Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

I've heard good things about it over the years and I'd love to check it out, but Sony picked up the rights a few years ago and let it go out of print. It's available on iTunes, but I would much rather watch on DVD. What gives, Sony?

Sony will eventually release this on Blu-ray. What's taking so long, nobody seems to know. You can, however, just pick up the R2 DVD sets from Amazon UK pretty cheaply though.

I'm anxiously awaiting a re-release of this as well. The only show in my top 20 that I don't own. The question is, will it have special features when it makes the inevitable reappearance?

MORE special features than the Starburst editions?

I just rewatched my original releases last month and would be eager to pick up the bluray versions. Especially if they came in a little Moya

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

I was wondering this too. Last time that I checked, it was just season one that was OOP. Now, however, it appears to be everything except the Peacekeeper Wars! I heard that Sony apparently bought the rights from ADV. Now, I have to wonder, however, if it will show up again on SD with the many extras intact, and somehow doubt such.

What about an SD release?

Same as I wondered. Guess that we'll see, assuming that it ever comes out.

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

I thought Sony only acquired the rights to Season 1 and that was why there was a sort of limbo?

I already have the Starburst sets, so am unlikely to upgrade, but they could use it. There is no need for these seasons to be 12 discs each (even with the nice amount of extra's currently included).

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

I turned out that one of my discs would no longer play in a season 2 set. I got it for $18 on ebay and considered it a bargain. You would think they would print more of those, even if just to repackage them in a complete set for a triple dip for the fans.

Or maybe the fans got pissed over the $90 season sets with the crappy editions... then the starburst editions... then having to rebuy the starburst editions without the bad flipper press... then having to start buying SG1 because all the actors flocked to that show...

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

I still own a few of the early Starburst sets with DVD-18's. I haven't watched those yet, but was it actually a bad pressing or was it just that some people have problems playing DVD-18's in general? I've never had an issue with DVD-18's up to this point so I didn't worry about swapping those out.

Wow...on the used market those Starburst editions go for a premium. On a standard trade in place I use they can go for between $20 to $43 per each season collection (3 collections per season). I would imagine on an aution or in the markeyplace they would go for even more.

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

My all-time favorite TV series & my #1 most wanted Blu-Ray release. It annoys the hell out of me that this show is OOP right now, just b/c I would love to see more people get into it. Most, including myself when I first watched it, almost give up on the series in the beginning, but if you can make it all the way past the first season, you will be hooked.

I have the OOP Box sets of all 4 seasons that go for good money on ebay, I'm always so tempted to sell them, but there is no actually word, just fan speculation on if this show will actually be re-released, & the Blu-Ray rumors are just that, fan rumor, there has been nobody involved as far as I know that has ever mentioned anything about an actually release.

What trade in place is it?

Holy crap, a complete sealed set is up to $405 on Ebay.

While you can probably get more doing auctions and amazon marketplace, I just don't want to put in the effort. So when I have one's to sell I usually go through Newtownvideo.com. That is where I saw prices of $20 - $43 for selling individual Farscape collections.

While I wouldn't mind taking adavantage of these prices since I typically paid around $16 a collection, as already stated I wouldn't want to risk it never coming out of OOPs status. This is one I definitely want to watch again.

It also has what I would consider one of the best villians of all time.

Ok, thanks. I'm actually the opposite, I doubt very seriously I will ever watch this show again, so I may capitalize and trade it in before any new release gets announced.

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

Hm. Maybe Sony is waiting for some sort of opportunity to cash in? Of course, I'm not aware of any new Farscape content on the way or any projects from any of the creative parties involved, so maybe they're just planning on sitting on it. You know, maybe it's finally time to see if that region-hack that I tried on my new player works.....

Wasn't it supposed to be coming back in the form of webisodes or am I thinking of something else?

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

It's still in stock at rightstuf.com. I can't post URLs but each season is $112.49. Sesaon 1 quantity is limited to only 101 units remaining.

You can get also get 10% off all purchases if you join their Got Anime? Club for $12 and once you're a club member you can also get additional discount codes by visiting the gotanime.com website. Free shipping over $49.

Unfortunately, most of those are the older box sets that were much more expensive then the later Starburst release. A full season of a Starburst release typically cost about $50 instead of $112. Although they do appear to have a few of the 4th season Starburst editions left for anyone that is missing those.

Check half.com. I sold a SINGLE Starburst set (S2. v1 ?) for over $100 on half about a year back. Sold another single set for around $50. So selling a whole season for $40 is just flushing money down the toilet. Half.com takes zero effort.

Yep, though there hasn't been much news on that front in a while. Rockne is involved in the recent series of Farscape comics though, and they are pretty good and take off where PKW left off. (there is also a run focused on D'argo, during the series)

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

Such a great show! Can't understand why it's out of print! Why not make them available cheap and make money off it instead of just keeping it in limbo? Look how well Firefly has done on dvd as a cheap set.

I was lucky enough to buy all of the Starburst Sets with the corrected discs (NO DVD-18s). Got them all dirt cheap too. I had no idea that this series was out-of-print and that they are fetching outrageous prices in auctions. Wouldn't sell mine though... this is one of my favorite sci-fi shows and I'd definitely double-dip for blu's!!

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I already made my trade-in order for Newtown. They gave me $274 for the series, which is more than I paid for the discs new so that's good enough for me.

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

I could never complete my Starburst collection so I sold them thinking we'd soon get a complete series box or something...my mistake! I can't believe they are not pushing this great series more!

Re: Farscape: Why isn't it in print?

Man.. I'm really glad I picked mine up when I did. I held out on the Starburst sets for a while when it was reported about the dvd-18 issues. Once all four seasons were completed and corrected (dvd-9's) I bought all of them online. Paid around $150 total for all 4 seasons. Hate to think how much they would cost now!! I'm sure it will see an eventual re-release, as well as a HiDef release at some point (fingers crossed).
