That's what I do. When I saw that DVD Spot was shutting down, I transferred all my titles to an Excel Spreadsheet and have since uploaded it to Google Docs. I am much more pleased with it than I thought I would be; it has proven a good replacement for DVD Spot. The one link I have has separate tabs for my DVDs, Blu-rays, and CDs. Very organized and easy to update, and I can access it anywhere and export the list to a computer with ease. Also very low probability that it will go anywhere, considering it is Google.

But on the off chance that Google ever did stop its Docs web hosting, I save it to my computer from time-to-time and have also backed my collection up on DVD Aficionado. I don't like it nearly as much as Google Docs or DVD Spot, but it is nice to have a second option. The main problem is that it doesn't have the store exclusive releases that I grew accustomed to on DVD Spot. And since I don't feel like figuring out how to submit new titles, I just leave them off.

For DVDs and Blu-rays, I include UPC, DVD Title, Release-Specific Details, Number of Discs, Region, Broadcast/Premiere Year, and DVD Release Year.

The only thing that bothers me is that for the CDs I have been able to keep track at the very bottom the total number of discs that I own. When I input the same formula for my DVDs and Blu-rays it doesn't work.

That looks great kstublen! Almost exactly what how I want mine to look. I probably won't track year released, and hope to add a "when watched" column, and a "in boxset?" column. I have hundreds of films in boxsets, and plan to buy more and more of them. Many are difficult or impossible to separate and file alphabetically, so knowing where to look for a title is important.

But it looks great, can I steal it?

Haha of course, feel free. I think I might borrow your "In a Boxset" idea. I wanted to do something like that, but wasn't quite sure how to indicate it. So obvious, and yet I completely missed it.

I don't update my dvds anymore, gave up after guzzlefish/dvdspot.

I still miss guzzlefish's stats.

I am still using Delicious Library 1. Tried 2 but hated that I couldn't resize the movies on a slider anymore (have they fixed that yet btw?)

Does DVDAf have any plans to offer a quick import method?

I know they did years ago but removed it. Thought they might after DVDSpot was abandoned as it would be extremely time consuming to enter titles one by one for anyone having to enter en masse.

Using DVD Profiler Premium version and want to export my collection as a CSV file. The latest versions of DVD Profiler only seem to have the capability to export as XML, and for some reason the file will not open in Excel correctly (MS-Excel 2003). Any ideas???

1. Open Excel
2. Open your .xml file. Choose "Use the XML Source task pane" when you open it.
3. From the source pane, drag the attributes that you want to show up into the spreadsheet. They will each show up as columns.
4. Once you have all the columns you want, right click->XML->Refresh XML Data
5. Sort, autofilter, etc... as you want.

The best part is that now this spreadsheet will always be linked to your XML file, so if you re-export, all you have to do is step 4 (refresh) and that's it! This is exactly why I can't imagine anyone actually manually keeping track of their DVDs in a spreadsheet when you can link everything from DVDProfiler as you see fit.

Last I heard they had no plans to add it any time soon, but it was on their radar or some nonsense.

Frankly that should have become a top priority when thousands of people were abandoned by DVDSpot. They had a prime opportunity to pick up lots of new users and lost it. I have no idea how they expect someone with a large collection to start using their site.

Cool, I'll have to try that.
There's also a free plug-in, "Export to CSV" that I have used. But I'll try the XML method, it might be faster.

Numes: Thank you very much - that worked out very slick. The only thing that I was doing wrong before was not refreshing the XML Data after I dragged the columns I wanted into the spreadsheet! Amazingly easy and nice - yeah - why have I been keeping a separate Excel spreadsheet when it's so simple to have it linked like that!!

Not to start a PC vs Mac war, but I sure do wish that Delicious Library was available for PC... The big reason is that it seems to have the same / similar interface and look of DVD Profiler and Collectorz programs... yet it does Books, CDs, and DVDs in one program for one price (don't have to have 3 programs and don't have to pay for 3 programs at full price) .... Still find it interesting that there are not any commercially available inventory programs like this in stores, online or brick and morter .....

