Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Looks like Collectorz is having a "rebate" which is $10 off... Still not sure when I am going to pull the trigger and change from a text list... But it is getting tempting....

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
I swear by Profiler. It hasn't shut down on me since I started using it years ago.

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
No system for me. TV shows alphabetical on one shelf; Movies alphabetical on another couple of shelves. I cataloged CDs years ago on index cards. A total pain and it ended up being useless.

I prefer every film in its own slimcase, all arranged alphabetically.
But do I put BD and HD-DVD in with the DVDs? If not, some trilogies or sets are broken up in different areas. How do you deal with double/triple features with all the films on one disc or in one case? Alphabetical by first title? But then browsing the shelves for the later movies is difficult. Box sets are difficult. Some are in individual cases and the films can be separated and sorted alphabetically, but many aren't. I'm sure it's just part of my OCD/hoarding/collector behavior, but I'm continually changing the way I organize stuff on my shelves. There are just SO many different genres, formats, spelling rules, size restrictions, boxset problems, etc. The answer for someone with thousands of DVDs and no photographic memory is obviously a software solution of sorts. Back when I had everything in DVDspot, I'd look there first for a film. Then, if it wasn't found alphabetically, i knew to look for it in a boxset or double feature or HD area. I've decided I'm not patient enough to create my own database/spreadsheet with all the categories i like to track/sort; so I'm going to buy Profiler or use one of these other programs. I think in my perfect world every film I own would be in it's own slimcase, arranged alphabetically, using copies for all the boxset double feature films, meaning that they would be in two places each. |

Box sets are difficult. Some are in individual cases and the films can be separated and sorted alphabetically, but many aren't. Firstly, do I sort The Sopranos - The Complete Fifth Season before The Sopranos - The Complete Second Season because "Fifth" alphabetizes before "Second," or do I go with the chronological meaning of the subtitle? I elected to go with the latter, though the part of me that adheres to strict rules is bothered by this. Secondly, stand-up and music releases. Does Jerry Seinfeld: I'm Telling You for the Last Time: Live on Broadway go under J's or I's? I noticed recently that the Half Price Books I frequent actually alphabetizes such things by the performer's surname, so in their system it would go with the S's! It can become exasperating at times, and all I can say is that I genuinely appreciate that this online community exists where I can vent about such trivial issues as how to properly organize my video library and not be mocked for being the uber-geek that I am. |

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
I wrote my own. My primary motive was to get some practice coding, as I'm trying to learn Visual Basic.net. Also, I wanted a program that consisted of just MY movies. So yes, that means everytime I get a new DVD I have to enter all the info into it (I've only gotten about half of my DVDs in there so far). But hey, it's my own, and I like that.
http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/h...atabasepic.jpg It's got the option to display whichever details I want (Title, year, director, language, my rating, packaging type, MPAA rating, etc, etc), it's got the ability to filter out only DVDs I haven't watched, I can choose to view the database with or without the thumbnails, it's got a "wish list" function, it can add or edit records easily, and lots of other little things. And it's got a pretty nifty search function that allows me to search by any criteria I choose (that's what the "search by" drop down is), as well as an advanced search where I can combine criteria (Like, say, I wanted to find all the Dario Argento movies from the 1970s that I rated 85 or higher, I could do it here): http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/h...tabasepic2.jpg And it's got a stats page that summarizes my collection: http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/h...tabasepic3.jpg Just thought I'd share. |
Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
^ That looks pretty sharp, caiman!
In your stats, I appreciate the total runtime feature. I've wondered many times how many months/years viewing time I have at my disposal or how long it would take me to get through my unwatched pile if I didn't buy another DVD. |
Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Outstanding, caiman. I really like it.

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Recently downloaded the trial versions of both DVD Profiler and Collectorz Movie Collector. These seemed the best from a PC perspective (no I am not starting a Mac vs PC debate).... Of the programs listed in this Poll that are PC compatible, DVD Profiler is by far the best for my applications... but... I tried Movie Collector... It has the extra versitility I require (in addition it is for more than just DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray.. it is for all movie formats.. VHS, LaserDisc, etc).... and it allows for Text exports as well output to a Palm based (not starting Palm vs iPhone vs Blackberry debate either) output. Thank you to everyone in this post that helped lead to this decision. :)

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
I also use Collectorz.com movie collector. Its my favorite out of all that I tried.

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
all these set up are nice. but can they be viewed by others without having to send them a file? as in a web page or something? thats why i built my own website. so others can view my collection. my fiends/family use it all the time when buying me gifts to make sure i dont already have something. and my other collecting friends go to it to see what i've recently bought.

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Cataloging my library is something I'm geek enough to enjoy doing, and I just realized this is one of the best parts of "going Blu." Now that I already have a system in place for this stuff, I can keep much better records of my purchases than I did with DVD!

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
I just downloaded the program from Collectorz.com .. Pretty good and easy to use. I also have been using dvd aficionado for years.

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Hi All,
Just a quick question - while this post may have been inactive for a while, I wanted to see if anyone could provide me with some info. I have a pretty large collection - 1400 titles on dvd, about 500 video game titles, and maybe 600 cd's I would really like some form of software that could make use of ALL these forms of media but I'm not having much luck looking out on the web. Could anyone make any recommendations? I have most of this already contained in excel, so importing would be a great feature. Thanks! |
Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Anyone know of a cataloging app for Blackberrys?

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Unfortunately I've been trying to find something that combines them all into one database. Seems to be more difficult than I had hoped. Libra would've been awesome to use, but seems to have no support now and cannot reach out to any databases.
I do not mind working in excel, it would just be nice to have something that put all the info in for me directly as I am missing about 50% of it (run times, ratings, year released, etc...) as well as having nice little thumbnails of the covers or what not. |
Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
My understanding is that the current DVD Profiler beta supports other media types. The catch is that their online database won't, so while you can use the program to enter this stuff, you'll be entering it in all by hand. I don't have any firsthand experience with this as I'm not a fan of beta software.

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Anyone have a good iphone app that will work with Profiler? I've got something called "imovies collection" right now that seems to pull my collection from my online list on profilers website. Problem is, it doesnt really list as much info about each title as I would like, the main one being format. I see that Collectorz iphone app lists this, as well as a bunch of other info, and lets you do some cool sorting things. I dont really want to input all my titles into another program, though. And I cant seem to find anything that says collectorz will input whatever Profiler will put out. Anyone have any thoughts?
|
Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Not familiar with the iphone app, but the regular one lets you input from csv and other file formats. I can't imaging the iphone one doesn't also do that.

Re: DVD Cataloging - What Program Do You Use?
Ok, so I am taking the giant $30 leap and registering at DVD Profiler.
To all: If you have heard anything about Invelos going out of business or selling off to some huge conglomerate who will dissolve DVD Profiler, please let me know. To IB: If the much rumored DVD Talk Online DVD Catalog is getting close to fruition, please make us aware of it. Speak now or forever hold your peace. |

Nope. Still the "imovies Collection" which works, just isnt as featured as I want. Apparently the new version of Profiler has some features that specify "iPhone" so maybe an app from them is near.
