions

If you're near a Borders bookstore, you'd do well to get on their mailing list. They've been sending out mad coupons these past few months, trying to drive sales. There's one in my mailbox right now that's 40% off any one item in the store, and most Borders have DVDs. Their regular prices are pretty awful, but once you start applying those coupons it gets pretty good. We just picked up some Sealab and Venture Bros. the other day with coupons.

What's more annoying is wamting to buy a new release that's non-mainstream (you won't find it in the store flyers) and you always find the stores charge MRSP or close to it.

Yeah, I certainly have no idea how they decide which titles will get price drops and which ones won't. I will say just about every title that is that old has at least dropped five dollars in MSRP, mainstream release, indie, or niche. All the more puzzling that select titles stay at that high a price point. I think we all have been willing to buy titles on a lark when they get down to the ten dollar mark. Twenty bones, that's a lot of money and new releases have problems moving a whole lot of copies at that price. Older releases have virtually no chance selling at $20.

I had the same problem, luckily Canadian Wal-Marts have them on sale right now 2/$15 so I was able to get the entire collection for $21.50. It's not cheap but it's about as cheap as I have seen them new.

Keep looking as I'm sure a place will have them on sale sometime.

I know they still sell very well but Pixar movies never go on sale, I would own the entire collection if I could get them for around $7-10 each but right now I only own a couple because of their high prices.

A lot of the BBC titles rarely go on sale either. Old Dr. Who DVDs still command a high dollar value, for example.

Cross of Iron is one of those movies that never seem to get below 20 dollars even though it has been out for years,another one is aloha bobby and rose

That zombie flick Fido is another that I routinely see for over $20, although I'm sure I could get a used copy for much less. The first title I thought of, though, was Welcome to the Dollhouse since I always saw it for over $20 everywhere. Great flick.

I think there is more to it than that. They used to use that excuse to price HBO season sets so high, but now you can find new seasons like Big Love and True Blood for under $30.00 brand new relatively easy.

I think there is also a "perceived quality" aspect of it. Which, IMHO, is just an arbitrary excuse to charge more for DVDs. Such as when HBO first started to release TV shows on DVD and charged quite a bit for them. It wasn't a supply and demand issue then. You could walk into any store and easily find Sopranos and Oz season sets.

I bought this when it just came out and paid around $20 for it. oh well.

Hellraiser: Hellworld has been $20ish since if came out. Not so great movie, but the only dvd in the series that I (still) do not have.

Many (not all, but many) were recently on sale at Target for $12.99 and included $7.50 movie cash for Up. I pulled the trigger on Cars and Ratatouille becuase I had been waiting for a good price point.

These are mostly art/indie films that are available through second tier distributors. You won't find them in the big B&M stores like Walmart or Best Buy and you usually won't find them at Blockbuster. They sell mostly at upper end places like Borders and Barnes and Noble or the online retailers. The distributors probably figure that cutting prices won't markedly improve sales. If they are retailing for $20 and you cut it to $10, you'd have to sell twice as many just to have the same profit as before. They obviously don't think that's going to happen.

Your best bet on these are things like coupon sales at the bookstores or across the board sales at online retailers. These don't tend to turn up at pawn shops or used video stores either.

It's weird to see people wanting to buy the Pixar titles. You mean there are people that didn't just buy each one when it was new? :)

I found Hellworld and Deader used but in great shape at gamestop a while back in a buy 1 get one promotion, paid $6 total for both to round out the Hellraiser series

You just proved my point. Demand for those sets decreased, so they decreased the price in order to move units.

Still supply & demand. It's not immediate. HBO sees that their sets are not selling as well with the seasons sets priced so high, so they decreased the price. Simple economics.

Other than the obvious answer of parents whose oldest children have just now become old enough to watch and appreciate a movie that contains an actual plot (i.e. not children's programming DVDs), it's hard to say.
