Re: Criterion Newsletter - June 2009

I'd really like to see Criterion bring "The Motorcycle Diaries" to me in a fantastic edition! I feel like Gael García Bernal gives an amazing performance in that film.

Re: Criterion Newsletter - June 2009

Is el Che.

I know many of you don't know Spanish, but yes, it confirms that El Che is coming from Criterion.

Just wanted to share this interview I did to Soderbergh regarding "Che". It's in spanish (sorry!) but the video after the third paragraph has him talking in English (please, excuse MY English). Hope you enjoy it.

One tidbit that didn't make the video, the DVD release of "Che" is going to be handled by the Criterion Collection and he told me they have TONS of extra material for it.

He told me they would first release it in a rental movie-only version at Blockbuster, and then at the end of the year the Criterion Edition would come out. He said they had a bunch of research material, interviews, documentary footage, declassified documents and a "mountain" of scenes that didn't make the final cut.
Commence drooling.

Interesting. That's 2 first-run titles that Criterion's releasing this year (first Benjamin Button, and now Che).

Re: Criterion Newsletter - June 2009

I assume Blu-ray is a given, which is nice since IFC didn't apparently plan of doing it themselves, although to me, this is kind of an unnecesary release. Hopefully they're brining some unavailable Soderbergh (Gray's Anatomy? Kafka?!) along at the same time to make it worthwhile.

How do you know the Criterion of Benjamin Button isn't selling? From all accounts, it has done very well.

I would assume it is selling quite well given how cheap they lowered the price. Cheap price + Popular film (and very recent) + Awards + Brad Pitt = $$$ for Criterion. I own it.

Re: Criterion Newsletter - June 2009

Guess I'll be the downer. I wish Criterion would stop wasting their time with movies that will get fine dvd releases elsewhere and start releasing stuff that is unavailable or at an extremely low quality level.

Re: Criterion Newsletter - June 2009

Do you think anyone else could the job that they did on the dvd any better? I don't think Paramount/WB would be that kind to the film. Yeah, there'd be some stuff but nothing like what Criterion does for it.