Ok... no one has commented for a few days... While I like both DVDpedia and Delicious Library, I am a PC user..... Therefore I cannot use either of these programs.... So it is slowly coming down to DVD Profiler or Collectorz (if I switch from my textlist / spreadsheet method) ... I do like how Collectorz also can also export to a Palm PDA Format... and I am not that interested in posting my collection online.. I really want to have more than the textlist can provide... And I want to also catalog CDs.... decisions decisions.....

Does anyone have any comments, pros, cons, of these two methods (Profiler / Collectorz) ... Any suggestions... Are they worth the money to you? .....

alas, I might just stick with textlist... until a good program similar Delicious or Pedia is PC available.... but any input would be great... Thanks.

Nice site. I've thought about creating my own site for my collection but 1500+ titles is a lot to scan (or search the net for). What program do you use to maintain it? (Dreamweaver?, Notepad++?, Nvu?, FrontPage?)

Any advice you could offer would be appreciated! :)

I used Dreamwever. And as you can see I only have thumbnails up. There is really no need (at least not for me) to have large pictures. So 90% of the thumbnails I got off of DVDAF. The rest I had to look up or take pictures of myself. But that wasn't so hard. It only took me about a week to build. I just worked on it a bunch every night after work. I find the work of updating it and improve on it fun! And like I said, I like that I am in control. I make the rules. Some of the listing rules on DVDSpot & DVDAF always bothered me. But I no longest have to worry about that. And since I started collecting VHS again (for titles that are not on DVD as of yet) I can even put them up so everyone can truly see my entire collection. All in all I wont be going back to an online database again. I really like having my own site. I only pay $12.99 a month for hosting but I was paying that already for my photography website (that is why the url is (http://www.dkephotography.com/dkedvd.htm). So basically its not costing me anything. :)

I've got over 2700 DVD/BD discs. Once DVD Spot bit it, I was done. No way I'm re-entering all of that information again anywhere.

DVD Profiler is well worth the $20 I paid to register it. I dont have a smart phone, so I dont really care about portability like that. The most i need is to access my collection online, which I can do with profiler.

Here is my list of wants in a Cataloging Method.

* Online capablilites for information importing, but no need to post collection online.
* Good interface for entering and gathering data.
* PC Compatible.
* Same program look and feel for CDs (and maybe Books as well).
* Text output to put on a portable device. Doesn't need to be fancy just raw title text is sufficient. Like having it with me so I don't buy duplicates.
* Affordable... (that is why I liked DVDpedia and Delicious Library --- but Mac only :( )

DVD Profiler is less expensive ($29.99 for full) and has good reviews.
Collectorz also has CD and Book versions... and you can search their online database for movies only without purchasing software which helps to give an early look if stuff from your collection that is not mainstream is detailed.... BUT their software is much more expensive ($49.99 for full) and there is no bundle packages if you want to do CDs &/or Books (another $49.99 each).

Thanks. I've started writing the code for my own "film collection" site in Notepad, but I'm thinking about switching to M$ Expression Web or Dreamweaver because I think that would be faster. In the past, I've used FrontPage and it always added useless code to my source, but it appears that that's been "fixed" since with Expression Web. I'm not planning on using large images either, so I'm going to be downloading covers from DVDAF as well, which will be easy since I already have my collection set up there.

As for hosting, I'm unsure yet. Since the site will be purely HTML with a little javascript here and there, I won't need many resources, some free reliable host would most likely do for now. I've got a lot to do right now though, so I'll worry about that when I'm 100% done.

I'd like to use Profiler, but it's ridiculous that the only way to use it on a Mac is if I buy and run another OS.

I've used dvd profiler since version 1.0 -- verify all discs are entered once a year with the wife via a dvd audit. She also can comment on my inability to alphabetize....
