ZULU (Michael Caine) dvd question............
Hello Friends!!
I just purchased ZULU with Michael Caine on dvd through Amazon (MGM version). However, it appears that this is a repackaged version as the artwork is different from the one listed on Amazon's site. The one listed on Amazon's site is anamorphic. This version I got doesn't indicate if it's anamorphic or not on the back cover. How will I know?

Curious about the artwork. Pic?
As for it being anamorphic, I can't really say for sure. But I suspect that MGM just repackaged the DVD. That's the only change made.

Zulu is in the public domain. The MGM release used the original pre-print film elements for its DVD release (which IS anamorphic) and both the picture and sound quality are excellent (I can vouch for this having seen it). Other distributors had to use secondary materials and the quality of those releases varies widely (some of the releases have been edited down to two hours, so nearly twenty minutes of footage is missing is well). Some of them are widescreen, some aren't, and they may or may not be anamorphic. Essentially, you are taking your chances with any of the non-MGM versions. Since it's easy to get the MGM version at a street price under $10, there's no reason to go with any of the public domain distributors.

Wow...those BluRay screen grabs look incredible. As for the MGM R1 release, it is a well-worth purchase for the price. However, it is annoying that the original stereo tracks were not imported onto the DVD. The MGM laserdisc was in stereo, and sounded twice as good.

The ZULU Blu-ray disc is one of the most amazing examples of HD picture quality I have seen....and its region free too so get it if you can. Amazon UK has been as easy and inexpensive when it comes to shipping as any stateside source. Great disc.
